The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace ReviewI've always admired Gord Hotchkiss' ability to put into words things that I experience only as gut feelings. He did it again with this book. I've felt for a long time that B2B marketers are missing the boat when it comes to online marketing. This book crystalized why, while shattering many of the myths that are still accepted as conventional wisdom. After deconstructing how the buying process actually works from the buyer perspective, the discussion turns to a primer on the shift we're experiencing toward digital marketing and how to capitalize on it.
The book is based on a lot of quality research. As such, the conclusions have some heft. This is not one person's opinion about how to do things. It's a well-researched guidebook on how B2B buying actually works - and how to develop a B2B marketing approach that acknowledges this reality.
A smattering of topics covered:
- The myth of the buying funnel
- The critically important role that risk avoidance and emotional triggers play in buying decisions
- The different concerns of Doers (Influencers) vs. Buyers (decision makers) and how to ensure the needs of each are met
- The power of face-to-face (A compelling, if somewhat surprising, conclusion in a book about digital marketing)
- The role that online plays in buying decisions
- How a company's web site can be used as a force multiplier in the sales process
- How those who grew up with the Internet (Digital Natives) generally use technology differently than older people (Digital Immigrants), and the implications for marketers as the Digital Natives increasingly become the decision makers
On one hand, the book reads like a cautionary tale. A compelling case is made that those companies that miss the current shift to the digital marketplace are in for a bumpy ride. That may be frightening for some. On the other hand, the book also argues for taking a more personal and human-focused approach to marketing and communications in general. It's hard to be disturbed by that. In fact, I found it oddly comforting.
This book made me see the B2B market more clearly, gave me a framework to help understand it, allowed me to see things from the buyer's viewpoint (always valuable), and ultimately helped me to understand where things are headed in the not too distant future. I found it to be remarkably insightful and thoroughly enjoyable and therefore recommend it for any B2B marketer or student of human nature. The BuyerSphere Project: How Businesses Buy From Businesses in the Digital Marketplace Overview

Let Go To Grow: Escaping the Commodity Trap ReviewSo what do you do when your main business offering is in danger of becoming a commodity item? Do you desperately cling to ever-shrinking profit margins in hopes of a turnaround, or do you take a radically different approach and open things up? Those questions and answers are discussed in a new book called Let Go To Grow - Escaping The Commodity Trap by Linda S. Sanford and Dave Taylor. Lots of food for thought here...
Contents: Grow To Build Profits, Not Just Revenue; Commodity Markets Defined; It's All About Components; Creating Business Components; Integrate Your Business Components End-To-End; Expand Your Growth Space; Liberate Your Cost Structures; From Vision To Results - The Leadership Agenda; Achieving Measurable Productivity Improvements; Practical Implementation Of The Component Business Model; Gaining The Collaborative Edge - Building The Creative Company For The Creative Economy; Endnotes; Index
With the globalization of today's business environment, it's a strong likelihood that your business offerings over time will drift (or run) to becoming a commodity. The margins will shrink along with your rate of growth. It's at that point that companies either flourish or stagnate. Sanford and Taylor make the case that by opening up your business to the use of components, as well as allowing your business to become a component in the business of others, you can create a value web that causes you and others to build whole new businesses in unique ways that were not part of the "original" plan created by holding on tight. They use examples like Li & Fung, a player in the apparel industry who can do everything from design to delivery. As a result, companies like J. C. Penny can partner with them and dramatically improve turnover, delivery, and inventory levels, all at lower cost. That allows J. C. Penny to concentrate on retailing. Another example is UPS. Rather than looking at themselves as just a commodity player in the package delivery space, they turned their business into components that other businesses could plug into. Because of that, UPS becomes a critical partner for many companies looking to better manage logistics, inventory, repair, etc. It's this "letting go to grow" which is the theme of the book, and it certainly makes a lot of sense when you step back and look at where things are going.
Even though you may *think* your business isn't a target of commoditization, I'd be willing to bet you're not looking hard enough. Business executives owe it to themselves to read through this book and think about some restructuring that may be necessary to survive in the next few years...Let Go To Grow: Escaping the Commodity Trap Overview

