Robert Young Pelton's The World's Most Dangerous Places: 5th Edition Review
I've heard Robert Young Pelton speak, and he is, if anything, even more thoughtful and provocative in person. He has written an extraordinary book that ordinary people will take to be a sensationalist travel guide, while real experts scrutinize every page for the hard truths about the real world that neither the CIA nor the media report.
Unlike clandestine case officers and normal foreign service officers, all of them confined to capital cities and/or relying on third party reporting, Robert Young Pelton actually goes to the scene of the fighting, the scene of the butchery, the scene of the grand thefts, and unlike all these so-called authoritative sources, he actually has had eyeballs on the targets and boots in the mud.
I have learned two important lessons from this book, and from its author Robert Young Pelton:
First, trust no source that has not actually been there. He is not the first to point out that most journalists are "hotel warriors", but his veracity, courage, and insights provide compelling evidence of what journalism could be if it were done properly. Government sources are even worse--it was not until I heard him speak candidly about certain situations that I realized that most of our Embassy reporting--both secret and open--is largely worthless because it is third hand, not direct.
Second, I have learned from this book and the author that sometimes the most important reason for visiting a war zone is to learn about what is NOT happening. His accounts of Chechnya, and his personal first-hand testimony that the Russians were terrorizing their Muslims in the *absence* of any uprising or provocation, are very disturbing. His books offers other accounts of internal terrorism that are being officially ignored by the U.S. Government, and I am most impressed by the value of his work as an alternative source of "national intelligence" and "ground truth".
There are a number of very important works now available to the public on the major threats to any country's national security, and most of them are as unconventional as this one--Laurie Garrett on public health, Marq de Villiers on Water, Joe Thorton on chlorine-based industry and the environment--and some, like Robert D. Kaplan's books on his personal travels, are moving and inspiring reflections on reality as few in the Western world could understand it--but Robert Young Pelton is in my own mind the most structured, the most competent, the most truthful, and hence the most valuable reporter of fact on the world's most dangerous places.
What most readers may not realize until they read this book is that one does not have to travel to these places to be threatened by them--what is happening there today, and what the U.S. government does or does not do about developments in these places, today, will haunt this generation and many generations to follow. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who cares to contemplate the real world right now.

