Web Analytics Demystified: A Marketer's Guide to Understanding How Your Web Site Affects Your Business ReviewI've read the 'classics' by Sterne and Inan, as well as some other good and bad books on web analytics, and this one is among the best.
What I especially like is the way each approach to analytics is thoroughly examined, and the strengths and weaknesses objectively discussed. Some books are dogmatic in their approach, locking the reader into the author's view of analytics. This one differs by giving readers enough information with examples, clearly articulated factors, and other identified best practices to accept compromise solutions based on budget, level of in-house expertise and other considerations.
Another aspect of this book is the way the author cuts through ambiguous terminology that is rampant in the web analytics discipline, which does demystify. The comprehensive discussion of tools, classified by type, is another area where this book shines. There is too much vendor hype that promotes fear, confusion and doubt, and this book cuts through the hype and uncovers what is and is not important, as well as sets realistic expectations.
Using the same comprehensive approach as in other parts of this book, the author covers metrics in great detail. This is, afterall, the essence of web analytics, and the thoroughness and scope of metrics make this book an invaluable resource.
If you need to learn web analytics, select tools to support it, or are a practicing web analytics analyst this book is one which should be on your desk - and given to other team members and stakeholders. It raises the bar in books on the subject and is destined to become a classic.Web Analytics Demystified: A Marketer's Guide to Understanding How Your Web Site Affects Your Business Overview

The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace ReviewI've always admired Gord Hotchkiss' ability to put into words things that I experience only as gut feelings. He did it again with this book. I've felt for a long time that B2B marketers are missing the boat when it comes to online marketing. This book crystalized why, while shattering many of the myths that are still accepted as conventional wisdom. After deconstructing how the buying process actually works from the buyer perspective, the discussion turns to a primer on the shift we're experiencing toward digital marketing and how to capitalize on it.
The book is based on a lot of quality research. As such, the conclusions have some heft. This is not one person's opinion about how to do things. It's a well-researched guidebook on how B2B buying actually works - and how to develop a B2B marketing approach that acknowledges this reality.
A smattering of topics covered:
- The myth of the buying funnel
- The critically important role that risk avoidance and emotional triggers play in buying decisions
- The different concerns of Doers (Influencers) vs. Buyers (decision makers) and how to ensure the needs of each are met
- The power of face-to-face (A compelling, if somewhat surprising, conclusion in a book about digital marketing)
- The role that online plays in buying decisions
- How a company's web site can be used as a force multiplier in the sales process
- How those who grew up with the Internet (Digital Natives) generally use technology differently than older people (Digital Immigrants), and the implications for marketers as the Digital Natives increasingly become the decision makers
On one hand, the book reads like a cautionary tale. A compelling case is made that those companies that miss the current shift to the digital marketplace are in for a bumpy ride. That may be frightening for some. On the other hand, the book also argues for taking a more personal and human-focused approach to marketing and communications in general. It's hard to be disturbed by that. In fact, I found it oddly comforting.
This book made me see the B2B market more clearly, gave me a framework to help understand it, allowed me to see things from the buyer's viewpoint (always valuable), and ultimately helped me to understand where things are headed in the not too distant future. I found it to be remarkably insightful and thoroughly enjoyable and therefore recommend it for any B2B marketer or student of human nature. The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace Overview

The On-Demand Brand: 10 Rules for Digital Marketing Success in an Anytime, Everywhere World ReviewWARNING! This book is for you if you're a smart, savvy business/marketing person. If not, you might be confused by the significance of its contribution.
In business, many of us feel like we're falling behind. We've tried to keep up with the latest device or digital channel only to wonder if it's helping our business. We've chased after all that's cool only to discover that our customers have moved on to something else. This is where Rick Matheison, author of The On-Demand Brand: 10 Rules for Digital Marketing Success in an Anytime, Everywhere World really shines. He says it's not about trying to keep up with the latest and greatest tool or social media outlet. You are not out of the loop simply because you don't understand everything digital yet, but you do need to have a philosophical framework for approaching any digital marketing intiative, whether it's using the channels we know and deal with today--mobine, Facebook, Twitter and so on--or channels five years from now that we haven't yet imagined.
Finally!! A book that shares with us the framework for figuring out what to do next!

Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Review
Obviously, it is highly desirable to measure what matters and that is especially true of marketing initiatives. Here's the challenge which many (most?) readers will face after they finish reading this volume: Which metrics are the most appropriate for their specific organization? Co-authors Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein offer 50+ and in an ideal business world, every executive can - and will - master all of them. That is possible but highly unlikely. Fortunately, the authors offer a wealth of information and observations that can guide and inform the selection of those metrics that will enable executives to "gather and analyze basic market data, measure the core factors that drive their business models, analyze the profitability of individual customer accounts, and optimize resource allocation among increasingly fragmented media.
To the authors' substantial credit, they make effective use of a number of reader-friendly devices which enliven what would be an otherwise dull textbook and they do without compromising the integrity of research-driven insights which so many books on marketing lack. These devices include definitions, formulas, and brief descriptions of various metrics. They also include within individual chapters several sections, such as "Construction" (e.g. metrics issues concerning their formulation, application, interpretation, and strategic ramifications), "Data Sources, "Complications, and Cautions" (i.e. an analysis of the limitations of the metrics under consideration, and their potential inadequacies once executed), and "Related Metrics and Concepts" (briefly surveyed). This is by no means an "easy read" but will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate rigor.
Although I believe this volume can be of substantial value to executives in almost all organizations (regardless of size or nature), I think it will be of greatest benefit to those - probably in larger companies -- who have an urgent need for accurate and consistent measurement of, for example, the dynamics behind their market share; the profitability of producing, pricing, selling, distributing, and servicing what they offer; and the ROI of marketing initiatives within the framework of enterprise financial metrics.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Ram Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't, Lynda Gratton's Hot Spots: Why Some Teams, Workplaces, and Organizations Buzz with Energy - And Others Don't, Robert J. Herbold's Seduced by Success: How the Best Companies Survive the 9 Traps of Winning, Jack Alexander's Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation, and Michael Useem's The Go Point: When It's Time to Decide--Knowing What to Do and When to Do It.Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Overview

Do It Wrong Quickly: How the Web Changes the Old Marketing Rules ReviewWho would have thought you'd ever hear an engineer encourage failure? Well, author, engineer and IBMer, Mike Moran does in his new book.
This book does more than make the case for a more nimble and carefree attitude. In today's supercharged marketplace, especially on the web, marketers cannot afford to wait for perfect. They need to track and react to the consumers quickly and adjust as they go.
Moran encourages listening and watching consumers and taking their lead. The book is an easy read, broken into manageable chunks of information. The best part, in my opinion, is the third section. Moran offers not only encouragement but suggestions on how to bring this new way of thinking into a corporate climate.
Well worth the time and money. I can't imagine you could read this book and not do a few things better, smarter and more profitably.

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More ReviewWell, timing is everything... and isn't always fair. Had I not just completed reading Jeffrey & Bryan Eisenberg's "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark?" before picking up "The Long Tail," I would probably have given this book 4 stars.
Chris Anderson has done a very good job of showing us the new "economics of abundance," or the connection of supply and demand thru technology and the Internet.
Question: What happens when everything in the world becomes available to everyone?
Answer: A market that never dies... markets for every niche, and vice-versa.
The Long Tail.
Using corporate examples like Google, eBay, iTunes and Netflix, Anderson lends an interesting perspective on how these companies have grabbed the Long Tail theory (consciously or unconsciously) and used it as the foundation for their staggering success. For customers of these companies, being online means unlimited "shelf space" - access to hundreds of thousands of bits of information, products and services they'd never been exposed to otherwise.
But how does the ordinary businessperson experience the success of the eBays of the world? Here, Anderson falls short. He states his "secret" to The Long Tail:
1.Make everything available
2.Help me find it
It's the "help me find it" part that Anderson ignores. In fact, it's the end of the book... you're left hanging, thinking, "So how in hell am I supposed to help people find me?"
Taken for what it is - a good presentation of a present-day theory (and one that was adequately covered in the original article in Wired magazine), the book is fine. But to really understand what it takes to make the Long Tail theory work for you, you must get a copy of "Waiting for Your Cat to Bark." It's in-depth coverage on not only how our economy works today, but understanding how people buy, how to understand what they're looking for and what you need to do to create persuasion magic not only on your website but in all your marketing materials.
This is not a time for "build it and they will come." Understanding an economy is only the first step. The real question is - what are you going to do about it to make yourself an integral part of the Long Tail?
It's too bad "The Long Tail" and "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark" can't be sold in a box set - they were made for each other. The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More Overview

