Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Optimization: Drive Traffic, Boost Conversion Rates and Make Lots of Money (Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Guides) ReviewThis SEO guide favors natural search over paid search. And half of the book is devoted to indirect topics.
This guide has some SEO good content but stops short. As Amazon points out, the book is illustrated, but the illustrations are not of SEO examples. And they're so faint and small as to be illegible. The book is missing examples of SEO in general. For example, what's the best way to work meaningful hypertext into a backlinked article? What's the best way to avoid a duplicate content penalty when creating a media room or distributing content?
Another issue with the book is the content which is semi-useful. There are lists and lists of resource links in the back but they have no descriptions. The chapter about psychographics is simplistic to the point of inaccuracy and isn't integrated with the rest of the book. The chapter on black-hat SEO is interesting but not overly useful. And there's a whole chapter devoted to long-tail keywords which combined may not surpass the results of primary keywords. The small chapter on conversion can't do the topic justice. The individual sections on dumping a server log to Excel and outbound links are intriguing but just plain confusing.
One more issue with the book is the lack of information, ex. on important HTML and page layout techniques that can boost SEO, on the fact that many search engines feed each other. Paid search content glosses over ad creation and omits bid strategy. The resource links in the back omit one of the major web analytics firms and all search engine monitoring sites.
While this book has some merit, it should have stuck with SEO specifically (not site development, psychographics, conversion, etc.) and provided more detail. As it is, it cannot be used as a sole reference. And the title's implication that the book can help the reader "make lots of money" is misleading. Even good SEO doesn't guarantee that.Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Optimization: Drive Traffic, Boost Conversion Rates and Make Lots of Money (Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Guides) Overview

Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics ReviewBrian Clifton's Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics should, for all intents and purposes, have the term "Advanced" in bold, possibly in a gigantic type font with fun colours and exclamation marks.
The first 3-5 chapters start innocently enough, and if you have been involved in web analytics or read any other material on the topic you will find it largely rehashes what you already know with a few nuggets of gold throughout. For instance, Brian's discussion as it pertains to Google's tracking of data and its privacy implications offers a wonderful metaphor relating to personal identifiable information, though his emphasis curiously seems to be trying to convince the reader, rather than positioning it as a tool that one can use to assuage stakeholders or individuals who are not sold on analytics.
Chapter 4, which aforementioned is innocent enough, gives one a glimpse of what is to come when Brian delves into a discussion on regular expressions (in order to filter data via GA's inline filter). If you are unfamiliar with a command line interface, advanced search expressions or anything of the sort, good luck. Even if you are, this section comes WAY out of left field and perhaps could have been saved for later, but the information itself is useful and I've been utilizing a number of the expressions ever since.
Chapter 7 is where this book really begins, and Brian starts it off by giving an in depth explanation of how Google tracks pages and summarily applies that logic to show how one can track things like dynamic URL's (rewriting them along the way), tracking file downloads, partially completed forms (cool stuff), and E-Commerce settings (with some neat tricks and workarounds for frequent issues and problems), Flash, and a whole host of things. All of this is done very clearly, but if you don't have some technical aptitude/background, you're going to struggle.
After the largely technical Chapter 7, Brian shifts back into a less technically focused discussion on best practices, including a fantastic write up on goals and funnels (including excellent examples for both). His knowledge and ability to write in a clear form is particularly visible when he discusses segmentation, which, while other authors have done a good job championing, Brian, at least to me, easily blows them out of the water. If you're not technically inclined, this is a great section, though you may still be a bit perturbed by the depth of the filter settings.
Chapter 9 is worth the purchase of this book alone, IF you can follow it. For reference, it's prefaced with the words "In this chapter I assume you have a strong understanding of JavaScript" and it holds true. In this chapter you learn a whole whack of cool things, and I literally have a pile of notes sitting on my desk as a result. Brian goes into everything from adding custom search engines to your GA results, tracking error pages and broken links and tracking referral url's from pay-per-click networks to differentiating links to the same page via site overlay. There's just tons of great tricks and tips in this section, and it's clear to anyone with a clue that not only does the author of this section have an understanding of Google that vastly exceeds your own, but that he can write about it in a clear, easy to understand (given the nature of the topic) way.
Chapter's 10 and 11 are also excellent, and one does not need to be overly technical to understand them. The former discusses KPI's in an extremely clear, helpful manner and even discusses creating reports based on specific job roles. In the process, Brian reveals a bunch of custom KPI's that he has created that are fantastic--which is to say, if you are reading this section do not skip a job role just because it's not applicable, there's lots of gold to be mined.
Chapter 11 focuses on real world tasks, such as diagnosing problem pages, delves deeper into funnels and how to use Google optimizer and is a great read that, no matter who you are, I promise you will learn something from.
In summary, if you are technically inclined and can follow some of the more esoteric topics, this book is an absolute must have--buy it right now. If you are not so technically inclined, there is still lots of value in chapters, 8, 10 and 11 which in my opinion still would merit a purchase, but of course, you are not getting the same value. So, as I said to begin this admittedly long review, this book is phenomenal, but there is one big caveat. You need to have some technical knowledge to truly appreciate how much valuable information it provides.

