The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace ReviewI've always admired Gord Hotchkiss' ability to put into words things that I experience only as gut feelings. He did it again with this book. I've felt for a long time that B2B marketers are missing the boat when it comes to online marketing. This book crystalized why, while shattering many of the myths that are still accepted as conventional wisdom. After deconstructing how the buying process actually works from the buyer perspective, the discussion turns to a primer on the shift we're experiencing toward digital marketing and how to capitalize on it.
The book is based on a lot of quality research. As such, the conclusions have some heft. This is not one person's opinion about how to do things. It's a well-researched guidebook on how B2B buying actually works - and how to develop a B2B marketing approach that acknowledges this reality.
A smattering of topics covered:
- The myth of the buying funnel
- The critically important role that risk avoidance and emotional triggers play in buying decisions
- The different concerns of Doers (Influencers) vs. Buyers (decision makers) and how to ensure the needs of each are met
- The power of face-to-face (A compelling, if somewhat surprising, conclusion in a book about digital marketing)
- The role that online plays in buying decisions
- How a company's web site can be used as a force multiplier in the sales process
- How those who grew up with the Internet (Digital Natives) generally use technology differently than older people (Digital Immigrants), and the implications for marketers as the Digital Natives increasingly become the decision makers
On one hand, the book reads like a cautionary tale. A compelling case is made that those companies that miss the current shift to the digital marketplace are in for a bumpy ride. That may be frightening for some. On the other hand, the book also argues for taking a more personal and human-focused approach to marketing and communications in general. It's hard to be disturbed by that. In fact, I found it oddly comforting.
This book made me see the B2B market more clearly, gave me a framework to help understand it, allowed me to see things from the buyer's viewpoint (always valuable), and ultimately helped me to understand where things are headed in the not too distant future. I found it to be remarkably insightful and thoroughly enjoyable and therefore recommend it for any B2B marketer or student of human nature.The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Search Engine Optimization ReviewAt the behest of one of my colleagues, I begrudgingly borrowed this book in preparation to optimize my website. I have an aversion to books in the IDIOTS and DUMMIES series and generally opt for more dignified book titles. However, as I got into this book, I was delighted to discover the breathtakingly simple and well organized presentation style of Michael Miller. I easily grasped the key concepts in the book without my eyes growing crossed. This book was BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who needs to learn about SEO, PPC, and other web management metrics. It takes a very dedicated reader to get through the hundreds of pages. I'd give it 5 stars if it was consolidated a bit more so pages and information could be gleaned faster. The Truth About Search Engine Optimization ReviewAs most people searching for SEO books, I was looking for the most up-to-date book possible. Even though this book claims to be 1st printed Feb 2009 the text references outdated "current events." Refers a few times to the "new" Indiana Jones movie and news about George W. Bush. Also refers to "Macromedia" Flash, but I think that was just a lack of software knowledge.
Don't get me wrong I learned a lot... A LOT!, but I question if some of this content is already outdated. Algorithms are always changing.The Truth About Search Engine Optimization Overview

Internet Marketing From The Real Experts ReviewTo me, this book presented itself as a collection of articles (poorly edited in some respects) about affiliate marketing for the most part.
The title should have been "Affiliate Marketing From The Real Experts".
The book is an easy read, as most of the articles are pretty short in nature, covering a wide variety of topics...but none in depth. If you're getting started in affiliate marketing, this might be a good "primer" of sorts...but as a resource you'll constantly refer to, in my opinion this book gets low marks.Internet Marketing From The Real Experts Overview

Cult of Analytics: Driving online marketing strategies using web analytics (Emarketing Essentials) ReviewYes this is true, people seem so much fascinated about the tools these days. If you have one of the strong performing analytics tools like Omniture, Coremetrics, WebTrends, Google Analytics, etc you feel happy and contended that you are moving in the right direction but this is just a hallucination. And you know that at every month end when you send the excel report of your KPI's to the stakeholders and it just goes unnoticed as they don't know what to do.
Once you read this book, understand what is being told here, I bet you would know exactly what you have to do with those tools that puke data. The author has stressed on the entire process of Web Analytics which includes advance level understanding of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), Benchmarking and even how to make your organization Web Analytics friendly.
I loved the How to Develop KPIs chapter. I read it twice - thrice, though mine is just a lead generation website but for me the Micro Level KPIs formulas were helpful. Second most important thing is the REAN model on which the author has stressed. I tried to ignore it at first thinking that its just another technical term to get famous but it turned out that if I think and plan according to the REAN model, the understanding and implementation becomes very easy of KPI's, reporting, Dashboard creation and other things. But this is a secret which I am not going to disclose to anyone in my organization because it simplifies things too much.
In all ... implementing the high end tool is of no use if at the end of the month you do not have any thing to action upon. In order to understand the actionable elements you need to get deeper (both Macro and Micro level) of your KPIs. If you believe Avinash Kaushik's 90 / 10 rule then this book is to help you in the 90 part.

For instant, she starts talking about Google Trends and doesn't tell us where to find it online (I guess there's Google for that ;). That said, there are a lot of good gems she shares. Here are some:
-Searchers click on organic results 85% of the time
-Companies connect with searches in two ways: Paid and Organic
-Longer search queries = fewer paid results appearing to the searcher
-Videos and images draw users away from the paid search column
-50% of searchers will see the 7th search result
-100% of searchers look at the first organic result; 50% look at the first paid result
-Increased organic results = increased brand awareness
-organic results last over time, whereas paid results stop the second you stop paying for them
-Searchers click on a brand 92% of the time when a brand is in both paid and organic results
-A search is on avg. three words long; nearly 25% are only one word
-Women are more deliberate in reading search results
-A #1 ranking is less important than people think. If you rank in the top 3 to 4 results and have a more compelling title and description, you may own the click
-Searchers don't even look at the entire title. They look at the left half of it
-Remember that every page of your site is a potential entry for visitors
-The days of normal search results that everyone sees the same are now over
-YouTube is the second largest search engine