Business Plans Kit For Dummies ReviewI had never bought one of these "Dummies" series books, I was a little embarrassed to, but I was wrong. Never had I read something in such "plain" english. I needed to prepare a Business Plan, and I needed to do it without spending a lifetime learning about it. This book helped me more then I thought possible. I only wish everything could be explained like this. I highly recommend it if a Business Plan is in your future for writing and you have no prior experience writing one.Business Plans Kit For Dummies Overview

Profit or Growth: Why You Don't Have to Choose ReviewThere has been a dearth of business books in recent years that has forced many organizations into a "Sophia's Choice" of sorts where they must select between the seemingly incongruous business objectives of strong profitability or sustained growth - but not both. However, the authors of the book Profit or Growth, state that these two business goals are not mutually exclusive and that the efforts to achieve both can be complementary. In fact, the writers combine both goals of profit and growth into a concept that they define as "continuous renewal." Showcasing extensive research, generated from world-class organizations, the book lays out a handful of strategies that demonstrate the viability of the "continuous renewal" process. Soundview likes this book because in addition to its novel premise, readers will benefit from new ideas around core business expansion while identifying new opportunities as well as how to integrate the sometimes disparate strategies needed to satisfy both. This book does an exceptional job of helping organizations understand and execute toward bringing in a harvest while still planting the orchard - all toward the ultimate goal of profitable diversification within any business environment.Profit or Growth: Why You Don't Have to Choose Overview

Indispensable Marketing Strategies - How to Outwit Your Competition, Attract and Retain Customers, and Multiply Your Profits - Powerful Marketing ... for Profitable Small Business Management ReviewAs a small business owner I wanted to study up on marketing techniques and this book was recommended. I wasn't looking forward to it; I figured it would be tough work forcing myself through some text book. But this book was great! In an easy-going style with a pinch of wry humour the author took me through the strategies and jargon of marketing. It has very intelligible diagrams and some cute cartoons too. I learned a lot and enjoyed it. It was like eating something that tastes great and then finding out that it's good for you!Indispensable Marketing Strategies - How to Outwit Your Competition, Attract and Retain Customers, and Multiply Your Profits - Powerful Marketing ... for Profitable Small Business Management Overview

Game-Changing Strategies: How to Create New Market Space in Established Industries by Breaking the Rules (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewReaders of business books on innovation have all been victims of the hype of doing new things and doing things differently. Of course we all know that doing new things and finding new ways of doing things can be sources of considerable value, with payoffs that go far beyond increased efficiency and continuous improvement. But simply eulogizing the companies that have made it big with a new business model (the IKEAs, Body Shops, Entreprise Rent-a-Cars and Southwest Airlines of the world) against formidable established competitors, is eye-opening but somehow insufficient.
Business model innovation - how a company changes key parts of the value chain to create new space in an established industry - is the subject of Professor Markides' new book. Remarkably removed from the common hype Markides emphasizes:
1.That implementing the new business model is harder than inventing it.
2.For a start-up, business model innovation is more obvious and easier than for an established company.
3.There are more business model innovators who fail than succeed.
4.An established company that decides to run a new business model, has to simultaneously manage degrees of differentiation and integration, synergy and competition with the existing business model and different ways of managing these can be successful
5.Established firms have various strategic options when responding to disruptive competitors with new business models
6.Established firms should themselves be innovative in their business models
And much more. The book is partly based on the author's own research of a large sample of business model innovators and is full of well-known and not-so-well-known case-examples, all well-written and with business arguments clearly articulated.
Of course the author understands that innovation is impossible without creativity and he counterbalances his "Creativity is not enough" Chapter 3, with his Appendix B - "How to enhance corporate creativity".
All in all a fine business book.

Superior Customer Value in the New Economy: Concepts and Cases, Second Edition ReviewI purchased this book as a classroom requirement for my MBA program. I found this book extremely easy to read with a wealth of information. Offering many examples, it is easy to see how the companies listed incorporated different strategies and policies to improve customer service and ultimately add value for the customer, the company and other shareholders. I found myself using this book as a reference source for research papers written for other classes taken later on in the program. This book is an excellent resource for any future business manager.

