Web Analytics Demystified: A Marketer's Guide to Understanding How Your Web Site Affects Your Business ReviewI've read the 'classics' by Sterne and Inan, as well as some other good and bad books on web analytics, and this one is among the best.
What I especially like is the way each approach to analytics is thoroughly examined, and the strengths and weaknesses objectively discussed. Some books are dogmatic in their approach, locking the reader into the author's view of analytics. This one differs by giving readers enough information with examples, clearly articulated factors, and other identified best practices to accept compromise solutions based on budget, level of in-house expertise and other considerations.
Another aspect of this book is the way the author cuts through ambiguous terminology that is rampant in the web analytics discipline, which does demystify. The comprehensive discussion of tools, classified by type, is another area where this book shines. There is too much vendor hype that promotes fear, confusion and doubt, and this book cuts through the hype and uncovers what is and is not important, as well as sets realistic expectations.
Using the same comprehensive approach as in other parts of this book, the author covers metrics in great detail. This is, afterall, the essence of web analytics, and the thoroughness and scope of metrics make this book an invaluable resource.
If you need to learn web analytics, select tools to support it, or are a practicing web analytics analyst this book is one which should be on your desk - and given to other team members and stakeholders. It raises the bar in books on the subject and is destined to become a classic.Web Analytics Demystified: A Marketer's Guide to Understanding How Your Web Site Affects Your Business Overview

Beyond e-Government & e-Democracy: A Global Perspective ReviewThis book is a collection of articles discussing different aspects of e-government and e-democracy. Topics include:
- The need for more community infrastructure in the form of high-speed internet connectivity to make e-government successful
- The need for government and political backing to make e-democracy successful
- Examples of where e-government has been successful
Here are some of my thoughts on the articles:
-I found that a lot of the articles on the need for greater interconnectivity were repetitious. The information was valuable, but after two or three articles, it became boring.
-The writing in this book is filled with technical jargon and is typical of papers written for conferences, so it was not always easy to follow.
-There were several case studies of implementing e-government, and while they were interesting, I don't believe the information is easily extended to other cities and other situations.
-There is one very good case study of New Orleans which I think does a good job of describing features of e-democracy.
Overall, the book has some useful information, but count on a lot of it to be repetitive.

Techno-Ready Marketing : How and Why Your Customers Adopt Technology ReviewEvery once in a while a book comes along that not only sets a new standard of excellence in its field, it actually adds a new dimension to the field itself. The outcome of years of technical research and of knowledge derived from actual hands-on ventures, "Techno-Ready Marketing" sets the pace for the marketing of technical products in the 21st century and beyond.
Colby and Parasuraman intrigue the reader with the various levels of technologically ready personalities ranging from the ever-curious "Pioneer" to the overly cautious "Laggard". The authors then go on to show how, once a target market is identified, guidelines can be established and followed to make the release of new technologies successful.
"Techno-Ready Marketing" will be remembered for generations to come as the book that opened the door to the dynamic concept of Technology Readiness. Future generations will read this book in awe of the foresight and keen perception of the authors. There is little doubt that "Techno-Read Marketing" will retain its position as one of the foremost works of its kind.Techno-Ready Marketing : How and Why Your Customers Adopt Technology Overview

Economic Development Online ReviewAs a follow up to Economic Development Marketing, Ubalde clearly explains and offers solutions for the different types of online tools economic developers can use to transform a region. Through charts, graphs, stories and screen shots, the book outlines how ED professionals can implement new technologies their private sector customers are using such as Yelp, Four Square, cloud computing, SEO, SEM, SMO, Twitter, to leverage results and gain credibility in the complex and competitive industry.

For example, Ubalde says the implementation of ED strategy should be distributed to a much larger legion of voices and partners that can share, forward, tweet, like and communicate your message.
The days of a select few groupthinkers setting traditional regional economic policy is behind us. The present and future of economic development is empowering individuals in your offline community - who have a presence in these online communities - to share and implement your vision.
