Record Label Marketing ReviewBefore I got into the music industry I read every book out there that had anything to do with the business. After years of working I realized only a select few of those many many books were accurate. This book, you can tell, is written by people who know the industry from an inside perspective. Most other books i've read are from authors who don't really have a clue other than what they've heard. This book is a testament to the "old industry" before Steve Jobs and MySpace hit the scene. It would probably find the authors well to update the book with more information about what's going on NOW. If your serious about managing someone's career in the music business I recommend three essential books: Record Label Marketing, The Future of Music, & Legal Aspects of the Music Industry.Record Label Marketing Overview

The Nonprofit Handbook: Management (Wiley Nonprofit Law, Finance, and Management Series) ReviewIf you have a management issue that needs attention in your nonprofit organization, make this book your first stop. It covers a multitude of relevant nonprofit management topics, including HR, fundraising, finance, IT, etc.
I say FIRST stop, however, because the book is probably not going to provide you with detailed enough information. Some topics, like unrelated business income, are treated quite exhaustively. Others, like the chapters on accounting and on how to solve a financial problem in a nonprofit organization, were pretty light. (In the latter case, most of the chapter is spent on cutting expenses, while the ultimate solution--increasing revenues--got only a page.) Each chapter, however, has a bibliography at the end which will direct you to further resources. This was the main value of the book for me.

It is both a guide and a reference work. It offers listings of many archival sources that allow for access to and affordable use of all kinds of images and music. It offers a primer on copyright, covering relevant issues related to archival use such as public domain content, internet licensing, moral rights, most-favored-nations clauses, music synchronization and master use licenses, and fair use. It also covers frustrating and sticky issues that arise when acquiring materials such as inability to gain access to public domain content.
It engages the reader in an exploration that works for any of the creative arts--a discussion of ethical issues related to the use of other's content in a manner that is true to its original meaning, mission, context, and purpose.
And the book presents an inside/out perspective of the business of filmmaking and the complexities of its intellectual property issues. The authors accomplish this perspective through the use of interviews and roundtable discussions with well-established filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, insurance executives, and supervisors and managers of rights in the music industry. The work also contains a thought-provoking commentary on what copyright has become and of what it should be and why. This discussion impels filmmakers to actively engage in the current dialogue about a concept of copyright that would both protect their own and others' creations, secure current access to archival materials, and increase the amount of archival content that is accessible in the future.

If you're one of my competitors, you're going to read this review, probably buy the book, learn all the secrets on how to get partnerships with Fortune 500 companies, and then go after all the deals I'm about to close.
This book tells you step by step how to analyze your business product strengths, how to figure out who would be your ideal partnership targets, and then how to go out and get them. The only thing that Ron Kunitzky doesn't include is a silver platter.
Whether you are running a big, medium sized or small business, there is priceless information in every chapter of this book that will lead to more sales and profits. It took me over a week to read this thing. After every page I would have to stop and write down another idea on how I could use Kunitzky's principles to further my business plan.
One second thought, do me a favor. Forget what you just read. This book stunk. The secret to my past business successes is finding new resources like this and then not telling anyone about them. If by some chance I inadvertently succeeded in peaking your curiosity and you happen to buy this book, at least promise me you will keep it to yourself.

Oh my aching head!
Fortunately, Gene Landy has summarized all the above and more into language understandable by people not attorney's, added 38 juicy contracts and forms and authored a book you need, now: "The IT / Digital Legal Companion: A Comprehensive Business Guide to Software, IT, Internet, Media and IP Law".
I've been reading up on Software as a Service, chapter 13, and in 24 pages Gene did an excellent job of summarizing what you need to know about SaaS from a legal point of view. This book, published in June, is very up to date, logically organized and includes the seasoned judgment of a practicing IT attorney.

CLEP Principles of Marketing w/ CD-ROM (REA) -The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (CLEP Test Preparation) ReviewThis book with the CD ROM is an excellent resource for the Marketing CLEP. I know there's a lot of reviews on here who says all you need to do is skim the book in order to pass the test. Not true at all. If you have never taken a marketing class before and you have very little concept about marketing, i would suggest that you study this book as much as you can to get familiar with all the theory and concepts that you will find on the test. My advice, read all nine chapters and highlight important parts (the chapters are extremely short). There are 3 sample test, 100 questions each. If you haven't taken any marketing before, like me, study those questions and explanations like a mad man and make sure you understand every single one of them and why each answer is right or wrong. I studied for two weeks non-stop and got a 65% (you need a 50 to pass) so believe me, its not as SIMPLE as some reviewers make it out to be. If you study that book THOROUGHLY, it will give you enough of an understanding of the theories in order to pass. Just as a precaution, there's 100 questions on the actual test, u don't need to get 50 questions right to pass. Actually, if you get 50 questions right out of all 100; with the way it's set up, you're score would be a 43% (FAILED). Lowest score you can get is a 20 and the highest you can get is an 80. Study enough and try to get as many questions correct. Be THOROUGH.
