Sales Management ReviewCompanies of the old and new economies often suffer the same ailment: sales teams that don't produce. Writer Robert Calvin tells sales managers what they must do to cure this disease. Calvin's book ' which is as concise as an effective sales pitch ' gives you a thorough blueprint for building or rebuilding your sales team. The book is filled with questionnaires and lists, including a sample performance evaluation and a rundown on what not to say to a potential hire. Calvin argues that managers often neglect training, which alone should take up 40% of their time. We [...] highly recommend this potential Bible for sales managers, which makes it clear that you must be more critical of your sales force's achievements in areas such as prospecting, closing and even personal demeanor. A word of warning: Calvin is as ruthless as 'The Weakest Link' television show in asserting that poor performers must be eliminated' and he doesn't even wink.

Mike Webb's new book shows how to apply those same tools to sales and marketing, and help your organization vastly improve your productivity and results.
Sales are the lifeblood of any company, but most organizations still approach this discipline as though it were totally an art - with success depending on `born salespeople.' Webb takes the mystery out of the sales and marketing functions, and shows how they can be approached as a process - with input and outputs, causes and effects.
Perhaps Webb's breakthrough idea is the parallel between the manufacturing process and selling that then allows him to apply all the process tools that have help companies improve their production efficiency. As Webb notes: Advertising produces `leads', which are the equivalent of raw materials in manufacturing Sales people qualify those leads, moving them through the selling funnel, like `work in process.' Finally, sales closes `deals', with new customers equating to finished goods. With this insight, Webb then shows how to apply tools like Six Sigma to the selling process.
Another key idea is the concept of measuring marketing and selling effectiveness using the direct-response model. Direct marketing and telemarketing companies have been measuring effectiveness for decades - charting the response to each change in an ad or telescript with microscopic precision. By using this same model for general sales and marketing, companies can create tools and benchmarks to track their results at each step of the total sales process.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is responsible for selling or marketing - be they the VP of the department, the CFO hoping for better forecasting, or the CEO looking to gain higher margins while lower the total cost of sales. It will completely change the way you view sales and marketing, and helping you get a handle on sales process improvement.

No B.S. Business Success in The New Economy ReviewAs more and more of us leave our W2 jobs for the life of an entrepreneur, this book becomes a must read. This book is written in clear, straight forward, easy to read language which contributes to its "can't put it down appeal."
Using his experience in business combined with his marketing mastery, Dan Kennedy lays out philosophies and practices every entrepreneur should master. Kennedy first wrote this book in 1993, with an update completed in 2004. Today's changing economic conditions caused Kennedy to once again update the book for this 2010 edition.
What is interesting to note is that Kennedy has not needed to change any of the principles he believes make business success possible, principles he first laid out in the first 1993 edition. What he has changed in this edition is the tactics, strategies and applications he recommends entrepreneurs use today. These have all been updated to reflect operating conditions in what Kennedy calls today's new economy.
So, in this one book at a very reasonable price, you get:
*Dan Kennedy's business success principles
*Dan Kennedy's view of the new economy
*Dan Kennedy's suggestions for how to operate in today's new economy
*A look into Dan Kennedy's marketing mind and strategies

Don't Think Pink: What Really Makes Women Buy -- and How to Increase Your Share of This Crucial Market ReviewWomen are the most powerful consumer force in the U.S., but they do not approach buying decisions the way men do. That's intriguing, but it doesn't mean that exhaustive demographic and sales statistics make interesting reading. Authors and marketing consultants Lisa Johnson and Andrea Learned explain how to direct your marketing efforts to women. Each chapter deals with a different subset of women - old, young, black, white, Hispanic, married, single - but the groups are compared along similar lines and the information is sliced the same way in most chapters. The authors liven up their exposition with short illustrative case studies, but the cases often feature products for which marketers have made no concerted, specific effort to attract female buyers. For instance, the decision to sell single servings of food occurred because of other demographics (more people living alone) and was not intended just to attract women buyers. Still, the thesis here is important enough to carry the authors' occasional tendency to twist product features to fit the theme, as well as their branding jargon. Sales 2.0: Improve Business Results Using Innovative Sales Practices and Technology ReviewI disagree with most of the other reviewers in that I didn't find this book very good at all.
I stared to read the book hoping to find practical tips or valuable concepts on sales applicable in this new electronic age. I got very little of value.
Firstly, the whole concept of 2.0 used in this book as nothing more than a synonym for new. They might as well have called it New Sales, but probably wanting to sound trendy opted for 2.0 instead. The term 2.0 is overused as it is. Also, I conceive of it as at least related to user generated content or user interaction, something not referred to in the book.
Secondly, the sales 1.0 as presented in the book is a straw man. If we are to believe the authors of this book, sales before they came along consisted of people dropping by random companies to talk to random people in an attempt to sell them something. By contrast, the authors explain sales 2.0 involves innovative practices such as actually figuring out who to talk to. And then monitoring what works and what doesn't. Novel concepts indeed! I don't have a lot of sales experience, but I'm sure sales wasn't as primitive as the authors suggest.
Thirdly, the book contains very little practical advice at all.
Fourthly, the entire book presents a view on sales derived from very few cases, mainly Oracle. They present the theory and then illustrate the theory with examples from the cases, the same cases, over and over. The book would have worked a lot better if they would have described the Oracle case in detail and deduced theory from that, instead of the other way around.
Overall, very disappointing.