ED professionals would be operating irresponsibly by not becoming a user, student and expert of the book's content. Further, creative leaders who set regional economic development strategy would be wise to align with Ubalde's organization - ZoomPropsector.com.

Beginning Ajax (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book is really disappointing. The code examples are not at all well suited for the book's supposed target (starting level).
The first example (page 21) is too complex for a beginners' book *and* for a first chapter... and they even say so! (Quote: "Note that this example is quite complex.") I wonder, if they knew it was too complex to grasp at a first glance, why didn't they change it? They introduce even XSL without any need -this can only discourage a beginner. Believe me, I can think of a thousand better examples, and I'm not an expert in Ajax.
It doesn't get any better in the next chapters. The authors can't manage to explain fundamental things like the XMLHttpRequest object, which is an essential part of Ajax, and consequently should be an essential part of a book about Ajax for beginners.
So... I really don't recommend this book. I usually enjoy Wrox books, but I have to say this title is absolutely not worth the money. If you are a beginner, try Wiley's Ajax for Dummies instead. Hope this helps!Beginning Ajax (Programmer to Programmer) Overview

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More ReviewWell, timing is everything... and isn't always fair. Had I not just completed reading Jeffrey & Bryan Eisenberg's "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark?" before picking up "The Long Tail," I would probably have given this book 4 stars.
Chris Anderson has done a very good job of showing us the new "economics of abundance," or the connection of supply and demand thru technology and the Internet.
Question: What happens when everything in the world becomes available to everyone?
Answer: A market that never dies... markets for every niche, and vice-versa.
The Long Tail.
Using corporate examples like Google, eBay, iTunes and Netflix, Anderson lends an interesting perspective on how these companies have grabbed the Long Tail theory (consciously or unconsciously) and used it as the foundation for their staggering success. For customers of these companies, being online means unlimited "shelf space" - access to hundreds of thousands of bits of information, products and services they'd never been exposed to otherwise.
But how does the ordinary businessperson experience the success of the eBays of the world? Here, Anderson falls short. He states his "secret" to The Long Tail:
1.Make everything available
2.Help me find it
It's the "help me find it" part that Anderson ignores. In fact, it's the end of the book... you're left hanging, thinking, "So how in hell am I supposed to help people find me?"
Taken for what it is - a good presentation of a present-day theory (and one that was adequately covered in the original article in Wired magazine), the book is fine. But to really understand what it takes to make the Long Tail theory work for you, you must get a copy of "Waiting for Your Cat to Bark." It's in-depth coverage on not only how our economy works today, but understanding how people buy, how to understand what they're looking for and what you need to do to create persuasion magic not only on your website but in all your marketing materials.
This is not a time for "build it and they will come." Understanding an economy is only the first step. The real question is - what are you going to do about it to make yourself an integral part of the Long Tail?
It's too bad "The Long Tail" and "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark" can't be sold in a box set - they were made for each other. The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More Overview

IRC Hacks Review'IRC Hacks' is not a more recent version of Alex Charalabidis's 'The Book of IRC.' Published by No Starch Press in 2000, 'The Book of IRC' focuses on more introductory material, and thoroughly covers the issues facing most IRC users. Unlike the older No Starch book, 'IRC Hacks' devotes over 200 pages to bot development. In other words, the 'IRC Hacks' authors concentrate on more advanced ways to interact with IRC servers. If this is your primary interest, you will enjoy 'IRC Hacks.'
Since I am not interested in bot development, 'IRC Hacks' wasn't as useful to me as I had hoped. I enjoyed on chapters discussing the IRC protocol (ch. 13) and setting up an IRC server (ch. 15). Hacks about NickServ (#8) and ChanServ (#9) were interesting, and I may try the CtrlProxy hack (#93) to facilitate remote IRC access.
