Integrated Business Processes with ERP Systems ReviewThere are many elements of this book that make it unique from other business process books currently available. For someone wanting to learn business processes in the context of SAP ERP, I am aware of no finer book on this topic (including those produced by SAP Press). There are a few books on the market currently (including one by these same authors) that cover business processes on an introductory level. There certainly are many books that take a particular ERP functional area and focus on it in depth. This text presents a moderate dive into the mechanics of all of the core ERP processes. A focal element of the book is on the integration of those processes that can be achieved through the use of ERP. Each of the processes are covered in depth independently, and then those processes are examined in an integrated system.
This book has strong content similarities to the SAP TERP10 training class and related materials. While the TERP10 materials are over 1,000 pages, not always clear, missing strong review questions and support exercises, and available only to those taking the official SAP training course (at significant expense) this text condenses those materials into something more readily usable in an academic setting or for a professional. The content is supported by unified examples throughout the book based on the fictional company Global Bike (an added bonus to those who use this text in conjunction with SAP University Alliances resources). Even for one with TERP10 experience, this book holds great ongoing value as a reference tool.
While this book definitely has a university audience as its focus, I believe it to be a very valuable text for a new SAP ERP professional, someone seeking a career path in SAP ERP, or someone with expertise in a single process who would like to see how all the pieces fit together. The book walks the line between being too in depth to be readable and understandable, and too surface to be practically useful.
Having used the preliminary issue of this text in teaching a university class, I found the students to respond well to the material and to have understood it. Those same students going on job interviews or having discussions with professionals have grounding upon which to build further expertise (and often an understanding of the functional integration of ERP that is stronger than those with extensive experience). This distinguishes those students from those with only a generic understanding. The value of this book is that it provides a solid foundation across a wide range of ERP topics. This then prepares one to focus more on a single element of ERP in more depth in future studies while being able to keep everything in its proper context.
If you are a student planning a career in SAP ERP--particularly in development or a technical aspect of ERP--buy this book and study it to learn how all the pieces fit together. If you are an SAP professional or educator, there's great value here as well. I think you'll find it to be the type of book well worth reading for yourself (and frequently reviewing) and also one you'll frequently recommend to others as a part of their learning process or professional development.Integrated Business Processes with ERP Systems Overview