Switching to a Mac For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) ReviewSusan Veatch Golds, Alaskan Apple User Group Member
Product Title: "Switching to a Mac for Dummies"
Author: Arnold Reinhold
Price: $21.99 USA
Publisher/Distributor: Wiley Publishing, Inc.
Website: www.wiley.com/wileyCDA/
Pro: This book was constructed so that a non-computer literate could find, learn and use it effectively during the confusing process of switching from a PC to a Mac.
Con:Needed a good light and strong reading glasses to see the figures inserted in the texts. But when following along with your computer it makes it easier. There were some miss allocations. Such as figure 5-1, the current application was being called iChat instead of Finder. In the discussion of IPhoto, the term ITunes was used several times inadvertently. But ignoring that, even I was able to understand how to use the application.
Moose Rating 1-5 (5 highest): 5
The book's real strength is in the step by step organization of the information. It can help you decide IF you want a Mac; what KIND of Mac do you want; and HOW to set the computer up. Once you have made the decision to switch, you are told how to more smoothly transfer your information from your old PC to the Mac. Security issues are discussed. Ultimately, you are informed as to your choices of how to most securely dispose of your old PC to avoid making public your private files. Then it goes on to the specifics of running the computer with all the tricks to master the most from the machine. Including the various programs that are available on the machine, or available on the internet (either free or for purchase) to help you do anything you could dream you would need while using your new Mac. I was able to even easily use the index and go back and read again the specific areas I needed to re-read to really be able to use the information.
I will give you specific examples on how valuable this book has been in the progression of my development as a new Mac owner.
I switched to a Mac Book Pro in June of 2007. The process was very frustrating as I could not even figure out how to enlarge anything I was working on. Coming from a PC, I was used to grabbing any part of the frame work of the program I was working on to make it larger or smaller. The email "page" on the Mac was so small that it was not functional. Asking for help at the store where it was purchased was a joke. The clerk told me that the Mac had such a good resolution screen, that it was fine the image was small. It was also very clear! This was to enable me to use several applications at once. But if I wanted, they could figure out how to reduce the resolution of the screen for me. Obviously, I searched for another clerk. Then I found out about the lower right hand region has small diagonal lines on the Mac that was the ONLY location for expanding the viewing of the item. If I had had this book, I would have saved myself lots of time and frustration!
Since there is no manual with the Mac Book Pro, I tried to figure out how to work the programs alone. Then my husband read in the paper about the Alaskan Apple User Group having a meeting about Internet Security. Since I was not sure what needed to be done, and I was used to having to buy "protection" for my computer, I went to the November meeting. Then I found out that you could also check out programs to learn about the machine on CD's, or you could possibly do reviews of new information. At the December meeting I gained enough confidence that I asked about this book, and found I could do a review on it if I could read it in 25 days. Talk about an incentive to encourage myself to become educated to make my life easier!
Despite the fact that I had advanced past the decision making time of PC versus Mac and had already set up my machine, this book continued to be very appropriate for me in learning how to actually use and understand what I was really seeing in terms of programs and abbreviations. Normally on my PC when I had used the "HELP" functions, I could never describe or use terms that would elicit any proper response from "HELP." I believe that truly computer literate people have an entirely different language. Without this language, you can not ask questions. This is the first time I have read a book "for Dummies", and I feel that I have finally got a chance to ask "the proper question" in order to get the right answer from "HELP."
Chapter 5 : Mac OS X for Windows Users:
This was very important in explaining the difference between "Window's-Speak" and "Mac-Speak". I was really missing the information I got from the "Control Panel", and had not a clue that it was renamed "System Preferences!" The Table 5-1 gives a nice delineation of these differences. The discussion about "Backspace versus Del versus Delete" was enlightening. Delete on the Mac is really delete! If you want to remove the characters in front of the insertion point (blinking line), you merely press the fn (function) key plus the Delete key and the items to the right are deleted. Very logical, but without this book, I would not have had a clue! The use of two fingers tapping on the trackpad, or the choice to use" control and click" to obtain a "Right Click" was extremely helpful when I did not have my external mouse attached to my laptop. The information on the Finder was a little frustrating because it did not initially disclose that the cool "Finder cover-flow view" must only be on the 10.5 (Leopard) version. Since I have trouble looking at the Figure 5-8, it took me awhile to notice I did not really have the 4th choice to click on. I had had the experience of working on many applications and trying to bounce back and forth. To do so, I was trying to click on a portion of the window to bring the application forward. I needed to shrink, expand and try to move them around to slightly different locations to perform the tasks I wanted. On Page 98, I learned how to press the command key plus the tab key. This brings a docking station like display of the applications you are using. You merely press the tab repeatedly until you land on the application you want, and it brings it to the forefront. Then I learned about the "Expose'" with F9 separating the open windows, F 11 making all the open windows "scurry to the edges so that you can see the desktop. Click in the empty desktop so that you can see the Finder." The mere repeating of the button restores your screen how you were using it. Pretty clever! With your discussion on the Time Machine that is available on OSX 10.5 (Leopard) on the ability to do backups significantly impressed me. I had to hire a computer geek to format my external hard drive to do my back ups on my PC. I could never understand the process fully to retrieve data off the back up. With the ease you described, I believe I will seriously consider purchasing the new Leopard program.
Chapter 6: Moving Your Files from Your PC to the Mac:
If I had not read this book I would have been unable to prepare this article in the .txt format as requested. I would have used the TextEdit program with the .rtf format that was the default position. Without reading Page 129, would be clueless, nor would I have known about the clever "secure trash", nor the Disk Utility on my Mac. The latter cleans up my previously used regularly trashed items that could be still floating around in my Mac. Concern over security on my old PC was addressed by this book. Unfortunately, my PC was no longer able to boot up and I could not take advantage of the ideas to move documents over to my Mac. But taking it to a computer store, they were able to get some of the files off even though they could not really get the computer to fully boot. I did learn how to dispose of the remnant of my PC so I have a method to permanently prevent others from taking further information off the computer.
Chapter 7: Switching Application:
In exploring the IWork application, I was trying to access the tour to explore "Keynote and Pages". However, something went wrong and the "tour" did not start. I tried pushing esc (escape) and command + Q for Quit, and nothing helped. I went back to the "magic page" inside the front cover of this book and found the solution! It was command+option+W, and the window that was locked up in front of me went away! Later I was able to take the tour and see what was offered and I found out that there was an extra charge if I wished to use the program I life '06. Since there is now an I life '08 I will obviously wait.
I wish that I had read this book before I bought the Mac version of Office. I was very intrigued with the information that the Mac has ability to write to .doc. Also with the information that you could use websites such as Google for documents and spreadsheets. Even downloading to your Mac with formats such as .doc, .xl, .csv, .pdf, .rtf, etc. provides lots of other options. However, by not having this information before making my choice, I was not able to know what was fully available in order to let go of my habit of using PC paraphernalia.
I have been frustrated not knowing how to view items sent to my email account from my friends who still have PC's. I wasn't sure what application was needed to open the files of .wma or .wvm that were so easily opened on my PC. I was fearful that accepting "application" changes on the emails without knowing what the problem really was. On Page 147, you solved my problem with a free download. I read in the book that the reason the Mac is safer from viruses is that we have to give approval for each change in an application. This is different from the PC as it requires a high level integration of all processes working together. This makes them susceptible to viruses and worms to do their...Read more›Switching to a Mac For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) Overview

Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Review
Obviously, it is highly desirable to measure what matters and that is especially true of marketing initiatives. Here's the challenge which many (most?) readers will face after they finish reading this volume: Which metrics are the most appropriate for their specific organization? Co-authors Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein offer 50+ and in an ideal business world, every executive can - and will - master all of them. That is possible but highly unlikely. Fortunately, the authors offer a wealth of information and observations that can guide and inform the selection of those metrics that will enable executives to "gather and analyze basic market data, measure the core factors that drive their business models, analyze the profitability of individual customer accounts, and optimize resource allocation among increasingly fragmented media.
To the authors' substantial credit, they make effective use of a number of reader-friendly devices which enliven what would be an otherwise dull textbook and they do without compromising the integrity of research-driven insights which so many books on marketing lack. These devices include definitions, formulas, and brief descriptions of various metrics. They also include within individual chapters several sections, such as "Construction" (e.g. metrics issues concerning their formulation, application, interpretation, and strategic ramifications), "Data Sources, "Complications, and Cautions" (i.e. an analysis of the limitations of the metrics under consideration, and their potential inadequacies once executed), and "Related Metrics and Concepts" (briefly surveyed). This is by no means an "easy read" but will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate rigor.
Although I believe this volume can be of substantial value to executives in almost all organizations (regardless of size or nature), I think it will be of greatest benefit to those - probably in larger companies -- who have an urgent need for accurate and consistent measurement of, for example, the dynamics behind their market share; the profitability of producing, pricing, selling, distributing, and servicing what they offer; and the ROI of marketing initiatives within the framework of enterprise financial metrics.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Ram Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't, Lynda Gratton's Hot Spots: Why Some Teams, Workplaces, and Organizations Buzz with Energy - And Others Don't, Robert J. Herbold's Seduced by Success: How the Best Companies Survive the 9 Traps of Winning, Jack Alexander's Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation, and Michael Useem's The Go Point: When It's Time to Decide--Knowing What to Do and When to Do It.Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Overview