'IRC Hacks' is fairly well written, although the editor should have ensured that terms were explained when first mentioned. For example, CTCP appears on pages 10 and 48, with no expansion of the acronym or reference to hack #85 (which explains CTCP). This is often a problem with books by teams of contributors. I would have enjoyed more coverage of 'operational issues,' like problems associated with running an IRC server. IRC networks have been targets of denial of service attacks and other adversarial activity for years, and the means by which IRC operators defend themselves would make good reading.
If you need a book focused on bot development, give 'IRC Hacks' a try. If you're more interested in IRC as a user, or even as an operator, ask Alex Charalabidis to write a second edition of 'The Book of IRC.'IRC Hacks Overview

eBay PowerSeller Million Dollar Ideas: Innovative Ways to Make Your eBay Sales Soar ReviewI've been waiting for this book for SIX months!
If you read the first book by Brad and Debra Schepp (eBay Power Seller Secrets) You'll love this book, if you didn't read the first book, eBay Powerseller Secrets, I highly advise that you buy both! Brad and Debra Schepp write with an easy to read style. I feel these two books have more value than the other 40 eBay and ecommerce books I have on my shelf. I like the fact that this book delves deeper into the culture of eBay sellers than most other eBay books.
You won't find anything about the SYI form or how to list your item. This book is far more advanced and gives you insight into who the successful PowerSellers are on eBay and why, it may as well be the who's who of eBay PowerSellers. Brad and Debra are associate members of the Professional eBay Seller's Alliance, they seem to have the inside track on everything eBay. They even write for the auction industry news authority Auctionbytes.
Unlike other authors that pretend to be experienced eBay experts, Brad and Debra don't, they bring you the stories and facts from the experts in a far more valuable format that reads more like entertainment than a boring business instruction book. I do advise that when you sit down to read this book to have highlighter or sticky notes handy, the concepts fly at you and you can't put this book down, do yourself a favor and mark the spots when you have those million dollar AHA moments while reading. Instead of getting the perspective of just an author, Brad and Debra bring you the perspectives of many different sellers. Brad and Debra put some soul and personality into the book bringing wisdom from what appears to be over 100 of the top sellers on eBay.
They touch quite a few topics that are near and dear to my heart.
How to find products (the simple and cheap way)
Multi Channel Sales (Our New Mantra)
The future of listing enhancements (Free pictures, audio and even video)
Google Adwords, Froogle and Gbase.
Your eBay community and interaction with it. (Sharing with others produces returns)
Bonus section (Top 500 sellers and the top 200 fastest growing sellers on eBay)
Brad and Deb's first book eBay Powerseller Secrets:Insider Tips from eBay's Most Successful Sellers encouraged me to start my own me page and helped develop processes that I use today. They are solid no bull writers that practice what they preach, I'm sure if they wanted to , with all the information they have gathered, they could be one of the top ten sellers on eBay, but you can definitely tell when reading their books that their passion is writing about eBay and technology, they capture the soul of eBay and bind it for you. If I could only have one eBay book, this would be it.

Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age ReviewDon't let the (literally) clueless title turn you off. This is an impressive tour de force. The first half is a concise, entertaining, and enormously informative history of technology and its effects on our social customs and ways of looking at the world. Lane's grasp of mountains of material and his ability to concisely summarize it are awesome. Since I am in a related field, I intended to skim it, but was drawn into reading every word. The second half is more specialized, but is only tangentially devoted to "obscene profits" (that awful title looks like a publicists's handiwork). It poignantly conveys the ways the new technology reveals for the first time that men's obsession with pornography is of epidemic proportions.Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age Overview

Windows Vista: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning ReviewI am an author of technical books myself, having written five up to this point. I can tell that this author put in the time and effort to create an excellent reference that really covers what you'll really use in the operating system. The "Information Kiosks" are superb. You can really go through the book quickly - reading just the Kiosks - and get a lot of value right away. The shortcut key for accessing the traditional File, View, Edit, etc. menus in the Information Kiosk on page 90 was worth the price of the book to me. I didn't know that one and I pride myself on knowing valuable keyboard shortcuts (sorry, I'm an old DOS geek).