The Ultimate CRM Handbook : Strategies and Concepts for Building Enduring Customer Loyalty and Profitability ReviewThis is the third book on CRM I've read over the last year and it's certainly been the most useful.
The structure is a little different from other books I've seen on the subject. I guess you could read it end-to-end, but I've found it most useful just reading the section introductions and then dipping into the individual chapters as required. Being honest, I haven't even read all of the content. It's very comprehensive and some of the material just isn't relevant to my work. But the fact I can get to the parts that are relevant, quickly and easily, is what makes this stand out.

Coming from a business background, I also like level it's pitched at. Despite being pretty detailed at times the text is peppered with client examples to show the ideas are still grounded in reality.
So if you are looking for a broad reference source for CRM that puts the emphasis on business as much as CRM then this is certainly worth considering. The Ultimate CRM Handbook : Strategies and Concepts for Building Enduring Customer Loyalty and Profitability Overview

Supply Chain as Strategic Asset: The Key to Reaching Business Goals (Wiley Corporate F&A) ReviewThe supply chain is a firm's core asset, and perhaps its most important asset, and a firm is only as good or as bad as its supply chain. In this tightly packed 300-page volume Sehgal shows how important it is to have a top-down-driven approach to supply chain management and how important it is to link strategy and execution, from the board room to the very last delivery guy.
Vivek Sehgal has a penchant for Porter's Five Forces and Porter's three generic strategies, which form the backbone of his theoretical underpinning. Everything new after Porter is just old wine in new bottles. His reason for liking Porter's strategies is that they are genuinely generic. The more generic a strategy is the better it is for each firm to adapt a strategy to its own needs. Each firm must to find its own unique and specific strategy and its own and unique supply chain. That is at the heart of Sehgal's message.
The book serves three purposes. Firstly it thoroughly explains the importance of having a clear business strategy. Secondly, it even more thoroughly explains how this business strategy must be translated into a functional strategy, which is then engraved into the supply chain using a deployment strategy.
No strategy, however brilliant, produces results unless executed. In order to accomplish the goal a strategy is meant to achieve, a strategy needs a set of key attributes: It must establish the destination. It must establish the direction. It must drive cross-functional capabilities. It must drive a feasible plan. It must be articulated. It must be adaptable. Moreover, a strategy must work on several levels, in time, in function and in impact. A strategy must work as a guiding, driving force. Many firms however, loose sight of their strategy along the way or rather, fail to align it all the way through.
This is not a book that you can pick up at the airport and read on a long-haul flight and put into action on arrival. Nonetheless, it is a book that will make you think, and start wondering whether your business strategy is really in your supply chain or whether your supply chain is actually aligned with your business strategy at all. Are you driven by your strategy or by your supply chain? It is not a handbook in supply chain management, it is a book that using countless examples and anecdotes tells you that businesses are more than their strategies, businesses are more than their supply chains. Strategies and supply chains must come together for businesses to succeed.Supply Chain as Strategic Asset: The Key to Reaching Business Goals (Wiley Corporate F&A) Overview