Pricing and Revenue Optimization ReviewPricing and Revenue Optimization fills the need for a rigorous yet accessible introduction to the field more commonly known as revenue management. The author presents key pricing decisions such as airline revenue management, markdown management, and customized pricing as constrained optimization problems. It is the only broadly accessible consistent treatment of these topics in one place. The intended audience is MBA and MS level students and managers with solid quantitative backgrounds. Linear programming, probabilistic modeling, and some calculus is used. This book neatly fills the space between the popular treatment in Cross's "Revenue Management" and the much more mathematical "Theory and Practice of Revenue Management" by Talluri and van Ryzin. The book is well written and presents plenty of real-world grounding as well as the necessary mathematics. It is written as a textbook but would also serve for any quantitatively-oriented analyst or manager wanting to know how math models can be used to improve pricing. As a textbook, it is a little short of problems and I would have liked to see chapters on forecasting and price-response estimation. It is the best available introduction to this important topic for the MBA-level student or practitioner.Pricing and Revenue Optimization Overview

The Marketing Gurus: Lessons from the Best Marketing Books of All Time ReviewI had to pick a book and write a review as part of an assignment of for may graduate marketing class. Having no marketing experience I took a shot in the dark and picked this book.
I am so glad I did. Although the authors of the original full-text versions would disagree, Mr. Murray "readers digest" summaries of the book were terrific. This book allowed me a great overview of 17 marketing books in one.
For someone new to marketing it was so quick and excellent reading to get me up to speed. You'll have to wait for a experienced marketing major for their judgment.
I felt it should be required reading for anyone who wants to know more about marketing but don't have the time to read all the full-text versions.

Velocity 2.0 ReviewWhether you are a dealer, work for a dealer or work for any company that operates in or around the world of used vehicle sales, do not start out 2010 without reading what Dale Pollak has to offer in Velocity 2.0.

The principles put forth are your best road map for navigating the intersection of the now-efficient used vehicle markets and the Internet. In reading each clearly presented section, you begin to understand that the principles are based on experience plus deep study and thought on the author's part.

Will your background, experience or current operating structure cause you to challenge some of what is put forth? Possibly, but you better have your data together. Dale has his concisely presented and gets across to the reader not only the "what" of velocity principles and how they work but the "why" . . . . then supports it all with real world examples of success. An add-on bonus for readers is the look into the author's "crystal ball" (Yes, I couldn't help but jump to that chapter). Just that glimpse into the future will reinforce why grasping the value of paint and pixel metrics is important to your business future.

How to Sell Anything on Amazon...and Make a Fortune ReviewI have been selling on Amazon for over four years, and I learned how to do everything as I went along. While I have been successful, some mistakes were made. Nothing serious, but there were a few instances of negative feedback and lost revenue that were a direct consequence of what I did wrong. Therefore, with my experience, there was very little in this book that was even slightly new to me.
However, if you are thinking about selling on Amazon or are just getting started, then this is a book that you should read. It will take you through all of the steps in getting an account started and explain how to manage your account. There are a large number of screenshots, so one can argue that the detail is too fine. I do not accept that argument, it is always better to include one shot too many than leave out one that could be critical to someone. I estimate that if I had read this book when I was just starting out selling on Amazon, I would have avoided mistakes that cost me in the neighborhood of $100 of lost revenue. Therefore, at a retail cost of $24.95, it would have returned the investment fourfold.
The advanced features of selling on Amazon are also covered. Starting and managing auctions, how to establish a zShop, marketing yourself on Amazon, paid placements, selling intellectual property, how to take advantage of Amazon's international sites and how to become an Amazon associate are all examined in sufficient detail. I liked this book. I'm not a fan of online retailing. But it can be done, and if a book does a reasonably good job introducing the reader to some good information on the subject, then I feel obligated to write a short review and post it on Amazon. This book is well written, well outlined & organized, and fills a void in the literature available on online retailing.
A few years ago I read and reviewed Unofficial Guide to Starting a Business Online (Unofficial Guides). I think I gave that book a 4-star as well. It did not fair as well with some other reviewers. But I think they were unjust. The instant book being reviewed probably could be called "Part II" of that book in my humble opinion. It adds information and updates information so the reader in 2009 is pretty informed on the topic of setting up a retail sales site or presence online today.
The Table of Contents (TOC) for this book is quite detailed. It will tell you exactly what is covered in this nice little book. I encourage you to take a look at the Search Inside feature Amazon offers for this book. It is there you can see the TOC for free.