The "Street Jargon" sections at the end of each chapter should probably be read first - just my suggestion. This section defines new terms introduced in the chapter and knowing their definitions in advance will be very helpful. I'm sure the author would have placed them at the beginning given a choice, but this series by Wiley already has the structure fixed in place.
The section on Networking with Windows Vista (pages 325 to 335) provide an excellent, to-the-point understanding of how to configure a wireless or wired connection. No fluff, just the steps.
I used Chapter 9 to learn how to use the non-technical features of Vista like photo editing and the photo gallery. Us Information Technology people tend to learn about the "under-the-hood" features and not spend the time discovering these great tools. Actually, this book is aimed more at a Vista user than a Vista support professions, but it is filled with vast amounts of information for the support professional too. Trust me, your users will want to know the great shortcuts provided in this book.
I could go on-and-on about what I like in this book, but suffice it to say: I feel that, if you don't read this book, you don't know everything you need to know about Windows Vista.
Have a great summer everyone. - Tom Carpenter - Author: Wireless#, CWNA, CWSP and 70-431 Study GuidesWindows Vista: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning Overview

Linux Toys II: 9 Cool New Projects for Home, Office, and Entertainment (ExtremeTech) ReviewChris Negus is an excellent writer and one of the most knowledgeable Linux people to be found. He wrote "Linux Toys" in 2003 and he is the first to admit that it is now completely outmoded. "Linux Toys II" was published in 2005 and in only four years, it is showing its age. A testament to the rapidly evolving Linux and electronics worlds to be sure, but something of a disappointment to anyone hoping to expand their knowledge of Linux through the creation of practical projects.
The projects didn't require any great smarts to begin with: all the software needed was provided on the DV bound with the book.
Additional hardware was required for some of the projects and it is a pleasant surprise to how the prices of components have declined. For example, "Creating a Personal Video Recorder with Myth TV" was projected to cost $943. Today with a much more powerful CPU and bigger hard drives, the project would cost substantially less. But the reality is that MythTV is a far less appealing project today than it was yesterday because DVRs have become so commonplace. Also, the MythTV software has changed considerably.
The "Customizing A Live Linux Pen Drive" project was reasonably applicable in 2005. Today, directions for doing this project are everywhere and the process itself has become simplified as more publishers have adapted their software to flash drive.
Other projects such as setting up an Internet Radio Station and controlling X10 devices would have little appeal to most people.
Like I said, Chris Negus is an excellent writer, so there is something that can be learned from this book currently - but there is nothing here that can't be found in other books or on the web. I bought a used copy for a few dollars on Amazon, so I don't feel like I've wasted money. Still, having breezed through the book once, I don't think I'll be reading it again.

Mediamorphosis: Understanding New Media (Journalism and Communication for a New Century Ser) Review"Mediamorphosis" by Roger Fidler is a breath-taking, sweeping overview of communications technologies and their impact on the media through the millenia and in the years to come. The treatment is academic and scholarly, with numerous case studies of the interaction between various media forms. Major principles guiding the evolution and evaluation of media technologies are illustrated.
Ten chapters cover a wide range of issues including media evolution and convergence, media traits, digital technologies, Internet publishing, socio-political forces of control, new media experiments, virtual reality, user interactivity, and future trends. A list of acronyms and abbreviations is also included. Cited works feature "InfoCulture" by Steven Lubar, "The Story of Language" by Mario Pei, "Brainframes" by Derrick de Kerckhove, "The Control Revolution" by James Beniger, and "The Gutenberg Elegies" by Sven Birkerts.