Sailing Skills & Seamanship, BOOK (Us Coast Guard Auxilary Assoc) ReviewUnlike many other sailing texts, this book covered a broad range of boating topics. Clearly not a sailor's fine-tuning tome, this book surprised me, however, by covering sail trim and boat balancing very adequately, and in some cases more clearly than more advanced sailing manuals. Since it's written for sailors in U.S. waters, it covers topics such as trailering, waterway navigation, and rules of the road for the U.S. more specifically than any other text I've seen.
All in all, I'd say this is my top choice for a text for a new sailor who's got down the sailing basics and needs to know the many practical aspects of safe sailing in U.S. waters.Sailing Skills & Seamanship, BOOK (Us Coast Guard Auxilary Assoc) Overview

42 Rules for Driving Success With Books: Success Stories of Corporate and Author Thought Leadership ReviewThis book is reminiscent of junk mail that entices a reader to buy more based upon repetitive success stories and promises to show the secrets that 'they' don't want you to know. Each spurious rule (eg. 'brand yourself', 'build your confidence') is represented by a different author who writes around 300-400 words illustrating in the most indirect way possible the result of what happened when they followed the extraordinarily-vague rule, while also plugging their website or product.
I think my favorite is rule #19 - "Get a Ph.D." - which, apart from being irrelevant to driving success with books, fails to mention a Ph.D. at all in the subsequent explanation. "Books, if they're useful, informative, and well written, encourage people to send work to you," enthuses Shel Horowitz in a blinding example of the obvious. "When you have a book, you pretty much have automatic access to (and exposure on) high-traffic websites such as Amazon.com and Google.com," he continues, failing to mention that this has no bearing on your own website unless the book is popular, and has nothing to do with how SEO actually works.
As a 140 page book, 40 pages are dedicated to the photographs and bios of each author, together with an invitation to write your own 42 rules book, and the catalog of other books available. Take away the introduction and table of contents, and this is a very, very thin read which offers absolutely no substantive information to prospective authors. I agree with the other review entitled "No Value" - I haven't quite figured out if this is a pyramid scheme or some other type of marketing game, but I'd strongly advise against wasting $20 on this. There are many other reputable books written about how to write and get published which aren't assisted by questionable 5-star reviews.42 Rules for Driving Success With Books: Success Stories of Corporate and Author Thought Leadership Overview

Golf for Dummies ReviewI'm not sure about the reader from NYC or the one from Rockford, IL. I went and bought the Complete Idiot's Guide after reading the review by NYC, and I liked it, but it is nowhere near as good as Golf For Dummies, 2nd Ed. Granted, Gary does put in a lot of extra information. But, there's more to the game than swinging the club, and he fills in a lot of holes.
I compared the breakdown of the golf swing in both Idiot and Dummies. The description in Idiot is reasonable, but completely overlooks the role of the wrists in the swing. Dummies has an excellent series of photos that shows the entire swing and how the club head turns - this is essential!
I just started learning a few weeks ago. Last Saturday was my third lesson and I can now hit the ball pretty straight and reasonably far for a beginner. All of the advice my teacher gave me is in Golf for Dummies, but it isn't in the Idiot book. Golf for Dummies has much better drills, better illustrations and about twice as much information, all of which is useful.
I can see myself referring back to Golf for Dummies in the future, but I doubt I will look at the Idiot book again. You might consider Dummies a bit wordy, but what's your hurry? Golf is a game that will take you years to really become good at. Enjoy the process. Gary gives you lots of history and other facts that tell you why certain things are done the way they are. Personally, I appreciate all of the information he provides.
This is a really good book on golf. Buy it.Golf for Dummies Overview

