The Six Immutable Laws of Mobile Business ReviewMobile phone technology is ascendant. With billions of subscribers across the globe and more signing on every day, it is the technology of today and tomorrow. Japanese firms are by far the leaders in the thriving "mobile market." Three experts on Japan's cellphone industry - Philip Sugai, Marco Koeder and Ludovico Ciferri - explain why, providing an in-depth, insightful report on where mobile is headed in the years to come. They also discuss six principles that mobile carriers and service providers around the world can learn from and may want to follow. getAbstract recommends this book - with its informative foreword by Martin Koelling, the Japan correspondent for the Financial Times Germany - as a worthy reference guide for professionals in the mobile arena. In this area, as Japan goes, so goes the globe. The Six Immutable Laws of Mobile Business Overview

Mobile Commerce : Opportunities, Applications, and Technologies of Wireless Business ReviewThis is a broad treatment of M-commerce and is aimed at a broad audience of business and technical readers. Usually books of this nature are mediocre because of the trade-offs compromises in scope and content that need to be made to accommodate a wide audience. In the case of the book, though, it isn't the case.
First, the book is organized by (1) Business opportunity, (2) Applications, (3) Technology, (4) Issues and (5) Directory of M-Commerce Applications. The first four sections are both insightful and invaluable. The directory of M-commerce applications, in my opinion, does not add any value to the book because information of this nature changes so rapidly that it's inaccurate before a book is even published.
What I like about the book is the even treatment of opportunities that are inherent in M-commerce, including some insights into why Europe does not have the advantages that normally come from being early adopters (in spite of the pessimists who cite a "two year head start" while ignoring the U.S. leadership in technology implementation when we do get around to it), and the interesting view of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), which many believe to be just an interim - the author advises to put resources and effort into WAP and make it part of a business strategy if you want to be an M-commerce player.
The survey of technologies and standards are also useful, even if given somewhat superficial treatment. The value is you are exposed to all of the factors and considerations with which to make informed decisions or gain an understanding of the M-commerce landscape. In this respect the applications and technology sections of the book can be viewed as a primer.
Overall, this is an excellent book for learning about M-commerce from business and technical points of view because it provides a context and keen insights in both domains.Mobile Commerce : Opportunities, Applications, and Technologies of Wireless Business Overview

Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Review

At the very end of the book, the author quotes James Madison as carved into the marble of the Library of Congress: "...a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." And there it is--Howard Rheingold has documented the next level of the Internet, in which kids typing 60 words a minute with one thumb, "swarms" of people converging on a geospatial node guided only by their cell phones; virtual "CIAs" coming together overnight to put together massive (and accurate) analysis with which to take down a corporate or government position that is fradulent--this is the future and it is bright.
As I go back through the book picking out highlights, a few of the following serve to capture the deep rich story being told by this book--breakthroughs coming from associations of amateurs rather than industry leaders; computer-mediated trust brokers--collective action driven by reputation; detailed minute-by-minute information about behaviors of entire populations (or any segment thereof); texting as kid privacy from adult hearing; the end of the telephone number as relevant information; the marriage of geospatial and lifestyle/preference information to guide on the street behavior; the perennial problem of "free riders" and how groups can constrain them; distributed processing versus centralized corporate lawyering; locations with virtual information; shirt labels with their transportation as well as cleaning history (and videos of the sex partners?)--this is just mind-boggling.
Finally, the author deserves major credit for putting all this techno-marvel stuff into a deep sociological and cultural context. He carefully considers the major issues of privacy, control, social responsibility, and group behavior. He ends on very positive notes, but also notes that time is running out--we have to understand where all this is going, and begin to change how we invest and how we design everything from our clothing to our cities to our governments.
This is an affirming book--the people that pay taxes can still look forward to the day when they might take back control of their government and redirect benefits away from special interests and back toward the commonwealth. Smart mobs, indeed.Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Overview

The Ultimate Web Marketing Guide ReviewI have developed several hundred websites over the last decade, optimized them for Google, and have made millions for my clients. So while this book didn't offer much to me in the way of new ideas, it's easily the best all-in-one guide ever written for beginning and intermediate web marketers.
In the introduction, Michael Miller points out that the book intentionally doesn't get too advanced on things like search engine optimization. Ideally you can purchase a few other books related to SEO, site structure, and writing copy. Otherwise, this book does a terrific job laying out the foundation.
The most interesting aspect of this guide is that it explains everything without being overly technical. More importantly, the book is incredibly thorough. Miller breaks down what web marketing entails, how to create a marketing plan, how to analyze your results, and even how to budget yourself.
The guide leaves no stone unturned. Someone new to marketing will learn everything from tips on having a site designed, paid web advertising campaigns, blogging, newsletters, and even promotion on social networking sites like Facebook. He not only offers suggestions, but provides plenty of links to sites with web tools to help you. The later chapters on mobile marketing for iPhones and similar gadgets are worth their weight in gold. Miller has seen the writing on the wall, and I have to admit that the five chapters on marketing for cell phones gave me plenty of new ideas.
As an expert at Search Engine Optimization and getting sites to rank well on Google, I was genuinely surprised at just how much the author knew about SEO. There were more than a few techniques that he could have included, but his suggestions were surprisingly on the money.
I've never heard of the author before, but I'll concede that he knows his stuff. If you're a seasoned web marketer, the book may not bring much to the table aside from the chapters on mobile marketing. But if you're a business owner, or not advanced at online marketing yet, this book is a must-have. To learn more about where this book starts you off, read "Ca$hvertising" by Drew Whitman for tips on writing copy, and "Letting Go of the Words" by Ginny Redish to make your website easy to read and navigate. The Ultimate Web Marketing Guide Overview

Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices ReviewThis book will take a flash developer a long way towards publishing applications on mobile phones. I didn't see anything on utilizing web services (something that is easy to do with flash lite 2.x) nor how to create .cab files (which was why I actually bought the book), but it covers just about everything else to a good level of working depth.
I wouldn't suggest this book to someone without any flash actionscript experience (or at least some object oriented programming experience) but you don't have to be a comp. sci. major either. Well written and not too witty (some programmer books can read like geek joke books) this book approaches the flash mobile development process from a practical hands on stance which works well with those who like to get their hands dirty while learning.
Strongly recommended reading for next gen phone app development in flash.