Roger Fidler (rfidler@saed.kent.edu) is a well-known electronic publishing visionary and practitioner. He has worked in the newspaper business for more than 34 years. He was the director of the Knight-Ridder Information Design Laboratory, founder of the PressLink online service for newspapers, and a key member of the Knight-Ridder Viewtron videotex service. Roger is currently a professional in residence at Kent State University. He is also quite active on the international conference circuit, and is a captivating speaker.
Mediamorphosis, a term coined by Fidler in 1990, refers to the transformation of communication media, usually brought about by the complex interplay of perceived needs, competitive and political pressures, and social and technological innovations. Instead of studying each form separately, mediamorphosis "encourages us to examine all forms as members of an interdependent system, and to note the similarities and relationships that exist among past, present and emerging forms," Fidler begins.
According to Paul Saffo of the California-based Institute for the Future, new ideas take about three decades to fully seep into a culture. There are three stages of diffusion, marked by phases of excitement, penetration and standardisation.
The rate of adoption of a new technology in a society, according to media scholar Everett Rogers, is determined by factors like its perceived relative advantage, compatibility with existing technologies, overall complexity, reliability, and direct observability. Additional influences, according to British academic Brian Winston, come from accelerators and brakes such as socio-economic forces and political motivation. Fidler illustrates the interplay between these various factors in the manner in which FM radio at first floundered for about thirty years before dethroning AM radio in North America within a spurt of adoption of 10 years.
Based on these perspectives and his own personal insights, Fidler identifies six principles of mediamorphosis - coexistence and coevolution of media forms, gradual metamorphosis of new media forms from old ones, propagation of dominant traits in media forms, survival of media forms and enterprises in a changing environment, merits and needs for adopting new media, and delays from proof of concept to widespread adoption of new media.
Fidler then classifies media forms into three domains: interpersonal, broadcast, and document (including newspapers and Web pages). He sketches the evolution of each of these forms of media through history. These media domains differ in flow and control of content, presentation, and reception constraints.
According to Fidler, there are three great mediamorphoses in human communication: spoken language, written language, and the digital language. Spoken language led to social group formation, complex problem solving skills, and the development of "broadcast" forms like storytelling and ritual performance - which in turn divided society into performers, gatekeepers, and audiences. Written language ushered in the development of portable documents, mechanical printing, and mass media.
Digital language - unlike spoken and written - enables communication between machines, and mediated communication between humans. In digital language, according to MIT's Nicholas Negroponte, human distinctions between text, images and sounds are irrelevant - they are all represented as bits. We are in the earliest stages of such transformations, says Fidler - but we can already see "how computer networks using digital language are greatly extending human interactions throughout the world."
Three chapters cover technological and cultural contexts of the third mediamorphosis, as well as case studies of successes and failures of new media technologies like online services. The third mediamorphosis was marked by the invention of electricity, the convergence of telegraphy and photography, electro-mechanical and electronic technologies, computers, and networks. "The linking of tens of millions of individual minds through the Internet and other telecommunications systems may, indeed, be accelerating the cross impacts of emerging technologies and the development of new media," says Fidler.
Accompanying socio-political forces in the U.S. over the last century have been competition between various media organisations, changes in government regulation, and increasing competition for existing advertising revenues. In such a context, early incarnations of online services like the TV-based Viewtron failed due to unrealistic expectations, misunderstood customer needs, and inertia on the part of the investors. Interactive TV, too, failed to take off as a mass market medium.
"Generally overlooked were the traits of the interpersonal domain - two-way, participatory, unscheduled, and unmediated," Fidler explains. "Electronic mail services that combine text, graphics, voice and video will be integral to nearly all emerging forms of digital media," he predicts.
Three chapters sketch out projected scenarios of mediamorphosis in the interpersonal, broadcast, and document domains in the year 2010. "The Internet and consumer online networks will meld with telephone and satellite/cable-TV systems to form a seamless, global computer-mediated communication service," says Fidler. Software agents will act as personal librarians and researchers, users will interact in virtual reality systems, and concerns will arise about social fragmentation and individual privacy.
