Sales Promotion: How to Create, Implement and Integrate Campaigns that Really Work ReviewThe author clearly has a point of view, but you may not share it. I didn't see how the author's polemic stance was supposed to contribute to a book about sales promotion. Because of the author's extreme views, I could not imagine using this book as a sales promotion text.Sales Promotion: How to Create, Implement and Integrate Campaigns that Really Work Overview

Outcome-Based Marketing New Rules for Marketing on the Web ReviewJohn is one of the most savvy marketers I know. His sage advice is field focused and road tested. He's been in the trenches of both technical marketing as well as years of helping small business find the on-ramp to using the Internet to gain visibility for their brand and products.
The approach of this book is comprehensive yet modular -- you don't have to read through the whole book to begin to get value from what you've learned from each section. John breaks it out into easy-to-consume "chunks" that teach you not only the concepts of Internet marketing, but also the principles of why you do these things. Then he takes you through the how of implementing. The book is particularly well arranged with helpful navigational tools to let you know where you are and summary comments at the end of each section to reinforce what you've learned.
Starting with strategic thinking, he outlines the tactical action items necessary to reach the goals that a company has set. He addresses the different roles in an organization, and how each one manages or contributes to the marketing effort.
But the big payoff is how John explains the use of the major social platforms. He discusses the "rules of the road" for each of them -- LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter... even Foursquare -- how each is unique, addressing different user populations, use cases, and target audiences. He separates the fact from the fad. And he keeps you out of trouble by explaining the special "Netiquette" of each.
John's particular expertise is SEO, Search Engine Optimization, and I know of no one who is better at doing it. He's been helping companies for years raise their visibility on the Internet, and getting them the most bang for the buck from their web advertising dollar.
This is a uniquely valuable book for any company to either start their online marketing efforts, or to a help a company that is already "on line" to step up their game to leverage latest social networks and platforms to expand their web presence.

Marketing Accountability: A New Metrics Model to Measure Marketing Effectiveness ReviewForget the past; marketing managers are now accountable for the financial and sales results they achieve with the money they spend. They can claim - with the backing of some marketing professors - that too many factors in the sales and marketing orbit are out of their control: the economy, fickle consumers, onerous competition, balky delivery problems, murky customer service, and so on. True, all of these real-life happenstances can undermine clever ads and promotions. Even so, corporate executives are no longer willing to give marketing a pass on accountability. Professor Malcolm McDonald and marketing measurement expert Peter Mouncey offer a useful solution: a layered evaluation system that firms can apply to align their marketing activities with their strategies and financial results. The authors provide metrics and tactics marketers can rely on to substantiate the impact of their work. The book is pretty technical, but its clear, two-color layout helps make its charts and graphs more accessible. getAbstract recommends it most warmly to marketers who already have some analytical expertise.Marketing Accountability: A New Metrics Model to Measure Marketing Effectiveness Overview

YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour a Day ReviewWhen I received YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour a Day I dove straight into it. I'm a technical person and have been working with Marketers all my life either to build systems or help in presales engagements. As Marketing has is becoming an online experience more and more, it makes sense to arm oneself with knowledge of the various media options. YupTube, like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are become forces to deal with in the online world.
Initially I expected a Step by Step, how-to guide. However as I dug through the book I kept asking myself when I was going to get to the first step. It isn't until halfway in that I started to find some technical aspects of how-to. But even these were not the "here's how" I expected. After completing the book, I initially felt I had not really gotten what I had hoped for.
However, I then reread the book. This time with a marketer's perspective. It reads more like a novel than an procedures manual and has one linger and investigate how others are engaging community and creating effective followings through YouTube Marketing. My opinion changed from a (2) to (4) stars after that insight. If you are looking for a technical step by step of loading videos, skip this book. If however, you want to get a flavor of how ours are being successful marketing with you tube and the elements to build your own campaigns. This is worth the investment and a second reading.

Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Optimization: Drive Traffic, Boost Conversion Rates and Make Tons of Money ReviewThis is by far the best book ever written on SEO!
I have been a 'student' of SEO for several years now and the biggest challenge I faced when I first started to tackle this topic was the enormous overload of information. It was mind boggling and extremely frustrating trying to sift through the hype in order to get to an author, someone with 'real' hands-on experience, who could take you behind the scenes in layman terms and teach something that is considered a complicated subject.
I not only purchased his first book, I quickly purchased the 2nd edition when it was released - I was not disappointed! I had dog-eared the first edition and thought that I would be able to move through his latest edition much quicker - I was wrong. They say sequels are not as good as the first release - maybe so, but Jon exceeds his first edition by miles. His latest release has now become my #1 SEO reference source in my library.
Whether your a novice or somewhere in the middle and you have avoided tackling SEO - STOP! Jon will take you by the hands and lead you in the right direction using 'White Hat' SEO principles - period! Thanks Jon!!!
BTW, to the reader - I was not paid nor was I asked to write this review.Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Optimization: Drive Traffic, Boost Conversion Rates and Make Tons of Money Overview

The Network Is Your Customer: Five Strategies to Thrive in a Digital Age ReviewThis is a fabulous book. A lot of marketing experts offer half-baked hints and tips for exploiting the potential of social networks. Rogers, however, has thought long and hard about the implications of the network for companies, and he applies his intelligent analysis to examples in various industries and in politics. His five strategies derive from this analysis. They're clearly presented and supremely actionable. Among the millions of words written about marketing in the digital age, this book stands out as really insightful and important. If you want a deep understanding of the implications of digital connections for marketing, as well as some practical tools you can implement in your own enterprise, this is the book you want. I recommend it very highly. The Network Is Your Customer: Five Strategies to Thrive in a Digital Age Overview

Marketing 2.0: Bridging the Gap between Seller and Buyer through Social Media Marketing ReviewI have read many of the latest social media marketing books out there and have found that they present the topic at too high a level. They seem to try and convince you that social media is the next big thing in marketing. For those of us that have been out there and seeing firsthand that social media is taking over, we need a book with a little more meat. A book that starts to get down into the nuts and bolts of how to use social media marketing in your organization and give you some firepower to convince upper management. Voice-of-the-Customer Marketing: A Revolutionary 5-Step Process to Create Customers Who Care, Spend, and Stay ReviewThis is a good complement to companies who wish to use buyers' language and buyer behaviors to drive their own growth in content marketing. Roman is very experienced in Voice Of the Customer (VOC) work and this book is immediately useful to you. He is a pragmatist with lots of street cred in this area. Each chapter has clear and useful case studies. Some points:
At the end of the day companies do not change because of data,. They change because of VOC.
68 % of customer defection takes place because customers feel poorly treated.
95 % of complaining customers will do business with you again if you resolve the complaint instantly.
Are you guilty of customer manipulation? (You can't get this data until you fill in this form and allow us to drown you in untargeted emails.)
Companies that outsourced their call centers often fail faster.
Very good addition to your marketing library. It will prevent you from making some serious blunders.Voice-of-the-Customer Marketing: A Revolutionary 5-Step Process to Create Customers Who Care, Spend, and Stay Overview

Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message ReviewOne of the first things that struck me when I began reading Citizen Marketers, was the ability that Ben and Jackie (calling them McConnell and Huba just doesn't fit) have to take a concept as misunderstood as Social Media, and scale it down to where it is accessible to all, and to do so without talking down to the reader. In fact, the book does such a good job of giving background on the various forms of social media, that it can double as a general primer on the subject.
But where CM shines is in explaining what exactly Citizen Marketing is, who these people are, and what motivates them. I'll be honest, going into reading this book, I was a bit worried that this would simply be a collection of case studies providing examples of citizen marketing, bookended with an introduction and conclusion chapter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Ben and Jackie have done exhaustive research into the subject of citizen marketing, and instead of simply rehashing examples such as the CGM buzz behind Snakes on a Plane, Jarvis' Dell Hell, or the liberation of Fiona Apple (quite possibly my favorite story in the book, which I'd never heard of previously), Ben and Jackie talked to all the parties involved, and discovered what they did, why they did it, and who they did it for.
Their conclusion was that they were dealing with, concerned citizens. Citizens whose love of their favorite brand compelled them to take action on its behalf. And thanks to the rise of the internet, and more specifically social media, those concerned citizens not only have the tools necessary to produce their own brand marketing, they have the ability to reach others, and mobilize them to share their cause. One person's blog post lamenting the cancellation of a favorite TV show can blossom into a full-fledged petition drive that saves the series. A bad customer service experience at a fast food restaurant can be recorded and uploaded to YouTube within minutes. Jarvis' post about his dissatisfaction over his Dell erupted into Dell Hell, which eventually forced the Austin-based computer maker to totally re-examine their customer-service, and revamp their policy on reading and responding to bloggers(IOW, creating a policy for reading and responding to bloggers).
But in my opinion, the heart of the book lies in Ben and Jackie's breakdown of Citizen Marketers into four distinct categories, which they have dubbed 'The Four Fs', all with their own motivations for their actions:
1. Filters
The Filters collect all manner of stories, blog posts, podcasts, etc. related to a specific topic, and present them in one place. These filters serve mainly as an aggregator for content in all forms related to a particular topic, but also add their own analysis and commentary on occasion.
2. Fanatics
The Fanatics are very similar to evangelists. They love(obsess?) over their favorite brand/product/person/company, and are committed to informing others about this topic. They are in the truest sense of the term 'Customer Evangelist'. But they also have great love for the brand/company/person, and aren't afraid to criticize any action that they feel is detrimental to its progress.
3. Facilitators
Facilitators are community creators/builders. They bring like-minded individuals together around a central framework, usually an only forum or blog. Ben and Jackie liken them to 'online mayors'.
4. Firecrackers
Firecrackers are the one-hit wonders of citizen marketers. They may create a hit sensation viral video, or a blogging meme, and then never be heard from again. As with their namesake, they burn very brightly and quickly, and burn out just as rapidly.
In conclusion, buy this book. It isn't a marketing book, it's a book about your community of customers. What motivates them, and what inspires them to take action, both on behalf of, and against your brand. A customer is shaken from their apathy toward a brand, and spurned to action either in response to a brand's indifference towards them, or as a result of the brand's reaching out and offering the hand of empowerment to them. Right now your brand likely sits on one side of this fence, and gaining a better understanding of your customers and what gives them the incentive to act, will help you understand how they view you.

Accelerate: Move Your Business Forward Through the Convergence of Search, Social & Content Marketing ReviewContent marketing has become a necessary step in marketing and promoting any online business (or online business presence). As a publisher who owns several web sites, I know this to be true. And while it's easy enough to "publish" content online, creating and marketing "quality content" is an entirely different story.
This book teaches publishers and marketers how to actually do it... successfully and from one of the best in the business. Arnie doesn't simply provide "head knowledge" but shares strategy from his own success as a content marketer.
I thought I was a pretty decent content marketer but learned so many new things after reading this helpful and resourceful guide. In fact, Accelerate! will be a book that I refer to again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone that is involved in online marketing.Accelerate: Move Your Business Forward Through the Convergence of Search, Social & Content Marketing Overview

Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms: The Guide to Establishing Credibility and Accelerating Relationships (Wiley Professional Advisory) ReviewMichelle Golden's book, "Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms" is incredibly valuable and worthwhile, right from the start. It may be the definitive book right now to use to understand what "social media" really means and then implement and apply it to your professional firm.
The book is written in a very conversational, informative style, which will be extremely helpful to those new to "social media," as well as those already actively using Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook and blogging for business purposes, who want to learn more and go to the next level.
The book is full of real examples, definitions and adaptable suggestions. It will help you to think about your "strategy" and how to implement social media into your business. The book is very well designed, so that it can either be read through, or used as a reference tool to learn more about a specific topic. Michelle clearly explains the rationale and issues regarding social media in general (which is outstanding), then provides the What, Why, and How to use each of these tools, as well as Tips for each. She has even included a very detailed footnote section, for those interested in further reading or support for her content, as well as a thorough Glossary.

