Get Content Get Customers: Turn Prospects into Buyers with Content Marketing ReviewI have been hearing that content is king for years, but now I understand how that applies in a world where buyers hate all the advertising that bombards them. That explains why our traditional marketing efforts don't work anymore and why we need a new content marketig approach.
My biggest aha from the book is that moving to an effective content marketing strategy means changing the way you think--but may be even less expensive than old-fashioned advertising and marketing.
Get Content. Get Customers. shows how and why changes in old-line media, buyer behavior, and technology have empowered--and required--smart marketers to "think like publishers" as the authors put it. That means understanding what problems and solutions are absolutely critical to your customers and providing rich content that provides meaningful answer to those challenges.
I loved the case studies which detail how content marketing has paid off on the bottom-line from a one person kitchen designer to Best Buy, a multi-billion dollar seller of kitchen appliances and high-end electronics. Every case study offers ideas that even small companies can put into practice.
Finally, the book provides a step by step illustration of how a hypothetical company can roll out a content marketing strategy that will really pay off.Get Content Get Customers: Turn Prospects into Buyers with Content Marketing Overview

eMarketing Strategies for the Complex Sale ReviewUnlike many of the "new marketing paradigm" books, Albee doesn't repeat the viewpoint of "be everywhere, all the time blogging, twittering, [insert latest social media craze here]." Instead, she advocates a more thoughtful approach to content marketing, one that is better suited to the deliberate and complex marketing activity of large B2B companies.
The planning guidelines are very helpful for making manageable a large corporate content effort and measuring the impact of your new marketing efforts. If you want to give your executives a book to help them understand why you are taking your marketing activities in new directions, this is the one.
The book also presents many guidelines for copywriters on new marketing styles, storytelling techniques, and understanding reader's needs for and perceptions of content.
The book has one significant shortcoming, which caused me to rate it as 4-star instead of 5-star: The book presents only a few real-world examples. More examples would help to validate the author's points and add interest to what is sometimes a dry writing style.
Overall, this is a book that you'll want to give a thorough read, mark-up, share with your team, and reference again.

Maintaining and Evolving Successful Commercial Web Sites: Managing Change, Content, Customer Relationships, and Site Measurement (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) ReviewThis is the second book I've read by Mr. Friedlein that shows his extensive experience and ability to clearly impart realistic advice (his other book is "Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites", ISBN 1558606785).
What sets this book apart from others is the way he focuses on two critical aspects of web site maintenance, (1) change management, and (2) content management. Whereas there are a number of books that address content management, this is the first I've read that goes into detail about change management. Many books mix the two, and fail to emphasize the criticality of change management on site reliability and availability. These two parts of the book alone warrant reading it.
There are two additional parts of the book that provide unique insights into critical success factors of web site management and evolution, which are customer relationship management, and site measurement. Whereas the first two parts deal with behind-the-scenes maintenance, these deal with business aspects, which do need to continuously evolve if a commercial site is to provide revenue in a highly competitive environment.
The part on customer relationship management starts with a primer on CRM to assure that readers understand a much-hyped topic. It then goes into how to achieve success factors by addressing understanding your users, personalization, community building, and customer service.
Site measurement, the final part of the book, is also detailed and filled with advice. Topics include: an overview titled, "Promises and Challenges of Web Site Measurement" and chapters on evolution of E-intelligence, measurement approaches and techniques, and reporting and analysis. This part of the book wraps up with chapters on how to improve a web site and tackling a web site measurement project.
Like his first book (cited above and which I highly recommend), this one is essential reading for anyone working with commercial web sites. The author, in my opinion, is one of the most savvy experts who has unique insights in all aspects of web site project and management. This book is yet another achievement and contribution to the body of knowledge by Mr. Friedlein.Maintaining and Evolving Successful Commercial Web Sites: Managing Change, Content, Customer Relationships, and Site Measurement (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) Overview

Content Strategy for the Web ReviewFirst, while it may sound obvious, let me state that this book is primarily about content strategy; it is not a user's guide to developing quality Web content. I believe a few other reviews have misrepresented this book, so please consider this before purchasing.
With that said, the book gives a very effective in-depth look at content strategy (or the lack thereof) for large corporations. However, there is quite a bit of repetition throughout the book, particularly in the beginning of each chapter. Halvorson also gives off a bit of a condescending tone in some of her writing, which can be a distraction.
The book is really aimed toward an audience that is already aware of how to develop good Web content but needs assistance building a strategic plan to implement it. By far, the best chapter is Audit (4) which goes into great detail on how to audit your site's current content.
The book is worth reading -- especially if you are in a large corporate setting -- but will not be completely useful if you are not adequately educated on how to create quality content. Before purchasing this, I recommend reading Janice (Ginny) Redish's "Letting Go of the Words."Content Strategy for the Web Overview
