Mechanical Behavior of Materials ReviewThere are many books on the market that deal with mechanical behavior of materials. Two of the better ones I've seen are Hertzberg and this one by Courtney. What distinguishes Courtney's book from the others is that I feel that he's written his book with a certain sympathy toward the student, and he covers nonmetallic materials, as well as metals, in depth. To illustrate the first point, Courtney's figure captions are extensive, about a paragraph long on average. This makes it easier to study the figures, since they're all described in depth in the captions. You don't have to look at the text to find the information relevant to the figure. This makes it easier on the reader. Also, in some sections his writing style takes on an informality that's refreshing, as if he were in the room lecturing to you. Too many textbooks resort to stilted phrases such as "The reader should . . ." or studiously avoid using the word "you" for fear of bridging some imagined wall between author and reader. Professor Courtney would have none of that. As for my second point, Courtney covers metals, ceramics and polymers, as well as composite materials and cellular solids. I would fault the book only for the poor reproduction quality of many of its figures; they're legible but look as though they've been scanned in at very low resolution. I would also have liked a more comprehensive subject index. But overall, I recommend this book as one of the best in a field loaded with textbooks.Mechanical Behavior of Materials Overview

Marketing, Principles & Perspectives: Principles & Perspectives (Mcgraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Marketing) ReviewI picked up this book as a preparation for the CLEP marketing exam. While it is easy to read, the layout is cluttered and distracting. The authors give a rah-rah treatment to e-commerce, presenting multiple .com case studies throughout the book (each chapter begins with an internet site and description).
It is clear that the authors were infatuated with the so-called "new economy," and the book suffers a lot as a result. Using it as a primer is tiring, as you have to separate the essentials of marketing from the e-commerce cheerleading.

International Business: The Challenge of Global Competition ReviewAs a first time instructor using this book, I was floored by the amount of useless data in the book that students must dig through to get to the important points of each chapter. Since the power point slides provided with the book only did an outline of the chapters, they were not of much help in giving a lecture. It was also absolutely amazing that a book that bills itself as being published in 2004 (but I received in 2003) is behind the times in a significant number of topics (e.g. it still refers to the G7 - not even mentioning the G8 even though I think it was about 1997 that the G8 became official). The section on religion was a perfect example of how to offend someone in another culture. The author needs to attend a diversity training course! A majority of the questions in the sample tests did not deal with topics that were significant in the chapters, but rather minor insignificant points. It may be the best book out there for an international business class but it shouldn't be priced the way it is for what is clearly an outdated edition.International Business: The Challenge of Global Competition Overview

To make matters worse, the material varies from edition to edition and even though the instructor told us to get the seventh addition, he is clearly using a test bank from an earlier or later edition where the information has changed. Aside from that obvious annoyance, the text is very vague in describing concepts and does a very poor job of making the reader actually understand the content. It is necessary to do research in order to understand the concepts fully and the information found through research always conflicts with the information given in the text.Introduction to the Hospitality Industry Overview

Managing and Using Information Systems ReviewI read this book during a MCIS class. This book is very well written for those looking for abroad overview of topics. This will cover many different topics including one chapter on financials. For me this book happened to recap a lot previous courses which I have taken. I enjoyed this because it made me recall those ideas and realize that those other authors are sharing the same thoughts about many disparate subjects and topics.
The companion website for students was very help during my studies. They included a powerpoint slide per chapter which broke down the learning objects, the key points in each chapter's sub-heading, as well as a summary of the chapter in the end. They also included additional notes and resources for more in depth review of the chapter in discussion which my professor did not use but other may use I am sure.
I would recommend this book for those wanting a board overview of the current state of many things an IT manager must take into consideration. If your looking for in-depth coverage on a specific topic you might do better looking elsewhere.Managing and Using Information Systems Overview

Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business ReviewIf you want a general IT book then don't even think about buying this one, despite its title. This is a textbook for college business majors, and looks at things from the business angle.
The book is less suitable for non-student readers. It is geared for use by a lecturer who can draw attention to the important concepts underlying the field of IT, and can steer students to useful supplementary material.
The book races across the surface of the whole field of IT. The authors have packed in a lot of material, but at a cost. The explanations may be good enough for students to answer a quiz about the various buzzwords, but there is not enough space here to cover anything in depth. The students, and you, may be left without a clear idea of what the words really mean.
At the other end of the scale, the book struggles to make plain the broad sweep of IT concepts. Although the authors try hard, ideas tend to get lost amidst the large number of factoids.
One book is never going to be enough to cover all of IT. Your choices are to be more selective about which area you want to learn about, to pick a book which is more clearly aimed at being a simple overview, or to buy this book and work really hard at following up its leads to other material to fill in the gaps.Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business Overview

Contemporary Marketing Review"They wanted to write a book that wasn't an encyclopedia." So says the authors, and boy did they fail.
This book attempts to cover WAY too much material in its 650 odd pages. Here's an example from someone whose field is economics. In less than two pages this book introduces the following:
variable cost, average total cost, marginal cost, fixed costs, price elasticity, determinants of elasticity (which they absolutely botch), and optimal output via merger of Marginal Revenue and Marginal Cost (with the four curves associated therein all plotted at once). WOW! Who knew that economics was so easy? Two pages to explain what most economic textbooks can't do in less than two full chapters. Most chapters run around twenty-five to twenty-eight or so pages in length and introduce somewhere around forty new vocabulary terms each; an astonishing amount of slam-and-jam style learning.
This book needs one of two things to happen: either it needs to double in length in order to discuss the truck loads of terminology it deems necessary to learn marketing; or it needs to focus on far fewer topics.Contemporary Marketing Overview

The book is excellent for this purpose and for those wishing to study the topic but it is not a casual read. It is strong on information and communications technology in business that support the enormous changes in this area over the past few decades. It is not so strong on database and other program usage, etc., and I found recommended supplemental readings (from articles older than the date of publication of the book) helpful in studying this area so it is perhaps better as part of an organized course than for self-study.Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business Overview

Didn't look like it was previously owned or anything. All in all a very good seller. The book itself is very informational.