This book will definitely be helpful to professional firms (both small and large, for a partner in charge or the social media "champion"), as well as anyone else who has an interest in applying social media for their business. This is an excellent book, which I highly recommend. Anyone who wants to learn more about this topic will find this a must-have book.
Disclosure: I have no relationship with the author of this book, other than being "connected" via Twitter.

Social Media Marketing: The Next Generation of Business Engagement ReviewI've read both of David's social business books and found them very useful. You will learn a lot from his books, but you must be ready to put in the time to complete the exercises and follow up (reading additional articles, looking up experts that Dave mentions, etc).
Dave is one of few who talks about Promise vs. Delivery (marketing & operations) and the importance of holistic touch point analysis. His feedback loop for social media is right on. The information on touch points, promise vs. delivery, and social business funnel are alone worth the price of the first book.

I highly suggest reading Dave's first book, completing the exercises, and then moving on to the second book. I also recommend that you drop a copy of the second book on your Senior Marketing Manager's desk.Social Media Marketing: The Next Generation of Business Engagement Overview

The NOW Revolution: 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter and More Social ReviewIn case you've been living in a cave, Jay Baer and Amber Naslund have teamed up and published The NOW Revolution - 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter, and More Social.
Their new book has been receiving rave reviews and I received a copy with the understanding that I would share my thoughts after reading it...
There is a high probability that this book will frustrate you.
Yes... frustrate you, but follow me here. Jay and Amber have decided to tackle the challenge businesses are facing to adjust to being social and not just doing social. For those of us in or around the "social" industry, we completely grasp this concept.
The NOW Revolution is organized into seven sections - the 7 shifts mentioned in the title. Each shift walks us through the process of becoming social, scalable and sustainable. There are action items, questions, summaries and plenty of additional documents linked via Microsoft Tag technology.
But, you're wondering why this book may frustrate you.
Most companies are not social.
Even the companies that do social.
Most companies have processes and organizational hierarchies that inhibit being social.
If you have a finger on the pulse of where you work... there is a good chance that reading an actionable guide of what you should or can do to infuse social into your business will lead you to the conclusion How the *$&^ am I going to make this happen?
Being a social company is not a fluffy thing. It isn't a trendy thing. It isn't creating cool content that is sharable. It is changing the entire culture of your organization and embracing the fact that there are TONS of things out of your control.
If this was an easy thing to do, we wouldn't need a book, guide, agency or consultant to help.
What will you get out of The NOW Revolution?
- Lots of ideas for things to do within the workplace
- A better understanding of scaling social
- What to look for and cultivate in employees to become more social
- How to handle real-time crises
- A more in-depth knowledge of what listening and monitoring really means
- Potentially frustrated, depressed or overwhelmed trying to make this happen
Again, I'd like to reinforce the fact that if this was easy... every company would be social. This book when read, understood and placed in the correct hands can be a catalyst to help you start the process of becoming social.
Who should read this?
- Ambitious, social savvy folks that don't mind overcoming adversity
- Executives who don't want to be years behind the curve (hint: you're already a few behind)
- Agencies and consultants that are tasked with improving or creating social strategies and business units
This book isn't a get rich quick scheme. It isn't a guide to monetize your blog. It isn't a direct aide to your personal brand. It isn't something one person can read and do themselves. However, this book is one that can be passed around to a few key folks and used as a guide to restructure, revamp, create or destroy business practices and processes.
The NOW Revolution is one of the better books I've seen to tackle the business and organizational challenges of social media and give you a roadmap to improve things. The NOW Revolution: 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter and More Social Overview

