The Way of the VC: Having Top Venture Capitalists on Your Board ReviewI read the book from a budding entrepreuner's point of view. This book provides us with thoughtful insight into the workings of the VC industry. The significant value I found was the focus on emerging trends and markets. He has put the experience of several VC-entrepreuner success stories into this book in a very refreshing frame. A unbiased view on risk analysis, checks and balances on how the industry works and answering significant questions like scaling up strategy. His focus on emerging markets especially Asia was insightful for me. His ability to render ideas in a very versatile, structured and intuitive way connecting different pain points in the entrepreunerial world was superlative. He has interviewed and presented the use cases of different VC start-up associations which also gives us an insight into how the VC thinks. I recommend this for anyone building his start-up.The Way of the VC: Having Top Venture Capitalists on Your Board Overview

Entrepreneur Journeys: Bootstrapping: Weapon Of Mass Reconstruction (Volume 2) ReviewHaving been near the front lines of the dot-com boom (and bust), I remember how much money was being thrown around at ideas that were utterly ridiculous. And if you could get venture capitalists to fund you long enough, you could then shift to an IPO and cash out for big bucks. Those days are gone, and now you have to be much more self-sufficient to get yourself started and maintain your momentum. Sramana Mitra looks at a number of entrepreneurs who have gone the bootstrapping route with great success in her book Entrepreneur Journeys: Bootstrapping: Weapon Of Mass Reconstruction. This is a good source of personal stories and input on how to do it on your own without giving up control of your idea and hard work.
Contents:
Prologue
Doing More With Less: The Real VCs Of Silicon Valley; Fund Envy; Bootstrapping, Montana Style (Greg Gianforte - Right Now)
Getting Started with Little or No Capital: Passion and Leverage (Cree Lawson - Travel Ad Network, Beatrice Tarka - Mobissimo), Barack Obama's Finance Lesson (Om Malik - GigaOM, Rafat Ali - paidContent, J. R. Johnson - Virtual Tourist, Guillaume Cohen - Veodia, Wayne Krause - Hydro Green Energy); Weapon of Mass Reconstruction (Scott Wainner - SysOpt & ResellerRatings, Ramu Yalamanchi - hi5)
Validating The Market - On The Cheap: Carts Ahead of Horses (Murli Thirumale - Ocarina, Manoj Saxena - Webify)
Resurrecting The Dead: Silicon Lazarus (Lars Dalgaard - SuccessFactors)
Epilogue
Mitra structures Entrepreneur Journeys as a series of interviews with people who have started businesses and willingly (or unwillingly) went without massive funding for the first part of their histories. The ranges of personalities are rather astonishing... everything from veterans of startups who have "been there, done that" to youngsters who happened to be at the right place at the right time, and organically grew an idea into a money-generating website. Some of the individuals couldn't get a venture capitalist to listen to them, and others decided not to go that route in order to retain control. But in all cases, these entrepreneurs were able to successfully negotiate that tightrope between growth and funding.
While I learned a lot from each of the interviews, I also found Mitra's commentary quite valuable. She points out a number of flaws in our current VC mindset that cause many good companies to die off too early. Running a company for the first time is hard, and mentoring is even more valuable in many cases than money. Normal VC arrangements don't do a good job in close mentoring. Instead, it's a push to build up the value so the VCs can cash out. Angel investors are more likely to work closely with the business, helping them reach their potential without sacrificing the longer-term potential of the business. Very valuable advice...
If you're starting your own business in the technology industry, Mitra's book might well give you some perspective on initial funding that you may not have considered. And given what's at stake, you will want to take the couple of hours you'll need to read this.Entrepreneur Journeys: Bootstrapping: Weapon Of Mass Reconstruction (Volume 2) Overview