Sales Representative Agreements, Explanations of Terms, Options and Sample Rep Contracts ReviewThis is a most interesting book for sales pros and sales directors alike. Easy to read, but thorough, as it is laid out logically. If you are managing sales reps, or want to enhance your sales relationship from either side of the fence (rep or manager), this is a solid value. The sample agreements provide useful templates that fit most situations. Having been both a star salesman and a successful sales director during a 25 year career, most of the stuff here is known, but this book ties it all up into a nice neat package. It's perhaps equally valuable to other members of the management team who can always benefit from better understanding the sales process and why agreements matter.Sales Representative Agreements, Explanations of Terms, Options and Sample Rep Contracts Overview

Chanel: A Woman of her Own ReviewI found it strange that some readers gave negative or highly critical reviews of this biography. Someone even commented on the difficulty in reading the French names! It's a little late to change Chanel's nationality and thank God! This biography is successful on a number of levels but primarily two: it recounts the fascinating life, in great detail, of the late Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and it puts her professional contribution to the world in context. On a personal level, her life-story reads as a Dickens novel. Her's is a truly "rags-to-riches" story. Chanel was a woman who created a life and a legend against the odds. She was one of those rare and stunning creatures rising from practically nothing to become a household name. Her family was destitute. Her father abandoned her at an orphanage. Her attempts in music and theatre came to nothing. Her sewing skills were atrocious! Only after a young gentleman named Balsan recognized her talent through her unconventional beauty did her true potential begin to emerge. Chanel knew all of the greatest people of her age: Stravinsky, Cocteau, Dali, Misia Sert, and the Duke of Westminster, among others. Many of these people she knew intimately. How tragic that even after these acquaintances and global successes as a designer, Chanel never really found success in love. Professionally, the impact of her designs are still with us today and influencing generations of new designers and artists. From a perspective of fashion, Chanel almost single-handedly pulled the 19th century world into the modern age by pulling women out of corsets and sliding them into pants. The "little black dress" and classic Chanel suit are not only articles of clothing, they are timeless works of art. Madsen has succeeded in writing a biography that does not fall short as other books on Chanel have in the past. His biography begins BEFORE her birth and continues on AFTER her death. He explores her roots and discusses the ongoing impact of her life, while filling in all the opulent details in between. If you want to know who Chanel was and why she is still so important today, pick up this book. Now if they would only do a feature film treatment!Chanel: A Woman of her Own Overview

Speechless: The Erosion of Free Expression in the American Workplace (BK Currents (Hardcover)) ReviewAs a business ethicist, I expected to find in Speechless a detailed discussion of the implications of voice and silence for ethics in organizations, with references to topics like whistle-blowing, groupthink, and moral imagination. I found that discussion in Chapter 9, which is about the right length for it, because those topics have been covered well elsewhere, and Chapter 9 is a good introduction to many of the important works in that area.
The rest of the book treats the restriction of expression in the workplace as an ethical problem of a different order, with implications both for the quality of life of individual employees, and for the quality of participation in political and cultural institutions outside the firm. But despite clear advocacy for greater freedom of expression in the workplace, Speechless also explores the risks that such freedom poses: a hostile working environment, partiality in public bureaucracies, employees driven to distraction by each other, or the legal and reputational threats that can arise when someone says something thoughtless. The result is a thorough, evenhanded, and entertaining study of a perennial problem: with liberty comes liability, both for those who grant them and for those who take them.
Speechless's readable discussions of the relevant legal frameworks and cases are particularly helpful. They facilitate not only understanding the tensions between goods at stake, but also identifying remedies that can be taken at both the public policy and the enlightened-management levels. For scholars interested in exploring the implications of speech and its restriction in the workplace, this book is a useful introduction to the perspectives of law and management on the problem. Managers trying to ascertain what they have a responsibility to control and what they have the freedom to permit will also find Speechless to be a valuable resource . . . as will employees who are curious or nervous about the risk posed to their careers by the scope of their convictions or their recreations.

