Strategic Retail Management: Text and International Cases ReviewStrategic Retail Management by Zentes, Morschett, and Schramm-Klein presents a different approach to the study of retailing. Whereas other texts provide a broad overview of retailing in general, this book limits the theoretical aspects to the first three chapters and devotes the rest of the 15 chapters to the actual design, implementation and evaluation of retail strategies. Moreover, it contains a number of interesting cases that tests the reader's analytical and conceptual abilities.
The text is eminently suitable for both practitioners and students who want to get a good grasp of retailing. Moreover, it provides a solid foundation for managerial decision-making.Strategic Retail Management: Text and International Cases Overview

Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age ReviewDon't let the (literally) clueless title turn you off. This is an impressive tour de force. The first half is a concise, entertaining, and enormously informative history of technology and its effects on our social customs and ways of looking at the world. Lane's grasp of mountains of material and his ability to concisely summarize it are awesome. Since I am in a related field, I intended to skim it, but was drawn into reading every word. The second half is more specialized, but is only tangentially devoted to "obscene profits" (that awful title looks like a publicists's handiwork). It poignantly conveys the ways the new technology reveals for the first time that men's obsession with pornography is of epidemic proportions.Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age Overview

Facebook Marketing: Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Business Review
I liked this book. I thought it was well written and well outlined. I'm not sure I would have included on the cover the following: "Leverage social media to grow your business." But the book provides a "rough guide" to Facebook. And I think it does a pretty good job.
Over the past year some leaders in the social media marketing realm have been materializing. Besides blogs of all kinds, it seems fair to me to say these leaders include MySpace, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook. I've read and reviewed the following books on some of these platforms:
YouTube for Business (ISBN: 9780789737977)
The Rough Guide to MySpace (ISBN: 9781843538424)
Amp Your MySpace Page (ISBN: 9780071490726)
I'm on LinkedIn, Now What? (ISBN: 9781600050695)
Until I read the instant book being reviewed I had not read any on Facebook. I am aware of "I'm on Facebook, Now What?" (ISBN: 9781600050954). But I haven't seen or read it. If it is anything like the book its author wrote on LinkedIn, then it is probably a good book. However, I think "Facebook Marketing" does a better job covering Facebook than the LinkedIn book did regarding LinkedIn.
This book is NOT about social media marketing per se. It is not going to tell you how to leverage social media in order to grow your business. You will have to read other books on that subject. And the coverage on that topic is expanding and changing as I write this review. What this book is about is the Facebook platform that can be used as a marketer's tool when practicing social media marketing. It tells us about User Profiles, Facebook Groups, how to create Web pages within Facebook, hosting events on Facebook, and other things that one can take advantage of at Facebook.
It's the "other things" that take up half the book that may be nice to know about. But I doubt they are practical for growing a business. But the first half of the book is worth its weight in gold for anyone who wants to use Facebook in a big way to practice social media marketing. 5 stars!
PS. Examine the Search Inside feature offered by Amazon on this book. It provides a detailed Table of Contents for you to examine and see for yourself what is included in this book.Facebook Marketing: Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Business Overview

