My husband has a 2-inch thick, 3-ring binder of many of the previous columns and newsletters. Her writing is concise, focused, but never dull, and so are her blogs.
Debbie was one of the first to recognize the potential of corporate blogging, and it was a natural fit.
Debbie Weil's Corporate Blogging Book is an outstanding example of what a genuinely helpful non-fiction book should be.
It begins with a "fast read" chapter that gets your attention: "Top Twenty Questions about Corporate Blogging." She avoids ground already covered, and focuses on corporate blogging objectives and objections.
Those who want to introduce blogging to their firm will appreciate the way Debbie candidly addresses reasons for corporate hesitation, and shows how to overcome frequently-heard objections.

The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship ReviewThe Bad - Like all of the Portable MBA series, the book provides a limited and somewhat superficial coverage of the topic. It will not replace a good entreprenuerial course in an excellent MBA program.
The Good - Having been involved in four failed and one successful entrepreneurial ventures in the past 15 years, I can tell you with a great deal of certainty that there are many hidden gems in the book that will save you (potentially) years of wasted efforts and large sums of money. One example: if you are planning a business venture, and you cannot name specific companies, and specific individuals in specific companies, as part of your target market, then you have not performed due dilegence and are not ready to begin a business venture. Vague target markets such as "the public" or "somebody and some large telecomm company" are the sure road to failure.The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship Overview

A unbiased view on risk analysis, checks and balances on how the industry works and answering significant questions like scaling up strategy. His focus on emerging markets especially Asia was insightful for me. His ability to render ideas in a very versatile, structured and intuitive way connecting different pain points in the entrepreunerial world was superlative. He has interviewed and presented the use cases of different VC start-up associations which also gives us an insight into how the VC thinks. Mitra structures Entrepreneur Journeys as a series of interviews with people who have started businesses and willingly (or unwillingly) went without massive funding for the first part of their histories. The ranges of personalities are rather astonishing... everything from veterans of startups who have "been there, done that" to youngsters who happened to be at the right place at the right time, and organically grew an idea into a money-generating website. Some of the individuals couldn't get a venture capitalist to listen to them, and others decided not to go that route in order to retain control. But in all cases, these entrepreneurs were able to successfully negotiate that tightrope between growth and funding.
While I learned a lot from each of the interviews, I also found Mitra's commentary quite valuable. She points out a number of flaws in our current VC mindset that cause many good companies to die off too early. Running a company for the first time is hard, and mentoring is even more valuable in many cases than money. Normal VC arrangements don't do a good job in close mentoring. Instead, it's a push to build up the value so the VCs can cash out. Angel investors are more likely to work closely with the business, helping them reach their potential without sacrificing the longer-term potential of the business. Very valuable advice...
If you're starting your own business in the technology industry, Mitra's book might well give you some perspective on initial funding that you may not have considered. Oh my aching head!
Fortunately, Gene Landy has summarized all the above and more into language understandable by people not attorney's, added 38 juicy contracts and forms and authored a book you need, now: "The IT / Digital Legal Companion: A Comprehensive Business Guide to Software, IT, Internet, Media and IP Law".
I've been reading up on Software as a Service, chapter 13, and in 24 pages Gene did an excellent job of summarizing what you need to know about SaaS from a legal point of view. This book, published in June, is very up to date, logically organized and includes the seasoned judgment of a practicing IT attorney.

The book makes a big promise with, "The Complete Handbook for Launching a Company for Less," and "$100,000 in savings," but if you stick with the program, it works!
Obviously, it's impossible to create a comprehensive book of business best practices because every business has its own variables, but chapter by chapter, this book tackles everything you need to know - in order - for starting a business and growing it successfully.
She breaks down even the most complicated topics - like financing a business with loans or with investors - in plain English and gives step-by-step advice to maximize your upside and minimize the risk of starting a business. This book definitely explores "How to Finance a Startup" in a lot more detail than any other book I've come across. She has 14 sources beyond the normal VCs, angel investors, and SBA loans - and shows how to structure sweat equity with vendors and partners, etc.
I wish everything in life came with this kind of manual. This is the kind of reality-based textbook that university entrepreneurship programs should be using.
Every chapter begins with strategy, then breaks down tactics, then specific recommendations for templates, tools, software, and websites. You can tell that the author has actually used the tools because she even makes recommendations on how to get the most out of them - and how to get a deal.
Every chapter contains do-it-yourself guides - and that's where a lot of the savings comes in. The Branding, Marketing, PR, and Advertising chapters are so much fun! Brainstorming a brand and names for your business, templates for creating your own press releases - all very helpful.
Even for small business owners who have been in business for years, this book is a great quick reference guide for growing a business - tackling sales and revenue growth.

I liked this book. I'm not a fan of online retailing. But it can be done, and if a book does a reasonably good job introducing the reader to some good information on the subject, then I feel obligated to write a short review and post it on Amazon. This book is well written, well outlined & organized, and fills a void in the literature available on online retailing.
A few years ago I read and reviewed Unofficial Guide to Starting a Business Online (Unofficial Guides). I think I gave that book a 4-star as well. It did not fair as well with some other reviewers. But I think they were unjust. The instant book being reviewed probably could be called "Part II" of that book in my humble opinion. It adds information and updates information so the reader in 2009 is pretty informed on the topic of setting up a retail sales site or presence online today.
The Table of Contents (TOC) for this book is quite detailed. It will tell you exactly what is covered in this nice little book. I encourage you to take a look at the Search Inside feature Amazon offers for this book. It is there you can see the TOC for free.
Four other books that will probably interest you if you are into online retail sales are: Sell on Amazon: A Guide to Amazon's Marketplace, Seller Central, and Fulfillment by Amazon Programs, Make a Fortune Promoting Other People's Stuff Online: How Affiliate Marketing Can Make You Rich, ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income, & craigslist 4 Everyone. They will supplement the material covered in the instant book being reviewed.