The Keystone Advantage: What the New Dynamics of Business Ecosystems Mean for Strategy, Innovation, and Sustainability ReviewAs this book's subtitle correctly indicates, Iansiti and Levien explain "what the new dynamics of business ecosystems mean for strategy, innovation, and sustainability." They are quite correct when pointing out that, in recent years, in industries as different as personal computers and personal care products, "companies [have] leveraged multiple organizations in distributed supply chains, integrated technological components from a variety of business alliances, collaborated with a number of channel partners to distribute their products, and leveraged complementary services from banks, insurance providers, or retailers." As a result, many industries have been forced to create or become involved in a fully networked structure, one "in which even the simplest product or service is now the result of collaboration among many different organizations." (In fact, decades ago, American Airlines devised his "hub and spoke" strategy. However, this really is not what Iansiti and Levien have in mind.) For example, Microsoft and Wal-Mart have a decisive competitive advantage in large measure because they are "keystone" companies in their respective ecosystems. More specifically,
Both "of these firms understand that their fate is shared with that of the other members of their business network. Rather than focussing primarily on their internal capabilities (as many of their competitors did), they emphasize the collective properties of the business networks in which they participate, and treat these more like organic [in italics] ecosystems [end italics] than traditional supply chain partners. They understand their individual impact on the health of these ecosystems and the respective impact of ecosystem health on their own performance...[For that reason] "a new, holistic approach to strategy is critical to an increasingly broad range of firms in our economy as they face the new set of challenges and responsibilities created by competing in business ecosystems."
How? Given the evolution of business ecosystems which are analogous to biological counterparts, organizations today, regardless of their size or nature
(1) must decide if they are a keystone or niche "player" (Please see Part I)
(2) then formulate strategies appropriate to that role (Please see Part II)
(3) and finally, establish and build on one of three "foundations of sustainable performance in a business ecosystem" (Please see Part III)
"Keystone" companies such as Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Dell, and eBay create value within their respective ecosystems which is shared with other participants in that system. More specifically, they create high-value, sharable assets; leverage direct customer connections; create and manage physical and information hubs; support uniform information standards; create, package, and share state-of-the-art tools and building blocks for innovation; establish and maintain performance standards; build or acquire financial assets for operating leverage; reduce uncertainty by centralizing and coordinating communication, and reduce complexity by providing powerful platforms.
Obviously, few organizations can be (or should even attempt to be) a "keystone" or "dominator" company. According to the authors, keystone wannabes tend to pursue two quite different: "hub landlords" (e.g. Enron) extract as much value as possible from an ecosystem or ecosystem domain without integrating forward to control it whereas "hub dominators" (e.g. Apple) integrate vertically or horizontally to manage and control an ecosystem or ecosystem domain. Most organizations will correctly a strategy as a "niche" player by specializing in capabilities which differentiate them within an ecosystem domain. "Niche players are naturally dependent on other businesses. The essential step in defining a good niche strategy is therefore to analyze the firm's ecosystem and map out the characteristics of its key stone and dominator players." (Please see Chapters Six and Seven for a complete explanation of all this.)
All organizations involved in a given ecosystem must, of course, rigorously monitor but also take an active role in nourishing that system's health so as to promote and facilitate the leveraging of an enduring and evolving core. However, it remains for keystones to provide both the vision and the leadership needed, especially in response to market design, operation, and competition. They must also facilitate and support integration, innovation, and adaptation within their ecosystem. "This is the price that keystones must pay for their privileged position at the hub of a business network and as owners of enduring assets: Keystones [in italics] must [end italics] manage the health of their ecosystems as a key business strategy. The challenge for each niche player is to decide in which ecosystem to become actively involved with which keystones to be associated in a strategic alliance.
I wholly agree with Iansiti and Levien that "We are bound together by the nature of the relationships among products, technologies, markets, and innovation. Leveraging these relationships is critical to enhance firm productivity, to protect organizations from disruption, and to enhance their ability to innovate, evolve, and adapt. This means that no firm, product, or technology can be an island: No firm can afford to act alone, and no products can be designed in isolation." Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Christensen, Anthony, and Roth's Seeing What's Next: Using the Theories of Innovation to Predict Industry Change as well as Kaplan and Norton's The Strategy-Focused Organization: How Balanced Scorecard Companies Thrive in the New Business Environment. The Keystone Advantage: What the New Dynamics of Business Ecosystems Mean for Strategy, Innovation, and Sustainability Overview

The Age of Engage: Reinventing Marketing for Today's Connected, Collaborative, and Hyperinteractive Culture ReviewIf you have not had any (or very little) exposure to digital marketing, by all means buy the book and read it. However, for anyone who has had some experience with digital marketing the last 5 years, this book offers very little new thinking (unless you are really bad at your job).
While the book is full of examples, if flows poorly. The author's points seem to get lost in a somewhat poor structure, and too many points thrown at the user without a proper flow to it. The author should definitely look into pyramid consulting techniques in order to present better. And given the author's savvy in online marketing, it does make me wonder whether the other reviews are legitimate.
But again, if you are a CEO, or non-marketing exec, or an "old school" marketer, this books seems like a useful intro to you. But you should be out reading Techcrunch, Marketing 2.0, Mobilemarketer, Mashable etc etc on a daily basis, and you would not only learn just as quick, you'd stay more current. The Age of Engage: Reinventing Marketing for Today's Connected, Collaborative, and Hyperinteractive Culture Overview