Anywhere: How Global Connectivity is Revolutionizing the Way We Do Business ReviewThis book hits the pluses and provides an optimistic view of emerging connectivity, but it's weak on addressing the downsides and reality of it. So, I'll begin by pointing out a few things this book overlooks. Then I'll sum up what it addresses.
What the author doesn't tell you
First, there's the productivity cost. It's huge. I used to carry a cell phone everywhere. Now, I don't use one. In fact, I rarely answer my regular telephone. Sometimes, I unplug it for hours at a time.
I don't like being interrupted, especially when I'm trying to do something productive. A business that inflicts constant connectivity on its employees has a highly distracted workforce. Ms. Green makes it sound as though the Twitter-averse among us are like the e-mail-averse of times past. But this is an apples to oranges comparison.
Second, there's the attention cost. E-mail is asynchronous. Texting and tweeting are "immediate response" activities. Can anyone who's chained to a frequently-interrupting device really pay attention to any worthwhile activity? Any technology that interrupts you simply because it can is just too costly, unless you aren't the kind of person who does anything that matters.
Third, there's the subscription cost. If you have a mobile data plan, ask yourself what you are really getting for all that money. If it's just interruptions and the ability to send/receive throwaway photos, then it might not be all that good. For a business, a mobile data plan may be essential. But how many people are paying $99 a month or more for something that they probably would not miss if they stopped using it? If you have one of these plans, is it making your life better or is it an addiction?
A fourth problem is the devices are insanely small. It's not convenient to carry around a pair of reading glasses just so you can take a phone call. I have a PocketPC that I don't use because I can't read the screen in daylight at all, and indoors I need reading glasses to read it. The manufacturer's solution to this problem was to make the next generation even smaller.
Ms. Green also indicates that older folks just don't get it and will eventually be replaced by their hipper, more tech-savvy younger counterparts through retirement. What she overlooks is the reason older people are far less adoptive of this technology than younger people is presbyopia. We have reams of data showing that humans need larger fonts as we age. That's just the way it is. When the devices are explicitly designed for people under 25 and consequently exclude people beyond a certain age, the adoption rates by age are quite predictable.
So, we have some huge barriers to "anywhere" connectivity. For the vast majority of us, it just isn't workable. Does that mean we aren't going to see vastly increased connectivity that is far more mobile than today? No. But it does mean the connectivity needs to serve the users rather than make them servile to it, and it must not rely on unreadable screens or gadgets that seem designed expressly to annoy the users. Until those requirements are met, connectivity will fall far short of its potential.
What the author does tell you
Ms. Green addresses this topic of ubiquitous connectivity in 250 pages. The book consists of four Parts:
Part I: Welcome to Anywhere. This consists of three chapters, and in these she outlines and describes the "Anywhere Revolution." I think these three chapters give the reader a good feel for where we're eventually heading and why.
Part II: The Anywhere Consumer. This consists of three chapters, and in these she presents four basic category of consumer. I'm not sure about these categories. I have fit into three of them at one time or another, and don't see where I fit presently.
I don't have her research data, but it seems to me there is a fifth category that has a higher population than the other four combined. I call it "Annoyed Consumer." We get tired of Windows memory problems, crap that pops up when you're trying to type, screens we can't read, interruptions we don't want, high bills from service providers, and just a host of usability issues. We are not amused.
Part III: The Anywhere Enterprise. This consists of two chapters. I think it needs a third. Ask hiring managers about what bugs them today, and you are going to hear "Kids texting during interviews." There is a difference between productive connectivity and counterproductive connectivity. The author doesn't explore this, at all. A chapter on how businesses can properly address this difference seems essential to me.
For example, do you really want your sales people texting during a sales call instead of focusing on that customer? Of course not. But at the same time, it would be wonderful for a sales person to be able to answer a question for the customer to close the sale. Shortening the sales cycle can accelerate revenue, and that's generally a good thing. Insulting a customer through rude behavior, however, is generally not advantageous. The rudeness factor is a big problem with today's so-called "hip generation" and it's something business needs to be able to rechannel into positive behaviors.
Part IV: Profiting from Anywhere consists of four chapters. In these chapters, the author basically says you need to max out your anywhere quotient as fast as you can. This isn't quite the way things really are. Companies that still operate on paper processes and/or have very low connectivity do need to modernize. And some companies that are current with technology, processes, and connectivity do need to be working on upgrading as the bar rises. But these are the outliers on the bell curve.
Most of us would do well to assess, based on the information presented here, and plan for staying reasonably current. I think this book is helpful toward this purpose, because it gives a good view of what is coming. But the real challenge for profit-minded businesses is going to be properly restraining connectivity to the scope of the business.
A couple of years ago, we were in the midst of blogomania. The big advice was that businesses must blog or die. Following this advice has proven to be a colossal waste of resources for most businesses, and in 2010 this realization even dawned on some business journalists. Blogs and banality have come to be synonymous, with few exceptions.
Facebook appears to have peaked out and to now be declining in its influence and popularity. People can take only so much blather, meaningless detail, and banality before wanting to have a life.
Similarly, companies can divert only so many resources to nonproductive activities before seeing their customer service, productivity, and profitability slide. The issue isn't one of having enough connectivity. It's one of having the right connectivity.
A solution seeking a problem generally does more harm than good to a business. If a business has a problem that specific types of connectivity can solve, then it needs to look at adopting those kinds of connectivity. And quickly, before the problems metastasize. But a business must also look at the potential risks involved with that adoption and develop a plan that properly addresses those risks. Otherwise, the cure might be worse than the disease.
The SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is a core business tool for evaluating new ventures, proposed projects, and other things a business might wish to evaluate. I think if the author had used this framework for Part III and Part IV, the book would have been far more useful.
An important point the author drives at again and again is every business must look at the connectivity issues that are here now and the ones that are emerging. I think this book definitely helps identify and define many key issues in that arena.Anywhere: How Global Connectivity is Revolutionizing the Way We Do Business Overview