Due Diligence for Global Deal Making: The Definitive Guide to Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions, Joint Ventures, Financings, and Strategic Alliances ReviewDue Diligence for Global Deal Making is one of the most enlightening and comprehensive books of its kind. Editor and contributor Arthur Rosenbloom has identified a group of thoughtful, experienced due diligence practitioners who describe the process from seven different points of view. The process is covered both from an in-bound and an out-bound standpoint. Despite the diversity of perspectives, the book maintains a consistent style and voice and refrains from undue repetition.
Each of the seven substantive chapters looks at a business using a slightly different lens: strategic, operational, financial and accounting, legal, tax, organizational and, oddly but perhaps most interestingly, the Internet. Scattered through the chapter are cautionary tales of what can go wrong in the real world if the practitioner or the client cuts corners. At the end of each chapter is a series of charts and lists which sets forth the subjects of investigation, often with indications of where to find the information or how it is important to the evaluation of the target.
For anyone who has to conduct, supervise or coordinate due diligence, this overview is remarkably helpful. For the young attorney, accountant or business strategist, Due Diligence provides a veritable Bible for his or her own due diligence. But more importantly, the book informs the reader how the information gleaned fits into the overall process.
Rosenbloom's brief but enlightening look at the due diligence world post 9/11 is among the most compelling parts of the book. This section alone can be worth the price of the book. The possible effects of terrorism or war on a business, in concrete terms, or on the material adverse change or force majeure clauses of a contract are sobering and helpful.
Describing due diligence from seven points of view and then domestic and foreign aspects on top of that is a tall order. This informative book is a remarkable, and even entertaining accomplishment...Due Diligence for Global Deal Making: The Definitive Guide to Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions, Joint Ventures, Financings, and Strategic Alliances Overview

Career Renegade: How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love ReviewThere are three major benefits that you will gain from reading this book.
First it will serve as a motivation to all who want to give up the rut we all call a job and move out on their own.
The second benefit is really a step by step guide about how to move out on your own. Not only does Jonathan tell you how, he gives links to hundreds of resources to help you accomplish what you want.
The third valuable benefit is the wisdom that Jonathan shares from his own experiences.
The third benefit is perhaps the most valuable. Under the wisdom he shares, there are two very valuable lessons - either of them worth the price of the book.
The first lesson is how to deal with fear. Here Jonathan gives some extremely good advice. Fear is probably the number one reason most people do not achieve their dreams. His advice is to explore and quantify the fear. Ask what are the consequences of failure, what is the worst case scenario, and examine the results. Often this will put fear in perspective. Then let go of the fear. Do this only once and let go.
Then you need to explore and quantify inaction. What are the results of doing nothing? If "staying the course is going to create a miserable future", that should be an unacceptable alternative. Once you explore and quantify inaction, let go. Again do this only once. What you focus on expands. So only examine the fear and inaction once and then move on.
Then the important part is to stimulate success daily. Again, what we focus on expands. So stimulate success daily. You do this by being clear about what you want, believing you can achieve it and taking focused action.
The other huge lesson is how, when and why to involve others family/friends/mentors in your mission
The last lesson is probably the best advice in the entire book. There is no one person, guru, mentor who can give you the magic formula or set of directions that will work for you. In the final analysis, "no one can stand in your shoes. No one else can take action but you."
Take responsibility for your own life.
Ask yourself this question, "Will this career choice let me spend the greatest amount of time absorbed in the activities and relationships that make me come alive while earning the living I need to live?"
The book is well written and easy to read. If you really wish to change your life, to take charge and put your future in your own hands, this is a great place to start.

Startup: The Complete Handbook for Launching a Company for Less ReviewThis is truly a great book for any kind of entrepreneur - tech startup or coffee shop, just starting or already in business.
The book makes a big promise with, "The Complete Handbook for Launching a Company for Less," and "$100,000 in savings," but if you stick with the program, it works!
Obviously, it's impossible to create a comprehensive book of business best practices because every business has its own variables, but chapter by chapter, this book tackles everything you need to know - in order - for starting a business and growing it successfully.
She breaks down even the most complicated topics - like financing a business with loans or with investors - in plain English and gives step-by-step advice to maximize your upside and minimize the risk of starting a business. This book definitely explores "How to Finance a Startup" in a lot more detail than any other book I've come across. She has 14 sources beyond the normal VCs, angel investors, and SBA loans - and shows how to structure sweat equity with vendors and partners, etc.
I wish everything in life came with this kind of manual. This is the kind of reality-based textbook that university entrepreneurship programs should be using.
Every chapter begins with strategy, then breaks down tactics, then specific recommendations for templates, tools, software, and websites. You can tell that the author has actually used the tools because she even makes recommendations on how to get the most out of them - and how to get a deal.
Every chapter contains do-it-yourself guides - and that's where a lot of the savings comes in. The Branding, Marketing, PR, and Advertising chapters are so much fun! Brainstorming a brand and names for your business, templates for creating your own press releases - all very helpful.
Even for small business owners who have been in business for years, this book is a great quick reference guide for growing a business - tackling sales and revenue growth.
A great read!