Connecting With Consumers: Marketing For New Marketplace Realities ReviewWhile replowing much of the same landscape as other social media marketing guides, this academic treatise offers two appealing, redeeming features: numerous fresh examples of campaigns which illustrate specific tactics and, for the academically inclined, an extensive bibliography of market research papers and articles. Professor of marketing Allan J. Kimmel focuses on how new media change the practice of marketing, but his presentation suffers from repetition and overuse of labels and diagrams. Perhaps this is the byproduct of the deluge of marketing research and new theories that drive the advertising business. getAbstract recommends this well-researched book to research-driven marketers, academics and marketing researchers.Connecting With Consumers: Marketing For New Marketplace Realities Overview

Managing Electronic Media: Making, Marketing, and Moving Digital Content ReviewElectronic media content, in various forms, is becoming increasingly important in the world today. Whether you are in management, distribution, production or the creative side, Focal Press' "Managing Electronic Media" by Joan Van Tassel& Lisa Poe-Howfield is well worth the read. The text is dense, and is what you would expect from a college textbook. Indeed, at the end of each chapter there are exercises and assignments as well as resource rich footnotes for the student or manager who wants to dig more in depth of any section.
The information is far from dry, it gives recent examples and the numbers cited are current. Electronic forms of media is one area of the American economy that is growing, the greater questions come about distribution channels and this book examines them in the kind of detail that readers have come to expect from Focal Press.Managing Electronic Media: Making, Marketing, and Moving Digital Content Overview

Real-Time Marketing for Business Growth: How to Use Social Media, Measure Marketing, and Create a Culture of Execution ReviewI was looking for a marketing book that would help me reinvent marketing and sales strategies for our organization. I already knew a lot of the basics and was looking for a fresh approach that would help us compete more effectively since our market has changed considerably over the past couple of years. I also needed a book that would guide me through the social media jungle to figure out where I should focus time and money to get the most for our investment. I was not only impressed with the social media advice and recommendations (there is a whole social media strategy and planning guide section) but the entire marketing process that is described as a six step process called PRAISE which stands for Purpose, Research, Analyze, Strategize, Implement, Evaluate and Execute. I think most people (like me) want to go right to lead generation programs like direct mail, email marketing, internet advertising, etc. What I learned from this book was how to create better strategies that would help us find new customers and new markets for our services. By understanding how to make our customer's experiences more valuable and our services stand out from all our competitors, it was so much easier to develop a plan for the marketing tactics we should use. I also learned several ways to measure our marketing that were new ideas and methods I hadn't heard of before.
A nice bonus of this book is all the ideas about company culture and how to use culture as part of your marketing strategy. We already have a great company culture but I never really thought about how it was connected to marketing. The information presented on this topic alone is well worth the price of the book. The 10 Culture Rules at the end of the book is full of ideas that wil benefit not only employees but customers as well. Lots of substance in this book.

Outcome-Based Marketing New Rules for Marketing on the Web ReviewJohn is one of the most savvy marketers I know. His sage advice is field focused and road tested. He's been in the trenches of both technical marketing as well as years of helping small business find the on-ramp to using the Internet to gain visibility for their brand and products.
The approach of this book is comprehensive yet modular -- you don't have to read through the whole book to begin to get value from what you've learned from each section. John breaks it out into easy-to-consume "chunks" that teach you not only the concepts of Internet marketing, but also the principles of why you do these things. Then he takes you through the how of implementing. The book is particularly well arranged with helpful navigational tools to let you know where you are and summary comments at the end of each section to reinforce what you've learned.
Starting with strategic thinking, he outlines the tactical action items necessary to reach the goals that a company has set. He addresses the different roles in an organization, and how each one manages or contributes to the marketing effort.
But the big payoff is how John explains the use of the major social platforms. He discusses the "rules of the road" for each of them -- LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter... even Foursquare -- how each is unique, addressing different user populations, use cases, and target audiences. He separates the fact from the fad. And he keeps you out of trouble by explaining the special "Netiquette" of each.
John's particular expertise is SEO, Search Engine Optimization, and I know of no one who is better at doing it. He's been helping companies for years raise their visibility on the Internet, and getting them the most bang for the buck from their web advertising dollar.
This is a uniquely valuable book for any company to either start their online marketing efforts, or to a help a company that is already "on line" to step up their game to leverage latest social networks and platforms to expand their web presence.