The Social Media Management Handbook: Everything You Need To Know To Get Social Media Working In Your Business ReviewIn 18 chapters this book places the rise of social media in several contexts: generational, technological, and economic. Chapters address how adopting social media affects a company's marketing and sales, customer service and support, platforms and IT infrastructure, employee responsibilities, recruiting practices, and the duties of the chief information officer and chief marketing officer. The 21 contributing authors explain why social media policies must cross departmental boundaries and isolated practices. They discuss how marketers and business analysts need to adopt new measurement methods to account for the streams of brand-related information consumers constantly post to the web. A company can define its ROI in social media from many angles, including an consumer attitudinal perspective, a behavioral perspective, and an organizational standpoint, as well as from a transactional or conversion standpoint. The book recommends that companies adopt an emerging online communication discipline called Social Community Marketing. From this perspective, brand-building efforts evolve from a mass-marketing model (which aims to acquire as many customers as possible) to a more targeted, tailored approach that initiates and maintains genuine conversations with customers. The Social Media Management Handbook: Everything You Need To Know To Get Social Media Working In Your Business Overview

Killer Facebook Ads: Master Cutting-Edge Facebook Advertising Techniques ReviewThis is the book on Facebook that many marketers have been waiting for.
Most books on Facebook delve deeply into the community and social aspects but don't really cover the different beast that is Facebook Advertising. While you need to understand how to address and network with the Facebook community in order to market to them, to run any kind of Facebook Advertising campaign you really need in-depth information on how to set it up and effectively make use of all the various targeting options. This book provides just that.
It goes deep into all the different ways to target and create your ads and how to optimize your campaigns for maximum performance. It covers everything about using the Facebook Ads Manager (not a very intuitive system) and also gives invaluable information on various segments you should target depending on the audience demographic you are trying to reach. The real key to Facebook Advertising is utilizing the demographic targeting capabilities to your best advantage, and this book explains that fully, with checklists and step-by-step guides that you can utilize immediately.
Marty covers all this in his own inimitable, yet accessible style, providing an easy read yet an invaluable reference tool. I've heard him speak at many conferences over the years and he's always engaging, yet thought provoking, guaranteed to take a concept by the horns and make you think of it in a different way. His written style is the same way and your approach to Facebook Advertising will never be the same.
While newer marketers, small businesses or entrepreneurs might find all this a bit daunting and technical, learning to truly take advantage of the the Facebook Advertising platform will put you way ahead of most of your competitors and allow you reach one of the largest, and still growing, groups of potential customers on the web. Don't let that opportunity pass you by. Marty and his team have run hundreds of Facebook campaigns for companies large and small, and have learned a lot along the way. He shares a lot of that learning here, so we can also take it and use it to our advantage.
This book will sit on my reference shelf for a long time. Thanks, Marty.Killer Facebook Ads: Master Cutting-Edge Facebook Advertising Techniques Overview

Social Media Metrics Secrets ReviewNo book, no person, no tool contains a silver bullet for measuring and analyzing social media, and Lovett doesn't claim to do so anywhere in his book. One of many quotable quotes to that effect actually leads off Chapter 7: "If you flipped straight to this chapter in hopes of finding the magic solution for calculating the return on investment (ROI) in social media, let me put a pin in that thought balloon straight away." But, what the book *does* offer, and offers in spades, are a range of frameworks and pseudo-formulas ("pseudo" in a good way -- allowing for differing business environments and for a diverse range of social media channels, some of which, likely, do not yet exist) for approaching the *meaningful* measurement of social media, rather than simply the spitting out of readily available data. And, beyond simply offering the bromide of, "Tie your social media efforts to business results," Lovett provides a range of smart approaches (SMART being one of the time-tested approaches offered...and Lovett extends that to a SMARTER approach) *actually* measure performance and analyze results in the messy, messy world that is social media.
The book also covers a range of topics that are adjacent to the core mechanics of social media measurement -- eloquently articulating the social media imperative (if you are a marketer who still doubts whether the phenomenon is "real" and need further convincing), explaining how and why the "marketing funnel" is broken (it really always has been...but social media has really brought that to light and made the funnel paradigm an unworkable construct), assessing how businesses are fundamentally changing the ways they operate and interact with consumers, and even sounding a cautionary note when it comes to consumer privacy.
It's not a book to sit down and skim in an evening (although it is nicely modularized so that individual chapters can stand alone), but, rather, one to sit down and read with a highlighter, a pen, and a notepad, and Post-it flags for key pages (or...a Kindle and digital note-taking devices...but this review is for the paperback version!).Social Media Metrics Secrets Overview

