After two essays that relate the history/observance of Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving food from the 17th to 21st Centuries, Hillstrom presents a collection of primary resources (declarations, magazine articles, speeches, hymns, poems, etc.) that describe the first Thanksgiving, early Thanksgiving Proclamations issued by U.S. Presidents, the growth of the Thanksgiving mythos, accounts of New England Thanksgivings, Thanksgiving and the Civil War/Lincoln's proclamation of a national holiday, Thanksgiving developments of the 20th Century (the Macy Parade, FDR's date-changing fiasco, football games, etc.), Thanksgiving in World Wars I and II, Native American perspectives on Thanksgiving and so on.
In short, THANKSGIVING, THE AMERICAN HOLIDAY is a useful guide charting how this particular holiday developed and evolved over the years and how Thanksgiving has impacted on generations of Americans. Neither exhaustive nor definitive, it is informative, insightful and tugs at the heart a bit. And it would be an excellent resource for report-writers. Recommended.