Nightmare At 20,000 Feet: Horror Stories By Richard Matheson ReviewHis name might not be as big as Stephen King's or Dean Koontz's, but Richard Matheson is nonetheless a master of horror fiction. Even if the name is not familiar, his works are: the title story has been shown in both Twilight Zone the TV show and movie and even been spoofed on the Simpsons. Another story in the collection, Prey, has also become a TV horror classic as part of the 70's movie, Trilogy of Terror. Matheson is also the author of the Incredible Shrinking Man, What Dreams May Come, Somewhere in Time, Stir of Echoes and I Am Legend.
In this set of short stories, Matheson shows he is worth all the praise he is given. The weakest of these stories are merely good and the best are not only great, but classics. Besides his talent to create fantastic horror scenarios and true suspense, he also can leave you thinking at the end of the story. In many of these tales, you are never quite certain if there is something supernatural going on or if it is all imagined by the main character. This intentional ambiguity, done incorrectly can frustrate the reader but in Matheson's hands, it adds an extra level of depth.
If you enjoy horror fiction, this collection is a must. It gives you an opportunity to read one of the most important and underrated persons in the genre.Nightmare At 20,000 Feet: Horror Stories By Richard Matheson Overview

Windows Vista: Beyond the Manual (Books for Professionals by Professionals) ReviewAs an IT professional, I was after a book that cut through the basics and told me what I needed to know about Vista; rather than having to review pages and pages of extraneous content on Microsoft's web pages. This book delivers on its promise, exposing all the underlying technologies that comprise this release of Windows. The sections on Security and Installation were particularly useful to me, but I also enjoyed learning about the new media capabilities of Media Center, Photo Galley and DVD Maker. All in all, this is a great read, easily digestible and a great start for anyone, professional or otherwise, who needs to use Vista.Windows Vista: Beyond the Manual (Books for Professionals by Professionals) Overview

Marketing Genius ReviewA book with a tittle "Marketing genius" creates high expectations. Even higher expectations are created in the foreword, when author claims that this book will awaken a marketing genius inside you.
Sadly, it ain't true. This book is just a compilation of the success stories everyone in the marketing knows by heart: Starbucks, Nike, Apple, you name it. These stories are followed up by such "inspiring" phrases "be creative", "look at what Apple does" and so on. In authors mind, as I understand, these two things should work and bring a marketing genius out of you. I really would like to hear at least one testimonial it did.
To sum it up you can read it if you're a starter in marketing or just want to know more about it. But if it's pat of your job - don't waste your time: this book cannot offer you anything you don't know.Marketing Genius Overview

The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life ReviewEllie Krieger is different from the exercise fanatics and diet gurus out there in that she doesn't promise you'll lose 10 pounds or two inches off your waist if you adhere to a strict regimen over the course of a week. Instead, she provides all the tools you'll need to develop a healthy attitude toward eating that doesn't sacrifice flavor or require intensive labor. The crux of her approach is common-sensical: fresh ingredients, lots of whole grains, reasonable portions. But while the idea seems easy enough, Ellie makes it even simpler by outlining what ingredients to keep in stock (for a quick meal anytime) and what small but oh-so-important finishing touches change a dish from bland into brilliant. So far, I've made about a dozen of the recipes in this book (including 4 alone for one meal), and all have been met with rave reviews from the appreciative attendees. I recommend a meal consisting of the Oven-Fried Chicken, Garlic Fries, Zucchini Parmesan Crisps, and finishing off with the Ricotta Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries. Let your oven do all the work, and stop worrying about your waistline!
I am a fan of Ellie's television show and completely agree with her food philosophy. If we all learn to love the way food tastes, instead of over-processing and masking it in fats and chemicals, then we can once again relish our meals instead of feeling guilty about them. Ellie will show you how in this book full of great recipes. Not only does she transform comfort foods like mashed potatoes and meatloaf into her better-for-youversions, but she also provides recipes inspired by a variety of cuisines ranging from Asian, Greek, and Middle-Eastern and covering every meal, including side dishes and desserts.
Don't expect a strict plan or any guaranteed weight loss. Ellie herself doesn't tout the "Never" approach and teaches us all that foods belong in three categories: Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely. The main reason most diets fail is because they are unrealistic and too limiting. Ellie's approach is different; it shows you a better way to eat "The Food You Crave." Anyone who wants to learn how to prepare delicious AND healthful foods should pick up a copy of this book!

