Strips, Toons, and Bluesies: Essays in Comics and Culture ReviewNothing very inviting here except for the odd pic (Thun'da, King of the Congo, anyone?). If you prefer reading words like 'subtext' to actually reading a comic then this is for you (or maybe if you want to APPEAR to enjoy reading words like subtext - if you're really serious you'd be much better off with Douglas Wolk or any of the various volumes of essays now proliferating).
Much ingenuity evidently went into this book's cunningly inviting title and grossly misleading subtitle; in fact the text (halfhearted, derivative) is only there as padding for this tepid tie-in to yet another comics expo. About the only thing I gleaned was that the Tijuana Bibles included take-offs of Betty and Veronica and Little Orphan Annie(!). Not in the standard Simon & Schuster collection they don't. Were they too transgressive or simply too badly drawn? As for the 'academic' input - well, Todd Hignite's a geezer (as we say) but his note #8 on p59 is an absolute gas.Strips, Toons, and Bluesies: Essays in Comics and Culture Overview
