LSP Bundle: Language, Society and Power: An Introduction ReviewClarity and logical explanation of the modern theories of language and linguistics is this book's strength. I exhaustively covered this book because of a college class that it was required for. Much about language that is basic for moving on from elementary linguistics is covered in this book.
Contemporary classic theories of language are included (ie Saussure's theories, Sapir-Whorf, etc) which sets the reader off into a fascinating discovery of how language promotes or inhibits one's power in modern society.
In such contemporary issues as political correctness and the Standard American English debate, a slightly more leftist view is employed in the writing of the book than I would've preferred, but nonetheless, there is a suffice and clear explanation of the information throughout.

I purchased the book for my parents to be able to follow simple step by step instructions on how to do functions in AOL. There needs to be a more simplified version, with more pictures and fewer words on how to use the functions to consider this a guide for dummies. I found his analysis of contemporary trends in consumption interesting and provocative. Also interesting was his conclusion that as people grow accustomed to the new means of consumption that they have to be continually impressed by something new. I thought his remarks on the architecture of the "cathedrals of consumption" were also very important. The most unsettling aspect of the book was Ritzer's comparison of modern styles of consumption with religious institutions, and even the conformity of religious institutions to this new means of consumption (i.e., the mega-churches of today). Hackers hack because hacking is both fun and also a challenge to them. Hackers spend every waking moment in front of two to three flat panel displays and a keyboard searching, probing, exploring, looking for ways to get into systems and leave their mark much like a dog leaves its mark in a new neighborhood.
This book tells the tales of an unknown hacker in 2000 that brought down the websites of Amazon, CNN, Dell, E-TRADE, eBay, IBM, Oracle, Lego's, Disneyland, Fredrick's of Hollywood, Yahoo! and many more. Panic ensued from Silicon Valley to the White House to people that had to tune into the Fox network of all places (fair and balanced) since the CNN site was d o w n . The FBI, police, and independent security experts (read...former hackers that joined the good side...) launched a manhunt as President Clinton convened a cyber security summit to discuss how best to protect America's information infrastructure from future attacks. Mr. Mattonski's email account was hacked and fake emails were sent to his family and friends stating that he was switching jobs to work for Safeway when in fact he was very happy at Starbucks! After thousands of hours of wiretapping the cops and other law enforcement officials lightly knocked on Mafiaboy's home door to execute a late-night raid and came face-to-face with the most wanted man (really boy) in cyberspace. At the time he was a fifteen-year-old whose username was "Mafiaboyzzz." Despite requests from every major media outlet, that young man, Michael Calce, has never spoken publicly about his crimes--until now. Not even to CNN, but did say yes to Fox (fair and balanced) but pulled out at the last minute.
Mafiaboyzzz has penned this true-crime thrilla that is both electrifying and fast paced. He puts us directly into the mind / gray matter of a hacker to the point that if you knew how to code you could hack to so don't even try.
Mafiaboyzza has served his time and wrote this book during his prison time (poor engrish).
This is an outstanding book and you too should buy it and learn about hacking and smacking and Mafiaboyzza. You will be happy you did!

Maintaining and Evolving Successful Commercial Web Sites: Managing Change, Content, Customer Relationships, and Site Measurement (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) ReviewThis is the second book I've read by Mr. Friedlein that shows his extensive experience and ability to clearly impart realistic advice (his other book is "Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites", ISBN 1558606785).
What sets this book apart from others is the way he focuses on two critical aspects of web site maintenance, (1) change management, and (2) content management. Whereas there are a number of books that address content management, this is the first I've read that goes into detail about change management. Many books mix the two, and fail to emphasize the criticality of change management on site reliability and availability. These two parts of the book alone warrant reading it.
There are two additional parts of the book that provide unique insights into critical success factors of web site management and evolution, which are customer relationship management, and site measurement. Whereas the first two parts deal with behind-the-scenes maintenance, these deal with business aspects, which do need to continuously evolve if a commercial site is to provide revenue in a highly competitive environment.
The part on customer relationship management starts with a primer on CRM to assure that readers understand a much-hyped topic. It then goes into how to achieve success factors by addressing understanding your users, personalization, community building, and customer service.
Site measurement, the final part of the book, is also detailed and filled with advice. Topics include: an overview titled, "Promises and Challenges of Web Site Measurement" and chapters on evolution of E-intelligence, measurement approaches and techniques, and reporting and analysis. This part of the book wraps up with chapters on how to improve a web site and tackling a web site measurement project.
Like his first book (cited above and which I highly recommend), this one is essential reading for anyone working with commercial web sites. The author, in my opinion, is one of the most savvy experts who has unique insights in all aspects of web site project and management. As advertised, this is truly "not a book for bankers that want to maintain the status quo." Brett dives into his topics with enthusiasm and talks very directly about how customer behavior and technology, always disruptive forces, are dramatically changing the financial services industry. The book covers everything from measurement of customer/client/member expectations and experience, and offers very good insight on how to improve service levels through the very disruptive forces that often befuddle this industry (e.g. new technologies like social media, mobile payments, OFM). He dedicates entire chapters to topics like the call center, brick and mortar branching, CRM, and VRU systems to manage customer interactions. Who else writes about VRU systems in banking and the impact on the customer experience? He offers sage advice on the state of web development in meeting customer needs (lacking in many industries quite frankly) and other self-service channels like ATMs and online/remote banking. He does a good job of providing some context for technology changes, and how recent innovation will impact banking over the next decade. If you are in financial services industry and are interested in where banking is heading, you'll be well served by picking this book up and being part of ongoing trends that will be impact our industry.
