The New York Times Practical Guide to Practically Everything: The Essential Companion for Everyday Life ReviewThe New York Times Practical Guide to Practically Everything bills itself as the guide for practically everything in everyday life. An essential one-stop resource. And indeed there are a lot of wonderful resources in it. It is nice to be able to pick up a book like this as a reference without always having to go to Google or the web.
But there are shortcomings, and it doesn't take long to see where this guide falls short. Imagine my surprise when I looked up what to do for common household mold and there were no listings for mold in the index! There are however, listings for things such as "Pets and celebrity photographers" (P. 480). If they are truly going to bill this as a "practical" guide for life, much more of the former and much less of the latter are necessary. I learned that a pet sitting can cost as much as $850. Will 99.9999% of the people reading this guide ever use that information? My guess is an unequivocal no.
Also, some of the information is simply not accurate. The book states that there are three types of bikes: road, mountain and hybrid. When in fact there are many more that could be listed, the most notable one being recumbent bikes.
A nice reference to have for the coffee table or bookshelf for a broad overview of information, but certainly not a necessary one to have on hand.The New York Times Practical Guide to Practically Everything: The Essential Companion for Everyday Life Overview

Sailing Skills & Seamanship, BOOK (Us Coast Guard Auxilary Assoc) ReviewUnlike many other sailing texts, this book covered a broad range of boating topics. Clearly not a sailor's fine-tuning tome, this book surprised me, however, by covering sail trim and boat balancing very adequately, and in some cases more clearly than more advanced sailing manuals. Since it's written for sailors in U.S. waters, it covers topics such as trailering, waterway navigation, and rules of the road for the U.S. more specifically than any other text I've seen.
All in all, I'd say this is my top choice for a text for a new sailor who's got down the sailing basics and needs to know the many practical aspects of safe sailing in U.S. waters.Sailing Skills & Seamanship, BOOK (Us Coast Guard Auxilary Assoc) Overview

Both of us have experiences in writing. Formal writing, journalism, or reviews. But no stories for children. We're even beginners in writing prose or short stories, but it was for grown-ups. So we were looking for some reference books on how to write a children's book. We ended with this book.
Write A Children's Book and Get It Published is a very good book. The book remind us on the basic preparations in writing books in general, incl how the industry works. But this book also tells us the many things to be considered when writing a children's book: the language, the format, the illustration, the theme, interesting subject, etc. This book explain everything with simple words, and I find it valuable. The writers of this book are a children's book writer, and a publisher. So you'll get perspectives from both sides. Perhaps some cases in the industry only applies in USA or Europe (as I live in Indonesia), but I believe the basic biz practice is the same (as I'm also close with book publishing world).

Introduction to Reference Work, Vol. 1: Basic Information Services, 8th Edition ReviewI've been a librarian for - jeees -- 32 years and looking at this current, eighth edition, cannot believe that Katz hasn't spent some of his royalties to edit this book down to a manageable number of essential resources and had the text redesigned to be more visually interesting and vibrant to help convey some of the fun that being a reference librarian is all about. The presentation is poorly presented, boring, tedious and zzzzzzzzzzz ... Oh, I'm sorry, I was looking through the text again. I must have dozed off, where was I?
Oh yes, as I was saying -- Reference work is fun! Don't let this book turn you off. If you enjoy talking to people, are curious and always find yourself asking: Who? What? When? Where? How? You're either a born reporter or a reference librarian and just didn't know it! Reference work is a holy profession, full of bright, cheerful and caring intellectual people; don't let this book get you down!
Katz is highly respected in the profession and knows reference resources inside and out. Unfortunately, for you, the reader, he has not done a good job to persuade McGraw-Hill to produce a very reader-friendly book.

The Art and Business of Photography ReviewI run a fairly small scale part-time photography business specializing in Equine and Pet Photography. I fell into this work almost by chance and a book like this would have been extremely helpful 7 years ago when I started out by winging everything I was doing, while it all worked out for me in the end if I had this book or one like it I would have had a lot less stress in the beginning.
Every year or so I go through a few books on the business of photography to help me with my business, inspire new marketing ideas and as a reminder of the things that need to be done to keep the business running smoothly.
This book provides a photographer who is looking to start their own business with a good idea of what they are getting into, what to expect and also provides links excellent industry resources.
