Daisy Cooks: Latin Flavors That Will Rock Your World ReviewI do agree with some of the reviewers that Daisy can be somewhat perky and annoying in her television show - but every time I watched it, I found myself salivating over those dishes. I anxiously awaited this book, thinking about all the things I would make - especially the homemade sofrito as I was sick of buying the frozen stuff at my local bodega.
I was not disappointed! This book is gorgeous to look at - nice pictures of the food and Daisy's beautiful family. And the recipes are not hard at all. I have been cooking away like a fiend - recreating many of the recipes featured on her PBS show. No one here has been unhappy - or hungry since! The sofrito recipe makes all that frozen stuff appear flavorless! We especially enjoyed the Chicken Diablo recipe - really amazing! Daisy DOES rock!Daisy Cooks: Latin Flavors That Will Rock Your World Overview

Molto Gusto: Easy Italian Cooking ReviewI've had Molto Italiano for awhile now, and I can honestly say that I don't cook from it that often, because the recipes--while all amazing--just aren't as accessible in terms of ingredients. But Molto Gusto (with its truly beautiful photographs) really lives up to its subtitle and brings the recipes down to the bricks and mortar of Italian. The few pastas and antipasti that I've made from this already were fantastic. Highly recommended!Molto Gusto: Easy Italian Cooking Overview

Everyday Pasta ReviewGiada's third entry into the cookbook theater is as good as her first two, and there seems to be no end to her culinary offerings to us. This time, she immerses herself into the somewhat crazy world of pasta and the many "clothes" it wears. Delicious to say the least!
I have to admit that one of the first things that grabs my attention when looking at cookbooks is its presentation; does it make me want to look at because it invites me with with something comfortable and familiar? Or is it something that jazzes up that same familiar look? With it's sharp, fresh, and detailed photography and simple, yet inviting writing, Giada brings to you a compendium of sorts in her ode to pasta.
She begins her introduction with "The Origins of Pasta" then goes into her "Top 10 Pasta-Cooking Tips" which is followed by "Matching Pasta Shapes to Sauces" (I never really thought of how the shape of the pasta actually influences the flavor depending how it attaches to the shape). The book then breaks down into 3 sections: Pasta Go-Withs, Pasta for All Seasons, and Pasta Basics.(Pasta Go-Withs)

French Food at Home ReviewWhat a gift for those of us with neither the time nor the patience for classical French technique! From the "helpful hints" to the wry comments, this book makes French cooking a lot of fun, not just accessible. I have yet to make anything that disappointed even my finicky five-year old. And with the increasing emphasis on fresh, seasonal fare, this book has been a great source of ideas for things to do with (even more) tomatoes, corn, peaches, etc., etc. No matter your skills, or lack thereof, in the kitchen, you will find yourself reaching for this book again and again.French Food at Home Overview

Thanksgiving: The American Holiday ReviewLaurie Hillstrom's THANKSGIVING, THE AMERICAN HOLIDAY is the paperback edition of Hillstrom's 2007 THANKSGIVING BOOK published by Omnigraphics in 2007. Same content, better price: $65.00 vs. $24.95.
TTAH traces the history, customs and societal impact/meaning of this most American of holidays. After two essays that relate the history/observance of Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving food from the 17th to 21st Centuries, Hillstrom presents a collection of primary resources (declarations, magazine articles, speeches, hymns, poems, etc.) that describe the first Thanksgiving, early Thanksgiving Proclamations issued by U.S. Presidents, the growth of the Thanksgiving mythos, accounts of New England Thanksgivings, Thanksgiving and the Civil War/Lincoln's proclamation of a national holiday, Thanksgiving developments of the 20th Century (the Macy Parade, FDR's date-changing fiasco, football games, etc.), Thanksgiving in World Wars I and II, Native American perspectives on Thanksgiving and so on.
In short, THANKSGIVING, THE AMERICAN HOLIDAY is a useful guide charting how this particular holiday developed and evolved over the years and how Thanksgiving has impacted on generations of Americans. Neither exhaustive nor definitive, it is informative, insightful and tugs at the heart a bit. And it would be an excellent resource for report-writers. Recommended.

The Party Planner ReviewMy questions on reading this book were, "who GOES to these parties?" and "who THROWS these parties?" If you can get your mind around those questions, the book is useful.
Point: These parties are expensive. Period. Forget "budget" in any shape, even if you are spray painting your own lanterns laquer red for a Chinese New Year's party, or making table decorations from ToysRUs toys. You could feed a family or two in India for a year with the budget for ANY of the parties in this book, and that might just bother you.
However: I liked this book better than any other party planning book I've ever flipped through because it's about PLANNING, not cooking. He doesn't waste space on recipes, and except in one instance, only gives menu suggestions. I don't cook. My parties are catered from Sam's Club, or potluck. I don't need recipes. I DO need help with thinking through the planning, and suggestions for creating an atmosphere, and pulling it all together to make a memorable event on a $200 budget, and David has suggestions a-plenty. I will definitely do more with my invitations come my next garden party in June.
I hope the people who attend these parties really do have a warm wonderful intimate time. It's also possible they go home and think, "OK, I have to double the budget for MY next party to top that..." But I think that if I dragged David to WalMart with my budget and my guest list, he'd be able to do a pretty respectable job, and that's the sign of a good party planner. The Party Planner Overview

The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life ReviewEllie Krieger is different from the exercise fanatics and diet gurus out there in that she doesn't promise you'll lose 10 pounds or two inches off your waist if you adhere to a strict regimen over the course of a week. Instead, she provides all the tools you'll need to develop a healthy attitude toward eating that doesn't sacrifice flavor or require intensive labor. The crux of her approach is common-sensical: fresh ingredients, lots of whole grains, reasonable portions. But while the idea seems easy enough, Ellie makes it even simpler by outlining what ingredients to keep in stock (for a quick meal anytime) and what small but oh-so-important finishing touches change a dish from bland into brilliant. So far, I've made about a dozen of the recipes in this book (including 4 alone for one meal), and all have been met with rave reviews from the appreciative attendees. I recommend a meal consisting of the Oven-Fried Chicken, Garlic Fries, Zucchini Parmesan Crisps, and finishing off with the Ricotta Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries. Let your oven do all the work, and stop worrying about your waistline!
I am a fan of Ellie's television show and completely agree with her food philosophy. If we all learn to love the way food tastes, instead of over-processing and masking it in fats and chemicals, then we can once again relish our meals instead of feeling guilty about them. Ellie will show you how in this book full of great recipes. Not only does she transform comfort foods like mashed potatoes and meatloaf into her better-for-youversions, but she also provides recipes inspired by a variety of cuisines ranging from Asian, Greek, and Middle-Eastern and covering every meal, including side dishes and desserts.
Don't expect a strict plan or any guaranteed weight loss. Ellie herself doesn't tout the "Never" approach and teaches us all that foods belong in three categories: Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely. The main reason most diets fail is because they are unrealistic and too limiting. Ellie's approach is different; it shows you a better way to eat "The Food You Crave." Anyone who wants to learn how to prepare delicious AND healthful foods should pick up a copy of this book!