The Truth About Search Engine Optimization ReviewAs most people searching for SEO books, I was looking for the most up-to-date book possible. Even though this book claims to be 1st printed Feb 2009 the text references outdated "current events." Refers a few times to the "new" Indiana Jones movie and news about George W. Bush. Also refers to "Macromedia" Flash, but I think that was just a lack of software knowledge.
Don't get me wrong I learned a lot... A LOT!, but I question if some of this content is already outdated. Algorithms are always changing. The Truth About Search Engine Optimization Overview

Search Engine Optimization All-in-One For Dummies ReviewBruce Clay is one of the gurus of Search Engine Optimization, so I was very eager to read this SEO book. I teach SEO in San Francisco and also online at [...], and am always looking to the SEO leaders like Bruce Clay to learn.
The good - the book does have a lot of useful information. It is especially strong on the technical aspects of SEO, such as how fast your server responds to Google queries. This is a relatively new emphasis in SEO and one that many beginners are not yet aware of. His concept of siloing - putting like items into like directories is also a very good way to conceptualize how you should organize your website.
But, like so many SEO books, the book suffers from esoterica fatigue. Too much information, too many details, and not enough clear "big picture" guidelines into what should be done when. As I have learned from my own SEO students, they often need a simple step-by-step guide to SEO, and need to prioritize their efforts. Yes, your server response speed is important, but getting your home page TITLE tag correct is even more so.
I would recommend this book for experts and advanced SEO people. For beginners, Peter Kent's SEO book is a better bet.Search Engine Optimization All-in-One For Dummies Overview

Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Marketing: An Hour a Day ReviewI have known and followed David for a number of years. I have always admired his level of understanding for AdWords - both on the search and the display network.
When I read his book, I was impressed by the step by step walk through of all the little things that you do (or need to do) immediately after launching an AdWords campaign. I don't believe I've ever seen anyone list all those details and steps in one place.
A few of my favorite sections:
I highly recommend the section on defining personas under the researching keywords section.
Designing effective landing pages is thorough, solid.
It was refreshing to see the chapters on how to migrate your campaign into Yahoo and Bing because training and information on PPC strategies around those search engines is very hard to find.Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Marketing: An Hour a Day Overview

The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era (Advertising Age) ReviewI just began reading the book (Ch.4), and I cannot express how important it is for any advertising or marketing person to read this book, especially students.
Being an undergraduate advertising copywriting student, who is doing the crash reading on all the greats (including Luke Sullivan's Hey Whipple...), I am glad I invested and purchased #TheIdeaWriters.
It has so many fresh and recent example of how the industry has really changed, and it gives readers a feel for what will be considered great in the up-coming years. It is a modern reminder, and almost a challenge, to keep moving forward. I am still reading, but so far, I would compare this book to any of the great advertising books out there.

The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization (Theory in Practice) ReviewI am one who has been very outspoken about the more shady SEO practitioners and about the ridiculously overprices "courses" that are heavily promoted on the Internet. SEO has acquired some of the taint of huckster marketing because of that.
I hope this book helps eliminate some of that. There's no need to pay some self-styled "Internet Guru" hundreds or thousands of dollars for SEO secrets. There are no secrets: every concept, every "trick", every piece of advice is available on the Internet for free. Of course you have to find it all, you have to learn what things are outdated, what advice doesn't work - or you could find 99% here in this book.
Of course it's not for everyone. It assumes some technical knowledge or at least access to someone with that knowledge. As an example, at several points 301 redirects are used as the solution certain SEO issues. Although some minor direction is given about implementing these, you'd need more than is provided here if you were a neophyte - someone using Blogger or [...] isn't going to become proficient with Apache from reading this.
The only small complaint I can make is that sometimes the authors use too many examples, especially for the more basic concepts at the beginning of the book. However, too many is far better than too few, so I won't complain too much. I definitely can't complain that they left anything out: this could serve as a course book for a SEO class.
I'll be recommending this strongly. The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization (Theory in Practice) Overview

Google Analytics 2.0 ReviewI have read a ton of guides and information on Google Analytics, have taken a 6 week training course (provided by ROI Revolution who happen to be mentioned in this book as it would have it) and have used it for my companies sites as well as some of my clients. I had never read the first version of this book due to the not-so-flattering reviews of it so I decided to take a look at the latest version to see what it had to offer and if it had any useful content I had missed.
After reading it I would say that it is a useful basic guide for anyone getting started with Google Analytics as well as for those looking to brush up on their knowledge and to have a handy guide. There are also some solid, advanced topics they cover in the book such as regular expressions, advanced filters, as well as many side bars and notes during chapters. However, some of these advanced topics feel like they have been thrust upon the reader under the assumption that the reader already has some understanding of some of the advanced topics. I feel as there was not enough back-story to properly introduce some of their advanced topics and many times the location of these advanced topics messed with the flow of the book; they were introduced at times when the section of the book you were reading was rather basic.
The flow of the book (and the interesting tone at some points) seemed a bit off to me and one of the biggest things in Google Analytics was completely left out or barely even touched upon and that was setting up tracking for an E-Commerce site. There is a lot that goes into this (though it is not necessarily difficult but there are many different variables and codes you will need to know and utilize) and you truly need to assess your website and how it is structured before setting up the tracking code, the hidden form and some of the other utm functions (too little time and space to explain all that here). I was very surprised, and quite dissapointed actually, this was completely left out as it it really is a huge part of Google Analytics. They also did not mention or explain many of the other different variables and codes that allow you to more fully take advantage of Google Analytics and make it work just right for you and your business.
Not a bad basic guide to have handy for understanding the reports and some other things but really surprised at how much they left out for the sake of some of the really basic stuff they left in or espoused upon way too much. There are other resources you will need to truly grasp the whole setup process for more complex websites; this book makes it all seem so simple and basic as it doesn't explain that all too well.Google Analytics 2.0 Overview