Broadcasters will use the Web to broadcast to growing numbers of cybercommunities. Ethical issues will be raised over the use of sophisticated morphing technologies and the role of parental control. "There is, however, one fusion that does seem all but certain - the melding of video and film," Fidler predicts.
Newspapers represent the "most complex as well as the most immediately challenged form within the document domain," says Fidler. They are challenged by the trend towards online publishing as well as public perceptions of waste and environmental problems. Portable digital tablets are already beginning to emerge in the form of personal gadgets like the Apple Newton and Sharp Zaurus. In the future, news may be distributed through "a global network of electronic newsstands similar to automated teller machines," according to Fidler.
"Despite the present fascination with the apparently limitless amounts of information that can be found in cyberspace, I am convinced that manageable, branded packages of information that provide an editorial context and have a clear beginning and end will continue to be preferred by most people," says Fidler.
The last chapter addresses some of the promises and challenges posed to media, audiences, educators and governments by technologies like the Internet. "Governments are worrying that they will lose control over sensitive information and will be unable to monitor financial transactions across state and national borders. Parents worry that their children might be exposed to hard-core pornogrpahy and accosted by pedophiles. Already there are growing concerns that African Americans and Hispanics may be left out of the electronic loop," says Fidler. Though these are serious concerns, the truth is that "societies have always been affected and transformed by new forms of media," with mixed outcomes.
"As the age of digital communication bursts forth, I believe the most valued characteristics of future mainstream media are likely to be their credibility and connections to the communities they serve," Fidler concludes.
In sum, "Mediamorphosis" is a valuable, insightful piece of work for media analysts and practitioners. A list of online resources and discussion lists would have rounded off the material perfectly. Anywhere: How Global Connectivity is Revolutionizing the Way We Do Business ReviewThis book hits the pluses and provides an optimistic view of emerging connectivity, but it's weak on addressing the downsides and reality of it. So, I'll begin by pointing out a few things this book overlooks. Then I'll sum up what it addresses.
What the author doesn't tell you
First, there's the productivity cost. It's huge. I used to carry a cell phone everywhere. Now, I don't use one. In fact, I rarely answer my regular telephone. Sometimes, I unplug it for hours at a time.
I don't like being interrupted, especially when I'm trying to do something productive. A business that inflicts constant connectivity on its employees has a highly distracted workforce. Ms. Green makes it sound as though the Twitter-averse among us are like the e-mail-averse of times past. But this is an apples to oranges comparison.
Second, there's the attention cost. E-mail is asynchronous. Texting and tweeting are "immediate response" activities. Can anyone who's chained to a frequently-interrupting device really pay attention to any worthwhile activity? Any technology that interrupts you simply because it can is just too costly, unless you aren't the kind of person who does anything that matters.
Third, there's the subscription cost. If you have a mobile data plan, ask yourself what you are really getting for all that money. If it's just interruptions and the ability to send/receive throwaway photos, then it might not be all that good. For a business, a mobile data plan may be essential. But how many people are paying $99 a month or more for something that they probably would not miss if they stopped using it? If you have one of these plans, is it making your life better or is it an addiction?
A fourth problem is the devices are insanely small. It's not convenient to carry around a pair of reading glasses just so you can take a phone call. I have a PocketPC that I don't use because I can't read the screen in daylight at all, and indoors I need reading glasses to read it. The manufacturer's solution to this problem was to make the next generation even smaller.
Ms. Green also indicates that older folks just don't get it and will eventually be replaced by their hipper, more tech-savvy younger counterparts through retirement. What she overlooks is the reason older people are far less adoptive of this technology than younger people is presbyopia. We have reams of data showing that humans need larger fonts as we age. That's just the way it is. When the devices are explicitly designed for people under 25 and consequently exclude people beyond a certain age, the adoption rates by age are quite predictable.
