Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Review
Obviously, it is highly desirable to measure what matters and that is especially true of marketing initiatives. Here's the challenge which many (most?) readers will face after they finish reading this volume: Which metrics are the most appropriate for their specific organization? Co-authors Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein offer 50+ and in an ideal business world, every executive can - and will - master all of them. That is possible but highly unlikely. Fortunately, the authors offer a wealth of information and observations that can guide and inform the selection of those metrics that will enable executives to "gather and analyze basic market data, measure the core factors that drive their business models, analyze the profitability of individual customer accounts, and optimize resource allocation among increasingly fragmented media.
To the authors' substantial credit, they make effective use of a number of reader-friendly devices which enliven what would be an otherwise dull textbook and they do without compromising the integrity of research-driven insights which so many books on marketing lack. These devices include definitions, formulas, and brief descriptions of various metrics. They also include within individual chapters several sections, such as "Construction" (e.g. metrics issues concerning their formulation, application, interpretation, and strategic ramifications), "Data Sources, "Complications, and Cautions" (i.e. an analysis of the limitations of the metrics under consideration, and their potential inadequacies once executed), and "Related Metrics and Concepts" (briefly surveyed). This is by no means an "easy read" but will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate rigor.
Although I believe this volume can be of substantial value to executives in almost all organizations (regardless of size or nature), I think it will be of greatest benefit to those - probably in larger companies -- who have an urgent need for accurate and consistent measurement of, for example, the dynamics behind their market share; the profitability of producing, pricing, selling, distributing, and servicing what they offer; and the ROI of marketing initiatives within the framework of enterprise financial metrics.

Service Quality (Marketing Science Institute (MSI) Relevant Knowledge Series) ReviewThis is one of the monographs in the Relevant Knowledge Series published by the Marketing Research Institute. As Leigh M. McAlister explains in the Foreword, "Zeithaml and Parasuraman offer readers a rigorous and practical overview of service quality: how to define it, how to measure it, and how to improve customer service performance. They also discuss growing evidence of the strong links between service quality, customer loyalty, and profitability, and the still-emerging challenges of delivering quality service via the Internet." Quite true.
I especially appreciate the provision of an Executive Summary, followed by the authors' Introduction. This approach enables their reader to read strategically the material which follows, guided and informed -- but not limited -- by the remarks which precede it. Of special interest to me is what Zeithaml and Parasuraman have to say about the ten "Dimensions" of customers' assessments of service quality. They range from "Tangible" (e.g. appearance of physical facilities, equipment, personnel, and communication materials" to "Understanding the Customer" (i.e. making the effort to know customers and their needs). Basic stuff. No head-snapping revelations. However, Zeithaml and Parasuraman skillfully stress and correlate key points between and among the ten "Dimensions."
I was also interested in their analysis of SERVQUAL (introduced in 1988), an instrument designed by the marketing research team of Parasuraman, Leonard Berry,and Zeithaml (PB&Z). Through numerous qualitative studies, they evolved a set of five dimensions which have been consistently ranked by customers to be most important for service quality, regardless of service industry. These dimensions are defined as follows:
Tangibles: appearance of physical facilities, equipment, personnel, and communication materials;
Reliability: ability to perform the promised service dependably and accurately;
Responsiveness: willingness to help customers and provide prompt service;
Assurance: knowledge and courtesy of employees and their ability to convey trust and confidence; and
Empathy: the caring, individualized attention the firm provides its customers
Based on the five SERVQUAL dimensions, the researchers also developed a survey instrument to measure the gap between customers' expectation for excellence and their perception of actual service delivered. The SERVQUAL instrument helps service providers understand both customer expectations and perceptions of specific services, as well as quality improvements over time. It may also help target specific service elements requiring improvement, and training opportunities for staff.
Those who wish to learn more about SERVQUAL are urged to check out Raymond P. Fisk, Stephen W. Brown, and Mary Jo Bitner's "Tracking the Evolution of the Services Marketing Literature," Journal of Retailing 69 (published in 1993), pages 61-103; also Zeithaml, Parasuraman, and Berry's Delivering Quality Service: Balancing Customer Perceptions and Expectations, published by The Free Press in 1990.
When conducting workshops on customer service, I always begin with this observation: "I have both bad news and good news. First the bad news: Customer service has never been worse. Now the good news: Customer service has never been worse." Those organizations which reduce (if not eliminate) the gap between their customers' expectation for excellence and their perception of actual service delivered are the only organizations which will not only survive but prosper.

The way Ms. Shepard organizes the book makes it very easy to follow and utilize. She takes the reader systematically through the processes of selecting a business, setting up a home office, making a business plan, finance options and advertising. I found the chapter on self-evaluation to be a valuable tool. In this chapter, Ms. Shepard has the reader ask themselves the hard questions to determine if they are truly ready to start their own business and to find out what direction would be the best to take. This aspect of the book shows that it is not a scheme to become a millionaire overnight. Instead, this publication is a serious guidebook shows the reader their strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the book provides the reader with resources to strengthen their skills if they need to.
I feel that this book is not just a guide to starting a business, but also one that is a reference in order to keep a home based business on track. Finally there is a book that gives the aspiring entrepreneur helpful and practical advice in plain straightforward language.