Hotel Front Office Management ReviewOne of the worst books I have ever read period! It's full of useless information, and it's not tailored to every property as it should.
Additionally, The book is filled with obsolete sample forms that no one uses (at least myself and those I know within the industry), making the VERY HIGH price inappropriate
In short, this book "could" be used as a theoritical introduction to the Front Office Management at some junior college's hospitality course, but not as a practical guide for hospitality professionals.Hotel Front Office Management Overview

The Greatest Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy ReviewBeyer is an author who is dedicated to making history interesting and fun, which he does so well in this collection of one page stories. I found the book especially interesting because of the background work the author had put into his research (the imprint of the History Channel did not hurt either) which raised these tidbits above the normal trivia, or potential urban legends. Beyer highlights some things that should not be lost in the mists of history, and points out historical facts that may be glossed over in many other history books. There is nothing earth shattering here, but more than a few will make you scratch your head, or share with others in conversation. A great book for dipping your toe in history - each story is about a page of text and is well illustrated. There is just enough to get you the interesting point without boring you. It's a truly fun and fascinating book. The Greatest Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy Overview

Blame Canada: South Park and Contemporary Culture ReviewThis is a great book about South Park and its relationship to contemporary culture. Many of the insights end up surprising. There are three parts to this book. The first part mentions the impact of South Park on culture and how it became popular and widespread. The second part is about the show itself: the dialogue, sounds, characters, and visuals. The third part deals with the issues presented in the show. There was an extensive amount of research done for this book and it shows. The author is also not a fan, so the insights come from a more neutral perspective, which makes the book an even better read.
The author also spends a lot of time on the impact and popularity of the show, which is unlike most book about tv shows and culture. The characters chapter is long but still unusually short for a tv show and culture book. Most books about TV shows and culture devote and entire unit and at least 40 pages to talk about the characters. Because she only devotes a chapter, there could have easily been more said about the characters.
All in all, if you are a fan of South Park or like reading about popular culture, then you should read this book. It is entertaining, insightful, and enjoyable.Blame Canada: South Park and Contemporary Culture Overview

The Debian System: Concepts and Techniques ReviewForget about debian being hard to install. Pick up a copy of this book, and be on your way to enjoying an operating system that is well built, and orders of magnitude more stable than Windows. In fact, I had zero installation issues with debian -- which compared favorably even with my attempts to install Fedora, another popular and well-regarded Linux distribution.
I liked this book because, finally, an author has had the presence of mind to write a book that did not regurgitate Unix commands like 'ls' and 'vi' for the gazillionth time. The focus is on debian, and only on those parts that make debian unique -- the culture of the "debian project", the notoriety for its alleged difficulty of installation (which I have not experienced), the speed and timeliness of its releases (not!), and homage to that supreme program -- apt-get and its close relatives.
Those new to Linux may do well to first read a general Unix/Linux book before delving into this one. They will also be well served by first playing around with Knoppix (...) which is a debian derivative that does not require a hard-disk install. This is especially useful if you are not (yet) prepared to wipe your hard disk clean of Windows.
If you're not a rank beginner, buy this book, and install Debian 3.1 which is on the accompanying DVD. People wanting a more polished and up-to-date debian might want to try its close cousin, Ubuntu (...). While individual packages might vary somewhat, the concepts presented in this book are applicable across debian and its progeny (including Knoppix and Ubuntu).
In summary, raise the quality of your Linux reading a few notches by purchasing this book, and raise the quality of your personal computer usage by installing debian or its derivatives. The Debian System: Concepts and Techniques Overview