Wired Youth: The Social World of Adolescence in the Information Age (Adolescence and Society Series) ReviewThe latest addition to the outstanding 'Adolescence and Society' series from Routledge, "Wired Youth: The Social World of Adolescence in the Information Age" is the collaborative work of Gustavo S. Mesch (Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Haifa) and Ilan Talmud (Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Haifa). This 184-page compendium presents a seminal introduction and description of the literature on youth sociability and relationship formation in this era of personal electronic communications. Of special interest is the attention paid to the negative and positive consequences of adolescent usage (and contemporary dependence upon) online communication. A work of impressive and painstaking scholarship, enhanced with twenty pages of references and a comprehensive index, "Wired Youth" is a strongly recommended addition to academic library Contemporary Sociology reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication ReviewI teach a course in Mass Media and this is the text we use. Regarding the other review left here for the book.. it is really not meant to be casual or 'easy' reading -- it is meant to be an in depth exploration of (often) complicated issues.
Things I like about the text:
- important vocabulary is pulled out to the margins for easy identification
- the importance of media literacy and cultural implications are explored
- various types of media are addressed *as well as* important tangental issues like conglomerates, advertising, etc.
- modern examples that are easily recognizable to students are used
Things I'd like to see done differently:
- The questions at the end of each chapter/unit could be better. Many of them are purely reading comprehension.. which is fine.. but I'd also like to see questions that require more synthesis or depth of understanding.
- It would be great if there could be some sort cross-reference done within the text.
Overall, I give this book high marks for solid information well presented.Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication Overview

Sticky Marketing: Why Everything in Marketing Has Changed and What to Do about It ReviewAnd incase you are unsure about your decision to read the book after you have paid $27.95 for it, there are two pages worth of "praise for sticky marketing", quoting various CEOs and Professors of businesses and schools you have probably never heard of.
Leboff provides a structured, organized argument calling for a paradigm shift within Marketing: customers have changed, communication has changed, and therefore, marketing must change. His approach and anecdotal examples give his arguments substance, while providing a nice historical context of why this shift is necessary. "Ask not what your Marketing can do for you, but what your Marketing can do for your customer(51)" is theme of his overall advice.
Leboff offers a "Problem Map" template; a mechanism for understanding you product or service through the eyes of a customer (Leboff 63)". I realize that much of the methodology in marketing is qualitative, making evaluation methods such as the Problem Map inherently subjective in nature. However, this leaves responses non-standardized, very open-ended, and still from the company's perspective, perhaps negating it's purpose.
In utilizing the Problem Map exercise, businesses are to identify four problems that their customers "might have". Leboff explains the method; "You start by filling out a Problem Map by considering four headline problems your potential customers may have, which you know you can solve (Leboff 60)". Which you know you can solve? This right here is a fallacy. What good is it to ask a question you already know the answer to?
He goes on to say, "This is not about you, it is an exercise focused solely on your customer. If forces you to put yourself in your customer's shoes"(Leboff 60). While this is an effective exercise to try and have more of a consumer-oriented mindset, it is still our perception of our customers' problems, not actually problems our customers have.
This book was a quick read, while it didn't offer any groundbreaking observations, it was worthwhile.

The Age of Engage: Reinventing Marketing for Today's Connected, Collaborative, and Hyperinteractive Culture ReviewIf you have not had any (or very little) exposure to digital marketing, by all means buy the book and read it. However, for anyone who has had some experience with digital marketing the last 5 years, this book offers very little new thinking (unless you are really bad at your job).
While the book is full of examples, if flows poorly. The author's points seem to get lost in a somewhat poor structure, and too many points thrown at the user without a proper flow to it. The author should definitely look into pyramid consulting techniques in order to present better. And given the author's savvy in online marketing, it does make me wonder whether the other reviews are legitimate.
But again, if you are a CEO, or non-marketing exec, or an "old school" marketer, this books seems like a useful intro to you. But you should be out reading Techcrunch, Marketing 2.0, Mobilemarketer, Mashable etc etc on a daily basis, and you would not only learn just as quick, you'd stay more current. The Age of Engage: Reinventing Marketing for Today's Connected, Collaborative, and Hyperinteractive Culture Overview

How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office Live ReviewBecause I was new to Microsoft Office Live, I bought this book, hoping it would help me. It did not. I was only looking for the basics. The book does not list the steps necessary to complete an action, is confusing, and rambles around without coming to the point. It could have been, and should have been, writen in 150 pages instead of the nearly 400 it used. I had read the help pages in the program's help sections and expected the book to expound upon them. With neary 400 pages, it definitely should have. Not only did it not do this, it did not even mirror the information given in the "help" sections of the program. Often times, I thought it was written by a Microsoft employee since it spent so much time talking about how much better the Microsoft Live program was than others of its kind. Maybe, if you are an advanced user, this book would work for you. But if you're a novice, I'd suggest you try another book. How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office Live Overview

Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy ReviewMost business books take 200 pages to explain one basic notion. Not Age of Conversation. Since this is a collaborative book by over 170 people, pretty much every page contains a stand-alone insight. This is a perfect book to pick up in lost moments to quickly read a couple of thought-starting entries. Even better, because the 170 marketing, PR and communications experts actually communicated whiel they were writing this, after a while it turns out the stand-alone insights are all connected to form an interesting collection where many ideas build one greater story.
