The Best of Windows 7: The Official Magazine: The Official Magazine: A Real-Life Guide to Windows and Your PC ReviewWritten by the British staff of the Official Windows Magazine (which comes out quarterly here stateside and is not a bad magazine, available at your local B&N and Borders bookstores), this beginner's guide to Win7 is rather poorly written. Some of the step-by-step instructions are missing a step or two, and the layout is hideous: each topic is spread over two facing pages, but often it's not obvious wether you should read across the top of the two pages first, or read one page before the other. I feel that even though the book underwent editing by an American English speaker, the writing is still very awkward to an American reader.
What I hate the most though, are those so-called super tips, which are nothing but some very basic things anyone under 50 can figure out on their own (no offense to anyone over 50 as I'm getting there prety soon).

Essential Windows Communication Foundation (WCF): For .NET Framework 3.5 ReviewI'm a big fan of the entire "Essential" series from Addison-Wesley and I expected a lot from this book. I could sum up my opinion on it by saying "It delivers".
My vantage point is a little different from most in that I was coauthor of a book on Winfx/Indigo and I teach WCF. The pool of books out there on WCF are all quite good when compared to other technologies. I think that's b/c in large part, enterprise technologies aren't usually used by beginners and there's been a general reluctance to embrace WCF from what I've seen. I suspect this is in large part b/c you have to relearn Remoting/WS/WSE/MSMQ/Enterprise Services. Once you dive into it though, you quickly realize that WCF is almost too good to be true.
This book does a few things very well. First off, it explains each of the concepts clearly. I find that the authors all write well and are very good at succinctly communicating whatever they are talking about without ever talking over your head. The level of detail is very good too. A few places they could have went deeper (for instance, I think MTOM should have gotten more than a brief descriptive few sentences) but on the whole, I think the covered topics in proportion with how much they are used in the marketplace. They use a good bit of both simple and more involved expamples so if this was your first WCF book, you'd be well served but if you've read several WCF books, you'd still be glad you bought the book. I've bought both the print version and the Kindle version (which I love) and don't believe I've come across any errors. As such, I'd have to say the editing is very good, although that's not surprising in the least from this series. Another nice feature of the book is that while it has three authors, the writing style if very similar. So you get the benefit of three different people's experience without having the problems related to three different writing styles.
I found this book to be very helpful overall and even though I was well versed in most of the stuff they cover, I still found it a great reference. I've purchased copies of it for everyone on my staff and that's perhaps the highest compliment I could pay it - in addition to buying both the hard cover and Kindle version. Professional Windows Live Programming (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewAs far as I'm aware this is the only book currently on the market that covers Windows Live Programming and therefore in quite unique in that aspect. I was actually quite surprised to hear of this book as I am a Windows Live Microsoft MVP and so it was with great enthusiasm that I delved into it and read it cover to cover.
The book is split into 11 chapters, apart from the first few which gives overviews of windows live, each chapter basically covers a single technology, ranging from better known technologies like Virtual Earth, messenger and Live ID to lesser known ones like Custom Domains and Live Expo.
With each chapter/technology, Jon gives a brief introduction to what it actually is then dives straight into the available SDK and shows you how you can use that particular technology for yourself and how to integrate it in with your own web applications. He doesn't cover every single API call available for each technology but does cover what will be the most widely used situations.
As mentioned Windows Live technologies are mainly web based and the available API's and there to be used within your own web sites. In order to use this book Jon has assumed that you already know technologies and languages such as Javascript, HTML, CSS etc. If you don't or if you're just getting started in web programming then this book isn't for you, yet.
Microsoft has made available a great number of technologies through Windows Live including authentication, mapping and search. Each of these potentially has it's place in your web site. There is a terms of use for each technology however unless you're a very heavy hitter, essentially all these technologies are free for you to include in your applications.
Overall this is a great book for an introduction to programming using the various Windows Live technologies and one that I thoroughly recommend picking up and reading. If this is the case then why did I score it higher? This book was published in 2007 and Microsoft have been very aggressive in their releases and updates to these technologies. Unfortunately this book, as every other computer book will eventually become, is now out of date. Some of the technologies that Jon covers like Windows Live Expo, Microsoft is no longer supporting. Other technologies like Virtual Earth have been updated with new API's and features and Microsoft have also released other technologies not covered in this book for example the Windows Live Web Messenger API. The question therefore isn't why didn't I rate this book higher, but why did I rate it as high as I did? This book gives you an excellent grounding in various Microsoft Windows Live technologies and the things you learn in this book can be applied to the latest releases. So I would recommend picking up this book, reading through it, then visiting http://dev.live.com to get the most up to date information regarding the API that you are interested in.