The New Age of Innovation: Driving Cocreated Value Through Global Networks ReviewThe New Age of Innovation is good but miss-titled. This is not a book about how to be innovative. Rather the book advances an idea that all companies must face a world where they deal with customers individually and get their resources globally. The authors drive this home in a mantra of N=1 (there is one customer) and R=G (your resources are global). The N=1 R=G idea is cute and it is used throughout the book, but as you read the book N=1 R=G becomes the rational for everything and therefore nothing.
It is hard to give a book that covers such a breadth of important topics a mediocre review, but I have thought about this and come to the conclusion that this book is O.K. I am glad I read it as there are some good things here, just not to the level that I could heartily recommend it. If you are interested in these ideas and study the subject of enterprise strategy and management, then please buy this book as it will round out your experience. If you are looking for innovative ideas, then I am sorry this is not the book for you - in my opinion.
Besides the book not being about innovation, or really about how you drive co-created value, it is pretty good with some very good ideas. Prahalad and Krishnan start with an interesting premise - that all markets are not individual and that no company will have all the resources at its disposal to serve those individual markets. Put that way it provides a fresh way of thinking about global business. However that fresh thinking quickly devolves into a way of explaining a large range of business decisions from Wal-Mart to UPS, to GM to ICICI and others. I am always suspicious when a framework can cover such a diverse set of companies - not that the framework is poor, but rather that it is capturing something that we already know and have already dealt with. That is more the case in this book and the reason why it gets only 3 stars.
This book had the potential to redefine some basic tenants of corporate thinking - in other words extend beyond Treacy and Wiersema value disciplines. The N=1 R=G is a simple framework that requires blending multiple disciplines to delivery. However, the book does not do that - rather it advances the idea of intergration across all fronts without a target destination. This makes the book comprehensive, but it also makes it disjointed in some areas and therefore difficult to see how it would really apply to my company or my situation.
Strengths:
The presentation of these two ideas (customer centrality and global sourcing) is strength in that these issues are rarely discussed in an integrated fashion.
Incorporation of a comprehensive view of the enterprise including its business processes, analytics/information, information technology and social/managerial technologies. Few books have ever looked at the enterprise from such a multi-faceted view.
Chapter 6 on efficiency and flexibility, it should have been the second chapter of the book as it puts the N=1 R=G into a set of clear management decisions.
The book highlights the need for the interconnectedness of the issues involved. It continually points to the need for process connectedness, visibility and transparency. It also points out the need to address decisions that are often thought of as contradictory (chapter 6) and the tools in figure 4.3 (p. 129)
Weaknesses:
The discussion of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is bold in its vision but very weak in its implementation. (See Chapter 4 review) The book talks about ICT in a major way in three chapters and not the same way in any of them.
Using multiple titles and tags for roughly the same thing which makes it unnecessarily complicated. This is seen in the way the book tries to redefine issues like business process transformation, capabilities, components, change management etc. It would have been better to use standard terms and then talked about the new insight based on the ideas of the book.
It is true that India is a hot bed of innovation and growth but to imply that Indian companies are primarily the ones that get these ideas is a bit uneven. There are many innovative and market capturing companies in India (ICICI is one that we all need to study and understand). However, the authors keep returning to these companies as the prime examples of what success will look like. This refocusing, particularly on the Indian software industry, weakens the book as it gives the reader with the miss-impression that all I need is an educated, cheap and plentiful labor source and my problems are solved - that is too simplistic and undercuts what these leaders have done.
References as there is neither a single footnote nor source in the book, when several sections are clearly based on work that I have read before. I am not saying that they are copying these materials; rather some references would have been nice and more professional. The discussion of Li & Fung is an example as much of that material was covered in a Wall Street Journal article a few years ago.
The book appears to contradict itself in several areas. The discussion of IT throughout is one also the case examples can be viewed as contradictory, particularly the use of North American and European Companies whose actions can be just as easily explained using other frameworks (Wal-Mart, UPS, ING, etc)
CHAPTER REVIEW
On a chapter by chapter level there are some good ideas - the reason it is not a one star recommendation. So if you pick up the book here is where to concentrate and here is where to be on the lookout.
Chapter 1: The Transformation of Business is a good chapter that lays out the basic premise that the focus of value is on the `centrality of the individual'. At the same time the focus of the firm is on realizing that it must "focus on access to resources not ownership of them." This is not new news, but putting the two ideas together does spark some new thinking.
Chapter 2: Business Processes should have been a killer chapter and provided a basis for repositioning process in the internet era. It did not, first it defines processes as the expression of strategy - leaving out the customer which is interesting given that N=1. Instead of focusing on process, the chapter talks about IT and the layers of IT. The chapter has a good review of ICICI - an Indian financial services company.
Chapter 3: Analytics highlights the central role that information plays in serving customers as individuals using a global network. But rather than telling you how to use information, run the business based on information, it dwells on the analytics/visibility/transparency. The chapter misses a chance to redefine management by discussing the qualities of information rather than its application and impact.
Chapter 4 IT Matters is a call for component based systems and technologies. This chapter is the most disappointing as it is filled with generalized statements regarding what IT should do and be rather than how to deliver it. If you have read books about object oriented and component based development before then you have read much of this chapter. Sorry but this chapter reads like someone who has read a lot about IT and talks about IT but does not practice it - too theoretical and aspirational
Chapter 5: Organizational Legacies starts out like a gem by highlighting the need to understand the dominant language that forms the context and the basis for managerial points of view and change management. The first part of this chapter is good; the back half looks to redefine what the book says about IT from Chapter 4 and seeks to redefine change management practices which were not needed.
Chapter 6: Efficiency and Flexibility highlights the central challenge of implementing the ideas behind N=1 and R=G how to gain the efficiency needed to serve customers at a profit and be able to meet their changing needs and changing capabilities in the supply chain. This chapter dwells too much on it being a trade off, and again returns to IT as a disconnect.
Chapter 7: Dynamic Reconfiguration of Talent discusses the people issues which are critical to making this work. If this chapter did not exist, then the book would have been another diatribe for strategy and technology.
Chapter 8: An Agenda for Managers brings all these ideas together and highlights a 12 point agenda for managers to look at. The authors believe that N=1 and R=G will be here by 2015 - sorry to say that in many industries it is here now.
If you have read this far, then thanks for considering this review. It is a good book, one that I am smarter for having read, but it is not a great book and not one I can recommend you clear the decks to read.