Internet Marketing From The Real Experts ReviewTo me, this book presented itself as a collection of articles (poorly edited in some respects) about affiliate marketing for the most part.
The title should have been "Affiliate Marketing From The Real Experts".
The book is an easy read, as most of the articles are pretty short in nature, covering a wide variety of topics...but none in depth. If you're getting started in affiliate marketing, this might be a good "primer" of sorts...but as a resource you'll constantly refer to, in my opinion this book gets low marks.Internet Marketing From The Real Experts Overview

Blogging Heroes: Interviews with 30 of the World's Top Bloggers ReviewI found "Blogging Heroes" to be a really inspirational book that introduces the reader to many of the pioneers of blogging. As someone who is not a hard-core technical person, it was refreshing to learn the variety of blogs and get a glimpse into their world from the inside. You will probably recognize several of the blogs and enjoy finding out their origins and what motivates the people that breath life into them.
Some of the blogs profiled started as magazines first; others were born online. Some are run professionally by trained journalists; others are run as hobbies during spare time. All of the profiles, though, were interesting. I often found myself at the end of each chapter thinking, "That is so cool. What that person did!"
As you read the book, you'll easily notice patterns in the advice, motivations and other factors that were keys to these bloggers' success. By the end of the book, you'll have a very concise list of what to do if you want to get started blogging (or improve your current blog).
Michael Banks style is great. "Blogging Heroes" is very easy to read with each of the 30 chapters devoted to one interview. I read the book one or two chapters each night before bed. It was perfect for that kind of reading- chapters are under 10 pages long; so, you can always finish one in about 10 minutes.
I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn more about the world of blogging from a personal level.Blogging Heroes: Interviews with 30 of the World's Top Bloggers Overview

Outrank Your Competition: 50 Online Marketing and SEO Tips for Small Businesses- Learn How to Get More Traffic, Get More Business and Get More Customers ReviewIf you do not have the time or patience to read 500 page tomes on SEO, the history of computers, or what have you, this is the book for you. This has all the information you need presented in a clear, easy to read format. All the steps you NEED to take to market your business on the internet are listed here. The formatting of the book is a stroke of genius and one of it's strongest features. It is structured as 53 individual "Tips". You do not have to read the entire book to start acting on it's lessons. You can act on each tip individually. And you do not have to read the tips in the order in which they are listed. You can choose the tips that you feel are most relevant or important to your business, and go from there. This is amazing because we all know how busy we all are and how fragmented our timetable can be. It is difficult to have hours of free time to read books when you are running a business. Instead, it can be beneficial to be able to read short sections when and where you can without the need for a major time commitment. The tips are easy to understand and follow, they do not require massive technological knowledge or skills. Anyone can read and understand the tips without the need for extra research. Following the advice is easy too, no need for special skills or equipment. Overall I highly recommend this book for all business owners and managers. Marketing in the Age of Google: Your Online Strategy IS Your Business Strategy ReviewAlthough overall a book with a lot of tips, the author does not explain things as well as she could. For instant, she starts talking about Google Trends and doesn't tell us where to find it online (I guess there's Google for that ;). That said, there are a lot of good gems she shares. Here are some:
-Searchers click on organic results 85% of the time
-Companies connect with searches in two ways: Paid and Organic
-Longer search queries = fewer paid results appearing to the searcher
-Videos and images draw users away from the paid search column
-50% of searchers will see the 7th search result
-100% of searchers look at the first organic result; 50% look at the first paid result
-Increased organic results = increased brand awareness
-organic results last over time, whereas paid results stop the second you stop paying for them
-Searchers click on a brand 92% of the time when a brand is in both paid and organic results
-A search is on avg. three words long; nearly 25% are only one word
-Women are more deliberate in reading search results
-A #1 ranking is less important than people think. If you rank in the top 3 to 4 results and have a more compelling title and description, you may own the click
-Searchers don't even look at the entire title. They look at the left half of it
-Remember that every page of your site is a potential entry for visitors
-The days of normal search results that everyone sees the same are now over
-YouTube is the second largest search engine
-Results that contain both video and images, searches start with that first, then go above, and then below in their scanMarketing in the Age of Google: Your Online Strategy IS Your Business Strategy Overview