So, we have some huge barriers to "anywhere" connectivity. For the vast majority of us, it just isn't workable. Does that mean we aren't going to see vastly increased connectivity that is far more mobile than today? No. But it does mean the connectivity needs to serve the users rather than make them servile to it, and it must not rely on unreadable screens or gadgets that seem designed expressly to annoy the users. Until those requirements are met, connectivity will fall far short of its potential.
What the author does tell you
Ms. Green addresses this topic of ubiquitous connectivity in 250 pages. The book consists of four Parts:
Part I: Welcome to Anywhere. This consists of three chapters, and in these she outlines and describes the "Anywhere Revolution." I think these three chapters give the reader a good feel for where we're eventually heading and why.
Part II: The Anywhere Consumer. This consists of three chapters, and in these she presents four basic category of consumer. I'm not sure about these categories. I have fit into three of them at one time or another, and don't see where I fit presently.
I don't have her research data, but it seems to me there is a fifth category that has a higher population than the other four combined. I call it "Annoyed Consumer." We get tired of Windows memory problems, crap that pops up when you're trying to type, screens we can't read, interruptions we don't want, high bills from service providers, and just a host of usability issues. We are not amused.
Part III: The Anywhere Enterprise. This consists of two chapters. I think it needs a third. Ask hiring managers about what bugs them today, and you are going to hear "Kids texting during interviews." There is a difference between productive connectivity and counterproductive connectivity. The author doesn't explore this, at all. A chapter on how businesses can properly address this difference seems essential to me.
For example, do you really want your sales people texting during a sales call instead of focusing on that customer? Of course not. But at the same time, it would be wonderful for a sales person to be able to answer a question for the customer to close the sale. Shortening the sales cycle can accelerate revenue, and that's generally a good thing. Insulting a customer through rude behavior, however, is generally not advantageous. The rudeness factor is a big problem with today's so-called "hip generation" and it's something business needs to be able to rechannel into positive behaviors.
Part IV: Profiting from Anywhere consists of four chapters. In these chapters, the author basically says you need to max out your anywhere quotient as fast as you can. This isn't quite the way things really are. Companies that still operate on paper processes and/or have very low connectivity do need to modernize. And some companies that are current with technology, processes, and connectivity do need to be working on upgrading as the bar rises. But these are the outliers on the bell curve.
Most of us would do well to assess, based on the information presented here, and plan for staying reasonably current. I think this book is helpful toward this purpose, because it gives a good view of what is coming. But the real challenge for profit-minded businesses is going to be properly restraining connectivity to the scope of the business.
A couple of years ago, we were in the midst of blogomania. The big advice was that businesses must blog or die. Following this advice has proven to be a colossal waste of resources for most businesses, and in 2010 this realization even dawned on some business journalists. Blogs and banality have come to be synonymous, with few exceptions.
Facebook appears to have peaked out and to now be declining in its influence and popularity. People can take only so much blather, meaningless detail, and banality before wanting to have a life.
Similarly, companies can divert only so many resources to nonproductive activities before seeing their customer service, productivity, and profitability slide. The issue isn't one of having enough connectivity. It's one of having the right connectivity.
A solution seeking a problem generally does more harm than good to a business. If a business has a problem that specific types of connectivity can solve, then it needs to look at adopting those kinds of connectivity. And quickly, before the problems metastasize. But a business must also look at the potential risks involved with that adoption and develop a plan that properly addresses those risks. Otherwise, the cure might be worse than the disease.
The SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is a core business tool for evaluating new ventures, proposed projects, and other things a business might wish to evaluate. I think if the author had used this framework for Part III and Part IV, the book would have been far more useful.
An important point the author drives at again and again is every business must look at the connectivity issues that are here now and the ones that are emerging. I think this book definitely helps identify and define many key issues in that arena.Anywhere: How Global Connectivity is Revolutionizing the Way We Do Business Overview