The Hidden Power of Your Customers: 4 Keys to Growing Your Business Through Existing Customers ReviewIn the introduction to "The Hidden Power of Your Customers", Becky Carroll encourages readers to use a highlighter as they read. By the end of the book, I had more yellow highlighter throughout than untouched pages. The book is full of practical advice about unleashing the power of existing customers to: go from satisfied customers to ones with deep affinity, increase their LTV, spread word of mouth and drive referals. The book contains case studies, checklists, metrics and more. I particularly liked the core consept that brands spend the bulk of their marketing dollars on finding new customers and fail to unlock the value of existing customers. In this age when companies confuse followers or fans with true brand asdvocates, it is refreshing to read about a process that makes customers the focus. Not only do "Customers Rock" but so does this book. The Hidden Power of Your Customers: 4 Keys to Growing Your Business Through Existing Customers Overview

Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation ReviewAgree with others that this book is very well written. Easy to understand and reads quickly, which is notable for a book on a subject that could easily be made a much more complicated and technical conversation. Especially helpful are the 'pledges' at the beginning of each chapter that identify questions up front that the content in the chapter will address. Also helpful are the case examples at the end of each chapter.
From a content perspective, the book explores the main components of digital strategy, and is written in a way that is relevant to any size business, whether it be a large organization or a start-up. Personally, as a brand manager within a larger company, this book added depth to my basic understanding of digital marketing strategy and helped me better understand how it should be integrated into overall marketing strategy and execution.
However, since the digital (and especially social media) landscape has been evolving at such a rapid pace (and since the book was written), it would be great to see updates made to some chapters within the book to make it even more relevant.
Otherwise, this is a great book for those looking for an in-depth introduction to digital marketing principles and strategy, or even for those already familiar with digital marketing in their organization who would like to better understand how what they do fits into an overall digital marketing framework.Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation Overview