The Complete Guide to Writing Web-Based Advertising Copy to Get the Sale: What You Need to Know Explained Simply ReviewVickie Taylor emphasizes repeatedly in her book "The Complete Guide to Writing Web-based Advertising Copy to get the Sale: Everything you Need to Know Explained Simply," that the keys to writing effective web-based advertising copy are brevity and clarity.
She provides the role model for her recommended approach in this "How to Guide" geared towards freelance copywriters and business owners. Taylor writes in a straightforward and conversational style that is both concise and informative.
Her purpose is to provide suggestions and advice on basic design guidelines for improving copy appearance and developing quality web content so one can increase sales, and she does so in a clear, efficient manner.
Taylor shares tricks of the copywriting trade from successful professionals in the business, which provide not only real-world examples, but practical advice and tips from experts who have been through the growing pains and know what works and what doesn't.
However, Taylor doesn't sugarcoat the copywriting business and is up front with her readers concerning its challenges. "The creative world of advertising is tough stuff," Taylor writes, which she follows later with, "writing copy is not as easy as it may seem."
You can tell from the myriad quotes she incorporates into her work from other literary minds that Taylor has a writer's sensibility: her wide-ranging references to authors include Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Truman Capote, Sun Tzu, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Johnson and others.
She dispenses good advice throughout, emphasizing a diverse background and diverse experiences to help inform copywriting and reminding copywriting novices that being effective ("words drive the sale") is more important than being creative.
Taylor includes helpful sections such as a "Day in the Life," a contrived, but pragmatic scenario where you imagine a day in the life of a typical consumer in your target market so you can learn how they operate and how to best reach them.
Also useful is a sample creative brief she develops for a fictional company called "Guac-n-Rock" guacamole which presents a relevant example to business owners seeking to reach their target audience.
Although her focus is writing advertising copy for Internet media, she explains how to write for different types of media and various types of ad web copy such as e-mail marketing.
Taylor even includes a section on blogging and new media that describes how incorporating blogs into a business allows you to have an interactive site that connects with consumers on a more personal level.
While the book does contain some extraneous material (the section on "Creative Aerobics" can probably be jettisoned) her overall message is consistent and novice copywriters or small business owners should find it valuable.

Facebook Marketing: Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Business Review
I liked this book. I thought it was well written and well outlined. I'm not sure I would have included on the cover the following: "Leverage social media to grow your business." But the book provides a "rough guide" to Facebook. And I think it does a pretty good job.
Over the past year some leaders in the social media marketing realm have been materializing. Besides blogs of all kinds, it seems fair to me to say these leaders include MySpace, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook. I've read and reviewed the following books on some of these platforms:
YouTube for Business (ISBN: 9780789737977)
The Rough Guide to MySpace (ISBN: 9781843538424)
Amp Your MySpace Page (ISBN: 9780071490726)
I'm on LinkedIn, Now What? (ISBN: 9781600050695)
Until I read the instant book being reviewed I had not read any on Facebook. I am aware of "I'm on Facebook, Now What?" (ISBN: 9781600050954). But I haven't seen or read it. If it is anything like the book its author wrote on LinkedIn, then it is probably a good book. However, I think "Facebook Marketing" does a better job covering Facebook than the LinkedIn book did regarding LinkedIn.
This book is NOT about social media marketing per se. It is not going to tell you how to leverage social media in order to grow your business. You will have to read other books on that subject. And the coverage on that topic is expanding and changing as I write this review. What this book is about is the Facebook platform that can be used as a marketer's tool when practicing social media marketing. It tells us about User Profiles, Facebook Groups, how to create Web pages within Facebook, hosting events on Facebook, and other things that one can take advantage of at Facebook.
It's the "other things" that take up half the book that may be nice to know about. But I doubt they are practical for growing a business. But the first half of the book is worth its weight in gold for anyone who wants to use Facebook in a big way to practice social media marketing. 5 stars!
PS. Examine the Search Inside feature offered by Amazon on this book. It provides a detailed Table of Contents for you to examine and see for yourself what is included in this book.Facebook Marketing: Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Business Overview