The New Community Rules: Marketing on the Social Web ReviewIn "New Community Rules" the author has created a handbook that is not only an excellent read, but also an excellent primer for any organization or enterpreneur trying to answer the question, "So what can this social media stuff do for me?"
In a methodical approach, covering all the bases of social media as it exists today, the author will walk you through the various aspects of social media marketing and how to use each of them to strengthen your company or brand. She teaches you the do's and don'ts of the social mediasphere -- and as many marketing folks know, the don'ts are probably one of the most valuable lessons you can ever learn. For example, don't use social media to try and push your products on people who haven't engaged with you -- it simply will not work.
The book itself was written for folks who probably haven't had much experience in the social media sphere. It not only walks you through the various offerings out there (from Facebook to Flickr; from Digg to Twitter) but also how each one of them is used -- and who uses them. It's important to note, and the author does a good job of this, that not every social media site is meant for every type of person or brand. Just like a focus group, you have to find the right environment for your social media efforts.
Anyone who is involved in marketing will find this book invaluable. The only drawback to it is that references to sites and such are very much based on what we know now, in 2009, to be true. No doubt in a few years the sites will have changed, but the principles behind social media marketing and interacting with your customers will still be the same.

Everywhere: Comprehensive Digital Business Strategy for the Social Media Era ReviewI just finished this book and it does a great job describing the dynamic now in play at every organization regarding social media. It illustrated how social media is going on a whirlwind tour throughout your organization touching areas I never expected it to touch. It's not like the early days of the internet - where you can hire a bunch of coders, stick them in a corner and have them create your website and do all things web - its much more involved and truly touches "everywhere" in your organization. Because of that you need a comprehensive strategy that will involve the whole organization and leverage the human network and human capital typically trapped in organizations of all sizes. This book does an excellent job of explaining and then illustrating with real world examples how to create a strategy that will unlock the power hidden everywhere in your organization. Excellent read - thank you Larry!Everywhere: Comprehensive Digital Business Strategy for the Social Media Era Overview

Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day ReviewAny user of Facebook needs this book. If you are a small business owner or active online promoting your brand it really helps to have a guide and a shortcut to being effective online.
I first met Mari Smith online as I was getting my profile and fan pages up and operating.
Since then I found that she is THE leader in anything Facebook and is accessible from her fan page to help with any updates or questions that might come up.
What I liked about Facebook Marketing An Hour a Day is that it gives you a background on Facebook, defines it, and then helps guide you into developing a strategy and how to measure it.
In addition it also teaches you how to use pages and groups, how to use ads, and advanced tactics--so it is great for the average user or the small business person or online marketing teams.
I selected the Kindle edition because of the rapidly changing nature of social media so I could get it right away.
Things in social media change so fast (just like Facebook's new revamps over the last two weeks) so I do encourage you to download and begin using it right away.
This book is well worth the investment--go get it now and then go find MariSmith on Facebook!Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day Overview