No B.S. Business Success in The New Economy ReviewAs more and more of us leave our W2 jobs for the life of an entrepreneur, this book becomes a must read. This book is written in clear, straight forward, easy to read language which contributes to its "can't put it down appeal."
Using his experience in business combined with his marketing mastery, Dan Kennedy lays out philosophies and practices every entrepreneur should master. Kennedy first wrote this book in 1993, with an update completed in 2004. Today's changing economic conditions caused Kennedy to once again update the book for this 2010 edition.
What is interesting to note is that Kennedy has not needed to change any of the principles he believes make business success possible, principles he first laid out in the first 1993 edition. What he has changed in this edition is the tactics, strategies and applications he recommends entrepreneurs use today. These have all been updated to reflect operating conditions in what Kennedy calls today's new economy.

How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office Live ReviewBecause I was new to Microsoft Office Live, I bought this book, hoping it would help me. It did not. I was only looking for the basics. The book does not list the steps necessary to complete an action, is confusing, and rambles around without coming to the point. It could have been, and should have been, writen in 150 pages instead of the nearly 400 it used. I had read the help pages in the program's help sections and expected the book to expound upon them. With neary 400 pages, it definitely should have. Not only did it not do this, it did not even mirror the information given in the "help" sections of the program. Often times, I thought it was written by a Microsoft employee since it spent so much time talking about how much better the Microsoft Live program was than others of its kind. Maybe, if you are an advanced user, this book would work for you. But if you're a novice, I'd suggest you try another book.How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office Live Overview

Hotel Management and Operations ReviewMy review is based on having used Dr. Rutherford's book the past consecutive 7 semesters (incl summer) at Hawaii Pacific University's Travel Industry Management program.
The compilation of articles is ideal for us because chapters are short, but comprehensive and interesting enough to retain student attention. 95% of my students are foreigners, and my average class size is 30 students from at least a dozen countries.
Chapters have numerous references, and all the chapters have challenging case studies except Finance.
This particular construction lends itself to a variety of delivery techniques, as stated in the Preface.
My wish list for the 3rd edition would include: an instructor's manual or workbook, a testbank of questions, e-book version, reducing the content on Marketing (almost double the amount of information in other chapters), and adding a section on Information Technology.

Marketing Shortcuts for the Self-Employed: Leverage Resources, Establish Online Credibility and Crush Your Competition ReviewI just attended a seminar by Mr. Schwerdtfeger and the only thing less than excellent about it was trying to pronounce his last name. I am a web business consultant and the problem is that the possibilities of social media are endless. Mr. Schwerdtfeger makes the steps that work clear and sorts out clearly what does and what does not work, and how exactly to use each form of social media. Each chapter is about 4 pages on one subject, and has a checklist of action steps at the end. This is as close to an action plan as you can find. Anyone using or needing to use social media must have this book. He doesn't say "Use Twitter," he tells you how to make it work for you. He doesn't say "Use Linkedin," but tells you what works and doesn't. BTW--he gave an excellent presentation, but you would also want the book as the details are outlined there. I have been to the workshop, reviewed the book, and read the first 8 chapters. Social Media Playbook for Business: Reaching Your Online Community with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and More ReviewThere are two types of books about Social Media Marketing. The first type is a down-and-dirty laundry list of every social media under the sun with detailed information on how to set up a page, put in a nifty background image, post a post, and every other esoterica. But very little theory. The second type is a theory book with lots of mind candy, but short on the details.
Funk's book is more the latter, a theory book. It has lots of interesting theory and tidbits, but few web links and few "how to" examples. It's a concept book, one that gets your mind thinking. It doesn't give you a plan, or a concrete laundry list of to do's. So if you buy this book, also buy a more practical book on Social Media Marketing (or take a class on SMM; I teach Social media Marketing online and in San Francisco - just Google 'Jason McDonald' to find my classes).
But, this book has one precious amazing chapter: Fails and Fiascos. It is the ONLY book I have every read on SMM, and I read a lot of them, that discusses blazing failures. I read these books on BART on my way up to my own Social Media Marketing classes in the city, and I was laughing out loud at 'Jennifer Laycock and the Pork Board,' 'T&J Towing,' and 'Monster Versus Vermonster.' Funk does an amazing job describing these 'Social Media Fails' and he gives you great feedback and food for thought on what might work, and what might blow up in your face in terms of Social Media Marketing.
Most of these books are just cheerleaders for social media. Funk actually gives you some of the down and dirty, explaining - for instance - that the vast majority of Twitter and Facebook pages for businesses just languish in cyberspace.
For that, this book is worth a buy and I will recommend it to my own students who want not to be the next 'Epic Fail' of Social Media but the next 'Epic Success.'Social Media Playbook for Business: Reaching Your Online Community with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and More Overview

Like 95% of small business owners, I'm so clueless about using social media for my business (I'm great at posting photos of my kids and me hiking) that I would not have even read any book on social media if I didn't know Dave (full disclosure - we're good friends, but no one is making me write this review, and I'm being 100% honest, which is easy in this case, thank goodness. Silence was always an option). I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the same man who machine guns concise tweets and posts all day long can also write long-form so engagingly and informatively. The book is easy to read, complete with useful action items at the end of every chapter, and loaded with real-world examples. From Verizon Fios to United Airlines, practical stories of real-world online successes and failures fill the book. His explanation and definition of how a company needs to be engaged with it's customers is worth the price alone. It's part 21st-century marketing manifesto and part social media owners manual.
