Do It Wrong Quickly: How the Web Changes the Old Marketing Rules ReviewWho would have thought you'd ever hear an engineer encourage failure? Well, author, engineer and IBMer, Mike Moran does in his new book.
This book does more than make the case for a more nimble and carefree attitude. In today's supercharged marketplace, especially on the web, marketers cannot afford to wait for perfect. They need to track and react to the consumers quickly and adjust as they go.
Moran encourages listening and watching consumers and taking their lead. The book is an easy read, broken into manageable chunks of information. The best part, in my opinion, is the third section. Moran offers not only encouragement but suggestions on how to bring this new way of thinking into a corporate climate.
Well worth the time and money. I can't imagine you could read this book and not do a few things better, smarter and more profitably.

Effective UI: The Art of Building Great User Experience in Software ReviewThis invaluable review of the Processes & Business Benefits of User Interface/User Experience Design, provides so much unique and hard won insight into the process of developing superior user interfaces, the goals of users and the business, and in quantifying the benefits of UX design that I can only award it an outstanding Five Star review. One observation, that full engagement with the true goals of users is the end purpose of UI Design, is in itself worth the cost of this excellent book. But in spite of my viewing this book as revolutionary and offering outstanding and unique insights into what User Experience is, how to achieve it and what its benefits are, I do have one major criticism of this otherwise excellent book, its narrative approach and careful explication of its arguments on what the team at "Effective UI" lead to step by step discovery of these insights; there doesn't appear to be a top-down structure allowing for easy browsing of the book; it must be studied at length. Also, an experienced student of Interaction Design and User Experience cannot easily find what the new insights of this book are at a single glance, or find its prescription for a particular step of the design process.
This is an excellent and insightful book on UI Design and User Experience based on the consulting experience of a leading firm in this industry. But the book narrating their experience must be studied, it is difficult to browse.

App Savvy: Turning Ideas into iPad and iPhone Apps Customers Really Want ReviewI met Ken at ProductCamp DC and had the privilege to get an advanced copy of his book "App Savvy," published by O'Reilly. Ken is not only a great speaker in the mobile apps arena, he also did an excellent job writing about his "been there - done that" experience as an iOS product manager on some of his successful apps. This book is a concise, practical, step-by-step guide for anyone starting with Apple's iOS platform. It includes a wealth of useful information and tips ranging from product strategy (e.g. Blue Ocean), customer development, product launch, social media marketing, the iOS development/submission process, and post-launch support. On top of that, at the end of each chapter he included interviews with some of popular iOS developers/entrepreneurs (e.g. Mobclix, Smule) - lots of valuable lessons learned from the iOS community. Great read--highly recommended.App Savvy: Turning Ideas into iPad and iPhone Apps Customers Really Want Overview

Maintaining and Evolving Successful Commercial Web Sites: Managing Change, Content, Customer Relationships, and Site Measurement (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) ReviewThis is the second book I've read by Mr. Friedlein that shows his extensive experience and ability to clearly impart realistic advice (his other book is "Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites", ISBN 1558606785).
What sets this book apart from others is the way he focuses on two critical aspects of web site maintenance, (1) change management, and (2) content management. Whereas there are a number of books that address content management, this is the first I've read that goes into detail about change management. Many books mix the two, and fail to emphasize the criticality of change management on site reliability and availability. These two parts of the book alone warrant reading it.
There are two additional parts of the book that provide unique insights into critical success factors of web site management and evolution, which are customer relationship management, and site measurement. Whereas the first two parts deal with behind-the-scenes maintenance, these deal with business aspects, which do need to continuously evolve if a commercial site is to provide revenue in a highly competitive environment.
The part on customer relationship management starts with a primer on CRM to assure that readers understand a much-hyped topic. It then goes into how to achieve success factors by addressing understanding your users, personalization, community building, and customer service.
Site measurement, the final part of the book, is also detailed and filled with advice. Topics include: an overview titled, "Promises and Challenges of Web Site Measurement" and chapters on evolution of E-intelligence, measurement approaches and techniques, and reporting and analysis. This part of the book wraps up with chapters on how to improve a web site and tackling a web site measurement project.
Like his first book (cited above and which I highly recommend), this one is essential reading for anyone working with commercial web sites. The author, in my opinion, is one of the most savvy experts who has unique insights in all aspects of web site project and management. This book is yet another achievement and contribution to the body of knowledge by Mr. Friedlein.Maintaining and Evolving Successful Commercial Web Sites: Managing Change, Content, Customer Relationships, and Site Measurement (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) Overview

Content Strategy for the Web ReviewFirst, while it may sound obvious, let me state that this book is primarily about content strategy; it is not a user's guide to developing quality Web content. I believe a few other reviews have misrepresented this book, so please consider this before purchasing.
With that said, the book gives a very effective in-depth look at content strategy (or the lack thereof) for large corporations. However, there is quite a bit of repetition throughout the book, particularly in the beginning of each chapter. Halvorson also gives off a bit of a condescending tone in some of her writing, which can be a distraction.
The book is really aimed toward an audience that is already aware of how to develop good Web content but needs assistance building a strategic plan to implement it. By far, the best chapter is Audit (4) which goes into great detail on how to audit your site's current content.
The book is worth reading -- especially if you are in a large corporate setting -- but will not be completely useful if you are not adequately educated on how to create quality content. Before purchasing this, I recommend reading Janice (Ginny) Redish's "Letting Go of the Words."Content Strategy for the Web Overview