Social Media ROI: Managing and Measuring Social Media Efforts in Your Organization (Que Biz-Tech) ReviewROI - Doesn't Mean Return on Ignorance - it means Social Media Marketing Return on Investment (ROI)
As someone who teach Social Media Marketing in San Francisco and online (Google 'Jason McDonald' or click on my Amazon profile to connect), I eagerly awaited the UPS man with her delivery of a book claiming to help us measure the Return on Investment of Social Media Marketing. I wondered, would the measurement by an increase in Twitter followers, Facebook likes, LinkedIn connections, YouTube views, or perhaps the Holy Grail of marketing - actual conversions to a sales action, like purchasing our product? Many are engaged in Social Media Marketing, I thought, but few are engaged in the actual measurement of their Social Media Marketing ROI.
Blanchard makes some great points throughout the book, beginning with the title. Even if measurement of ROI is difficult, that's no excuse not to set up basic measurements for a Social Media Marketing campaign. Before / after is an obvious split - do we have more Twitter followers today, or more tomorrow after we honestly and eagerly create a Twitter marketing plan? URL click thru's is another - if we Tweet a URL, blog it, post it to our Facebook page - do people actually click thru. Bit.ly is a great free service for quick URL tracking. And, finally, if our ultimate goal is to sell something or drive registrations for a free consultation, webinar, or download - is our Social Media Marketing driving those conversions? Blanchard touches on all these topics, but doesn't provide a great framework for setting up measurement.
Ultimately, the book - despite its title - isn't really about ROI. It's more about weaving Social Media Marketing into your organization. That's really pre-ROI, if you think about it. And that, dear reader, brings us to the year of our Ford.
Social Media Marketing in the Year of Our Ford
In Huxley's famous dystopian novel, Brave New World, the future society is organized around principles of mass production, modeled very much after Henry Ford and the factory metaphor. Ford is so worshiped in the future society, that people speak of "our Ford" much as people today speak of "our Lord" or say "Jesus" when they just missed a close call in an automobile.
Blanchard, like so many in Social Media Marketing, worships at the feet of our Ford. Many of his examples, connections, reviews come from major companies - companies such as Ford. For example, on page 23, Blanchard discusses the head of Ford's Social Media strategy (Scott Monty) and how Ford reacted to the negative PR about the auto industry bail-out's. Ford wasn't a recipient, yet its brand was damaged, so Monty went into social media overdrive to address brand damage during the financial crisis. Is this important? Yes? Is it relevant to a small business? Not so much. Few of us have a brand as big and powerful as Ford, and few of us are ever even close to receiving Tarp money.
Why is this relevant? The issue is that the examples drawn in this book, plus in many others, draw on high profile names and brands (names and brands that help authors sell books, give books credibility by name-dropping...) but ultimately are not very relevant to small businesses.
Small businesses need social media advice on issues such as how to respond to a negative review on Yelp, how to get to the page 1 of a Google search using Google Places, how to get your products into Google Merchant Center, or the tricks and tips to success of review marketing on Amazon.com. In this, the book disappoints because it worships at the feet of our Ford.
Furthermore, much of the book is really addressed to large companies, with large teams, and large brand issues. Many chapters read at a very high level, executive discussion - when most small businesses need hands-on, direct advice on how to implement social media marketing. Is this bad? Not particularly. But if you are a small business struggling with social media marketing, much of this book is clearly not written for you. It's written for executives at multinational corporations such as Ford, not the mom-and-pop watch shop in New York City that needs to encourage Yelp reviews.
Back to ROI Measurement
Leaving aside the middle chapters, focused on more abstract, big company issues, Blanchard returns to the topic that best propels his book to your attention: ROI, and the measurement of social media marketing ROI. His high-level advice is very good for companies, big and small -

* Keep an eye on objectives and targets
* Monitor, measure, report.
* Maintain a list of everything you can measure.
* Maintain a list of everything you must measure.
* Test, measure, learn, adapt, repeat.
The final measurement chapters have great food-for-thought examples, such as connecting changes in sales performance with social media mentions. They lack a clear list of tools for measurement (especially free social media marketing tools), as well as a clear "to do" list that connects abstract concepts to practical measurement. That said, the ROI discussion is one of the first I have seen in a book, and therefore this book will stay on my Social Media Marketing bookshelf - as a remember to a) not worship at the feet of Ford, and b) measure everything!Social Media ROI: Managing and Measuring Social Media Efforts in Your Organization (Que Biz-Tech) Overview
