Teach Yourself VISUALLY Windows XP ReviewThis book is unique because of it's "Visual" aspects. It is chocked full of illustrations. These illustrations are actually photos of exactly what you will see and what options you will have when you are configuring Windows XP. Often this photos take you step by step on how to do things. It does this for basic tasks and also for things like burning cd's. Even if you haven't had much expierence with Windows you will feel like a pro when you have finished this book.Teach Yourself VISUALLY Windows XP Overview

Windows XP : Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks ReviewI just received my copy of "Windows XP: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks" and I can honestly say that I have never learned so much, so fast. I've been using XP for about a year now, and consider myself comfortable with it. But I always felt there were some things that were right within my grasp to do, but I couldn't figure them out intiutively. Well, this book has them all. Want to organize your documents or photos better? Configure XP to work as you want it to? This book has it. It's organized in a logical manner, unlike Windows XP Hacks. Finally, I just love the "Visual" approach. It's much easier to see what I am doing, rather than reading about it. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get the most out of XP, fast and easy.Windows XP : Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks Overview

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 PC For Dummies ReviewThis book helped me decide whether I really needed a MCE computer (versus a normal XP). The key was on the first page of chapter 9, quote "the TV functionality that Media Center provides is its most compelling feature".
I tried in vain to figure out how would the integrated TV tuner (NTSC) work with our TV system (Pal N). In short, I got no answers either from the forums nor "the green button" fan's website. Conversors were expensive and nobody would guarantee they would work down here.
Conclusion: I bought a DVD recorder locally, and an XP computer that is still the standard OS most people have (unlike MCE, that barely exists here).
The book is extremely user friendly, very clear, but doesn't shy away from hard topics. Part IV specially is crammed with knowledge on networks. No wonder the authors made a separate book on the subject!
The comparison of wireless LAN systems on chapter 16 comes in handy.
The explanation of "sampling" on page 34 is, again, almost "too clear" :).
Finally I understood what 24 bit and 96kHz mean! And WHY bigger numbers are, in this case, better. The comparison with the CD's sampling rate is another example of their ability to teach.
In short, the hardware recommendations may be a bit dated, their enthusiasm over this OS may sound a bit over the top after Vista, but I think this was a honest effort to explain what this OS was all about at the time it was the newest kid on the block. This book is the closest thing to actually using this OS. For their detailed walkthroughs alone, it deserves its 5 stars.
PS: The appendix on how to connect your MCE PC to different home entertainment systems is comprehensive thanks to its drawings. And the index is clearly organized in big topics, which renders it useful.Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 PC For Dummies Overview

Windows XP in an Instant ReviewI started giving this book away as a gift over a year ago. However, I just recently sat down and took the time to read it cover to cover. This is a great book for 1.) new computer users, 2.) new Windows XP users, 3.) visual learners, and 4.) children. Windows XP In An Instant is an excellent introduction to XP (both versions). I found the book to be simple and concise and it includes voluminous screen shots of almost every topic covered. This is NOT a book for advanced users. The main thing you should know about this book is it clearly explains (with photos) the top 100 tasks you probably want to do with your XP computer. The material is well organized and easily accessible. A must have learning and reference tool for anyone new to XP.Windows XP in an Instant Overview