Author First Aid Kit: Creating Multiple Streams of Income with Information Products ReviewThis book gives solid strategies and tactics. While I knew about a few ways to turn my ideas into products, this book really helped open my eyes to the bigger picture and all the options available. I especially liked their 3 Tiered Wealth Generation Pyramid model that did a great job explaining how to structure my offerings. It made me completely revise my approach. Their exercises and worksheets were also very helpful in helping me refine my strategies.
It's a very quick read and densely packed with good info to get you thinking bigger about the possibilities for your intellectual property.Author First Aid Kit: Creating Multiple Streams of Income with Information Products Overview

Marketing Accountability: A New Metrics Model to Measure Marketing Effectiveness ReviewForget the past; marketing managers are now accountable for the financial and sales results they achieve with the money they spend. They can claim - with the backing of some marketing professors - that too many factors in the sales and marketing orbit are out of their control: the economy, fickle consumers, onerous competition, balky delivery problems, murky customer service, and so on. True, all of these real-life happenstances can undermine clever ads and promotions. Even so, corporate executives are no longer willing to give marketing a pass on accountability. Professor Malcolm McDonald and marketing measurement expert Peter Mouncey offer a useful solution: a layered evaluation system that firms can apply to align their marketing activities with their strategies and financial results. The authors provide metrics and tactics marketers can rely on to substantiate the impact of their work. The book is pretty technical, but its clear, two-color layout helps make its charts and graphs more accessible. getAbstract recommends it most warmly to marketers who already have some analytical expertise.Marketing Accountability: A New Metrics Model to Measure Marketing Effectiveness Overview

Marketing Plans for Services: A Complete Guide ReviewMarketing Plans for Services: A Complete Guide
By: Adrian Payne, Malcolm McDonald, Pennie Frow
Authors and experts in their field, Adrian Payne, Malcolm McDonald and Pennie Frow set out to teach how to create a competitive advantage through the use of marketing plans for service businesses and other service organisations. In this complete guide, they focus on how marketing plans should be developed, the planning process, theory, techniques and research and how businesses can use a new approach with this unique step-by-step teaching system. Marketing plans are not a once-a-year issue and there is a difference between operational and strategic plans!
In each chapter they highlight the difference between the "process" of marketing planning and the "output" of this process with clear objectives and examples, which are both detailed and easy to understand. Also included are the inevitable glossary of terms, references and index you get with books of this size. And at 495 pages long it's a chunky marketeer's buddy with more expert advice than you can shake a stick at. I loved it.
There's no hiding the fact that marketing plans are a challenge, yet they are proven to increase your success rate and produce a higher ROI, whilst minimising the unexpected and conflicts, purely because one is forced to think ahead and work out exactly what is needed within a certain time frame and hence spot possible problems before they arise. Besides, any marketing plan you make is always going to give you a marked improvement over no plan at all, and with these authors' tried and tested methods at hand failure is not an option!Marketing Plans for Services: A Complete Guide Overview

YouTube For Dummies ReviewI'm currently using this book to become more adept with YouTube and it is very informative and, as with most of the Dummies books,is well laid out. However this book was written in 2007 and four years, in the computer world, is an eternity. As a result, some parts of the book can be a bit confusing as it won't match up with the current version of YouTube. The first time I realized this problem was using the chapter on groups to try to use that feature. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't find the parts of the web page being referred to until I did a Google search on 'YouTube Groups" and found posts discussing their elimination from the web site last year. That's the better part of a whole chapter discussing a feature that no longer exists. How to use groups is again discussed in a later chapter and I have also run into some instances where the interface has been streamlined so it no longer matches up with instructions and illustrations in the book. That's why I give the book only four out of five stars. It's because about 20 percent needs to be updated.YouTube For Dummies Overview