The Successful Marketing Plan: How to Create Dynamic, Results Oriented Marketing, 4th Edition ReviewI guess I'm really going against the masses with my 2-star review of this book since the authors claim that it was so successful it warranted a third edition, but I was sorely disappointed with my purchase and plan on returning it. The book opens up with a thorough and dry introduction about why *disciplined* marketing planning is so important. I can't say I was really sold on their main argument--which was basically that marketing can only be done well when it's totally comprehensive and systematic. Those are definitely good traits to adopt in any undertaking, but I just feel that this book is overkill.
The book touts its main benefit as reducing the complexity of coming up with a marketing plan to "just" a 10-step process. It then takes two chapters and about 75 pages just to outline only the first step of this process, called the business review, and describes in painstaking detail everything that the marketer or marketing consultant should do in order to get as thorough an understanding of the business as possible.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about doing my due diligence and developing a thorough understanding of the company I'm doing a marketing plan for, but creating a marketing plan in the manner that these authors describe would easily take over 300 hours of time.
What's more, I don't get the sense from this book that there is an overarching guiding theory into which all elements of the book can be placed in context. Rather, it seems the approach of the authors is to take every known idea from the canon of marketing and incorporate each idea into some step of the lengthy 10-step process.
In the end, I just feel like this book goes overboard with the requirements it demands of the "disciplined" and "comprehensive" marketer. I can see why they use the word disciplined to describe their approach since in my view it would be truly painful to endure it.
I was very interested to read the reviews of others on this book, and I was disappointed to find that I had the opportunity to be the first reviewer. I'll keep looking around for my dream "how to prepare a marketing plan" book, but in the meantime I've realized that the "disciplined and comprehensive approach" is not for me.The Successful Marketing Plan: How to Create Dynamic, Results Oriented Marketing, 4th Edition Overview

Pricing and Revenue Optimization ReviewPricing and Revenue Optimization fills the need for a rigorous yet accessible introduction to the field more commonly known as revenue management. The author presents key pricing decisions such as airline revenue management, markdown management, and customized pricing as constrained optimization problems. It is the only broadly accessible consistent treatment of these topics in one place. The intended audience is MBA and MS level students and managers with solid quantitative backgrounds. Linear programming, probabilistic modeling, and some calculus is used. This book neatly fills the space between the popular treatment in Cross's "Revenue Management" and the much more mathematical "Theory and Practice of Revenue Management" by Talluri and van Ryzin. The book is well written and presents plenty of real-world grounding as well as the necessary mathematics. It is written as a textbook but would also serve for any quantitatively-oriented analyst or manager wanting to know how math models can be used to improve pricing. As a textbook, it is a little short of problems and I would have liked to see chapters on forecasting and price-response estimation. It is the best available introduction to this important topic for the MBA-level student or practitioner.Pricing and Revenue Optimization Overview

