Supply Chain Management for Retailing: 1E ReviewI personally think this is the best book on retail supply chain management available on the market. It's all but perefect, though.
To start with positive side of the book - the author integrates supply chain into much broader picture of retail reality and shows how the process starts - and it starts with the proper assortment management processes. And this is really a very important thing. It clearly deviates from the average book saying "measure KPIs,implement cross docking and you'll be fine". I absolutely loved this aspect of the book.
The most important adavantage for me is that the author shows us that supply chain is much more than management of orders, transport and stock. He includes assortment, mercandising and pricing processes into the supply chain structure too. Again, it differs significantly from the average book!
Yet another positive aspect of the book is to remind us one more time - processes always come first. Starting with assortment and going through all stages of supply chain, we start to understand that - to qoute the book - "Old Process + New Technology = Costly Old Process".
Mr Ray is a practicioner, so as you may expect, there is a lot of real-life examples, case studies, IT system vendors discussions etc. All of this is always done in a very structural manner to support the argument. Absolutely brilliant in particular in discussions concerning supply chain challenges! The author precisely explains the sources of problems and shows potential solutions.
Now, there are some serious deficiencies:
1. A lot of misprints, missing sources, footnotes, some poor graphics etc. If there will be next editions (which I sincerely hope!) this has to be changed.
2. One of the most important part of the product/assortment management process is the question of data management. This is one of the "hottest" topics in retail (and all FMCG) today. Unfortunately, this topic is only briefly discussed.
3. I was very negatively surprised approaching the end of the book. The author promised us a journey through many different categories to show us how the business side influence supply chain. Well, the promise gets fulfilled in grocery, partly in apparell section, but the rest is just a composite of few bullet points summarizing most important strategy & operations trends with no concrete references to supply chain.
4. What I missed in the book, was the discussion of retail organization internal politics. How do the buyers or category managers regard suply chain? What do they expect and what supply chain can expect from them? what about store operations? How should you divide responsibilities? What are the best practices? What are different categories characteristics?
Also keep in mind that the book is meant for India readers mainly - so often there are very basic discussions of theDeveloped countries retail markets.
To sum up - I recommend this book to everyone. If you are just starting your retail supply chain adventure or already have some experience, this book will be a great thing for you. For more advanced readers - you can easily skip some "light" chapters, but for sure it is a nice read at least for two reasons:
1.process thinking
2. invaluable India retail market case studies!Supply Chain Management for Retailing: 1E Overview

Lean and Agile Value Chain Management: A Guide to the Next Level of Improvement ReviewThis book DELIVERS! Let me start first by saying that I take a very jaundiced view of almost all of the "supply chain" concepts and best practices books on the market. I've worked in supply chain management for years, and certainly don't claim to be an expert, but most "expert" books on the subject usually fall well short of my expectations. All I want is a comprehensive book on supply chain that doesn't try to overwhelm me with the author's vast experience and education while leaving me either extremely bored or confused (or both). Finally, here is a book on supply chain that does what I expect. It is comprehensive (taking an end to end approach), it is very lucid, and it is written in such a way that you don't have to be a PhD in statistics or engineering to follow. The authors of Lean and Agile Value Chain Management are successful in walking that fine line, avoiding being too simplistic or, in the other extreme, going too deep in statistical mumbo jumbo. This book has very clear examples which anyone can follow which illustrate the lean and agile supply chain process from sourcing to end-consumer. And it covers all of the processes involved in a logical step-by-step manner. And it is clear when you read this book that the authors have real world experience. No ivory tower theoretical approach here, thankfully.
For anyone from master planners, forecast analysts, procurement analysts, high level management, to university students, I strongly recommend this book to reinforce your understanding of supply chain concepts and workflows and also give you a lot of new things to think about concerning the lean and agile approach to today's rapidly changing environment. In my role as director of education services at a large supply chain management company, I found this book to be very helpful.Lean and Agile Value Chain Management: A Guide to the Next Level of Improvement Overview

Supply Chain as Strategic Asset: The Key to Reaching Business Goals (Wiley Corporate F&A) ReviewThe supply chain is a firm's core asset, and perhaps its most important asset, and a firm is only as good or as bad as its supply chain. In this tightly packed 300-page volume Sehgal shows how important it is to have a top-down-driven approach to supply chain management and how important it is to link strategy and execution, from the board room to the very last delivery guy.
Vivek Sehgal has a penchant for Porter's Five Forces and Porter's three generic strategies, which form the backbone of his theoretical underpinning. Everything new after Porter is just old wine in new bottles. His reason for liking Porter's strategies is that they are genuinely generic. The more generic a strategy is the better it is for each firm to adapt a strategy to its own needs. Each firm must to find its own unique and specific strategy and its own and unique supply chain. That is at the heart of Sehgal's message.
The book serves three purposes. Firstly it thoroughly explains the importance of having a clear business strategy. Secondly, it even more thoroughly explains how this business strategy must be translated into a functional strategy, which is then engraved into the supply chain using a deployment strategy.
No strategy, however brilliant, produces results unless executed. In order to accomplish the goal a strategy is meant to achieve, a strategy needs a set of key attributes: It must establish the destination. It must establish the direction. It must drive cross-functional capabilities. It must drive a feasible plan. It must be articulated. It must be adaptable. Moreover, a strategy must work on several levels, in time, in function and in impact. A strategy must work as a guiding, driving force. Many firms however, loose sight of their strategy along the way or rather, fail to align it all the way through.
This is not a book that you can pick up at the airport and read on a long-haul flight and put into action on arrival. Nonetheless, it is a book that will make you think, and start wondering whether your business strategy is really in your supply chain or whether your supply chain is actually aligned with your business strategy at all. Are you driven by your strategy or by your supply chain? It is not a handbook in supply chain management, it is a book that using countless examples and anecdotes tells you that businesses are more than their strategies, businesses are more than their supply chains. Strategies and supply chains must come together for businesses to succeed.Supply Chain as Strategic Asset: The Key to Reaching Business Goals (Wiley Corporate F&A) Overview