The 86 Percent Solution: How to Succeed in the Biggest Market Opportunity of the Next 50 Years (paperback) ReviewWith regard to the meaning and significance of the title, Mahajan and Banga explain that 86% of the world has a per capita gross national product (GNP) of less than $10,000 per year. So what? Not only do those markets represent the future of global commerce; "they also present rich opportunities for companies that have the imagination and creativity to envision [consumers within those markets]. But you won't recognize these opportunities through the lens of the developed world. You won't reach these consumers through the market strategies that work in the 14 percent markets. Developing markets have no smooth superhighways, no established consumer markets, no distribution networks, and, in many cases, no electricity. Developing markets are younger, behind in technology (but rapidly catching up), and inexperienced as consumers. These markets are very different. Yet with creative solutions tailored to their distinctive characteristics, ...you can realize the rich opportunities of these 86 percent markets."
Mahajan and Banga have carefully organized their material within eleven chapters which range from a rigorous analysis of "the lands of opportunity" to a "Conclusion" in which they explain why the markets in underdeveloping countries "not to be missed." More specifically, they discuss what they describe as a "complex tapestry" of convergent civilizations in which there really do seem to be almost unlimited opportunities to increase both the standard of living and quality of life for hundreds of millions of consumers. The challenge for those companies which attempt to market various goods and services in those markets is to understand their unique characteristics. To me, it seems at east as important to understand what they are not as it is to understand what they are...or can (and will) become.
Here are two brief excerpts and then a checklist which, I hope, indicate the scope and depth of Mahajan and Banga's analysis.
"There is no Chinese market. There is a market in Shanghai, or in a neighborhood in Shanghai. There is no Indian market. There is a market in Mumbai or Chennai, or in their local neighborhoods. Developing countries are a collection of fragmented local markets in a country that is gathered loosely under a single flag." (Page 77)
"Think English is the language to know for business? Maybe not for long. Consider that Mandarin Chinese has the largest number of speakers in the world -- a billion, including second-language speakers. This is followed by English, with about half as many speakers, and then Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, and Russian. If you want to work with 86 percent of the world, you need to speak the languages of the 86 percent." (page 83)
Which strategies will be most effective when "taking the market to the people"? Mahajan and Banga suggest seven:
1. Position for the paanwalla (i.e. small shop)
2. Create multiple levels of distribution (e.g. Hindustan Lever's "Project Shakti" based a direct-to-home model involving self-help groups, each comprised of 10-15 underprivileged women)
3. Use distribution bubbles (i.e. carnivals, market days, and vans which come and go) to find customers where they are
4. Take the bank out of the branch (e.g. Citibank's use of vans and a network of 9,000 direct-selling agents, called "Citi Friends," who visit homes)
5. Develop on-the-ground insights (i.e. understand and adapt to local aND even neighborhood regulations and conditions)
6. Create distribution systems from scratch (e.g. a new distribution system, based on grassroots networks, which built a supply chain for a camel's milk dairy in Mauritania)
7. Use existing networks creatively (e.g. the "dabbawala system" in Mumbai, India, probably the world's most efficient lunch delivery system which collects 175,000 home-cooked meals from workers' homes and delivers them to their offices)
Thoughtfully, Mahajan and Banga provide a section at the end of each of the first ten chapters, "The 86 Percent Solution," which summarizes key points and facilitates subsequent review of them. Before concluding their brilliant book, Mahajan and Banga share these thoughts when explaining why numbers are on the side of the developing world: Population Equals Profits. "The transformation is just beginning. There will be hiccups along the way and further surprises over the next two decades as the next `Chinas' and `Indias' emerge. The only certainty is the the 86 percent markets are here to stay. These markets are young and growing. Even though they won't become developed tomorrow,,, they are the future. And the companies that can develop the right solutions to meet their needs will find a rich source of growth."
Who will derive the greatest benefit from Mahajan and Banga's book? In my opinion, they are decision makers in two different categories of companies: Those which now market or are about to market in underdeveloping countries, and, other companies which now do business with -- or plan to do business with -- those in the first category. I also think this book will be of substantial interest and value to public officials who are now actively involved with helping to support global commerce.
Congratulations to Mahajan and Banga on a brilliant achievement! The 86 Percent Solution: How to Succeed in the Biggest Market Opportunity of the Next 50 Years (paperback) Overview

Digital Engagement: Internet Marketing That Captures Customers and Builds Intense Brand Loyalty ReviewDigital Engagement: Internet Marketing That Captures Customers and Builds Intense Brand Loyalty
While I am an accomplished entrepreneur having owned three successful businesses I admit I was intimidated by trying to wade through the new and expanding world of internet marketing. There isn't a day in my life that I don't access the internet for one reason or another but I had not even scratched the surface when it came to utilizing the power of this beast to build my business. That is until I ran across Leland Harden's "Digital Engagement". This book not only laid out a path for me to navigate towards success with internet marketing it gave me tools that I implemented that very day that changed the course of my business, literally. I went from no presence (not even a website) to getting in front of 80,000 qualified customers and actually interacting with 33 of them that showed an interest in my store within 3 days and for only $20. Amazing. Needless to say the door has been opened and it is because of "Digital Engagement". I am personally purchasing a copy of it for my close friends that have a need for business expansion. When I purchased the book for myself I had an event planned in my store and was concerned because I had very little interest. I ended up with over 50 customers in the store and sales were through the roof. Thanks guys, thanks for brining the "world wide web" to my backyard and showing me how to work it!!
