The Indie Author Guide: Self-Publishing Strategies Anyone Can Use Review
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is informative, well outlined, well written, and covers a topic close to my heart - self publishing. This book is divided into the following 12 chapters:
1. Indie authorship: An introduction
2. Publishing options
3. Getting organized
4. Creating your brand
5. DIY formatting for POD
6. Editing and revising
7. Designing your own book cover
8. Publishing through CreateSpace
9. Publishing for Kindle
10. Publishing for other eBook formats
11. Promotion
12. An HTML primer
At one point the author says that subsidy and vanity publishing don't offer any advantages over POD publishing these days. I'm not sure this is true. After reading Aaron Shepard's book entitled "Aiming at Amazon" (ISBN: 093849743X) last year I learned that small text does not print as well with POD. Nor do pictures in the book using POD technology. And if the book is going to be over 200 pages or so, then POD might get a little expensive as compared to traditional printing methods. But if you understand the ins and outs of POD publishing, then it is definitely the route to go in order to sell your writing on Amazon. A good, but slightly dated, book on POD is "Print-on-Demand Book Publishing" (ISBN: 0972380132).
Although I haven't read "The Frugal Book Promoter" (ISBN: 193299310X), it is my understanding that it goes into some depth about the importance of branding when promoting one's book. Chapter 4 in the instant book did a nice job explaining the importance of branding.
Although I haven't read "Perfect Pages" (ISBN: 0938497332), it is my understanding that it goes into some depth about how to create formatted Word documents for Print on Demand (POD). Chapter 5 in the instant book did a wonderful job explaining how to use Word to format your self published book copy for POD.
This afternoon at Barnes & Noble I read "The Frugal Editor" (ISBN: 0978515870) and found it to be a good book. But I liked the coverage of how to edit and revise (or get help in editing and revising) in Chapter 6 of the instant book. Well done!
Mr. Shepard in "Aiming at Amazon" explained how to go about designing your book's cover if you were going to use Lightning Source, Inc. as your POD printing service. In Chapter 7 of the instant book we are told how to design a cover if we are going to use Amazon's CreateSpace printing service. I think this coverage could have gone into a little more detail on how to use and customize graphic files. But it was certainly good coverage on the topic.
The material covered in chapters 8 and 9 I have not seen in print in other books yet. They were well done. And Chapter 10 was informative.
Chapter 11 covered promotion well. I liked it. Other books on the subject I like are: "Sell Your Book on Amazon" (ISBN: 1432701967), "Plug Your Book!" (ISBN: 0977240614), and "The Author's Guide to Building an Online Platform" (ISBN: 1884956823). But consider getting another book ["The Web Savvy Writer" (ISBN: 0977830403)] sold as an ebook by its author, and an audio book entitled "Secrets of Successful Blogging System" (ISBN: 0978806018) which is kind of pricey, but really good. If you get all these resources, read them, and study them, then you should have an excellent idea about how to go about marketing your tome or tomes.
Chapter 12 was OK. But I think I would have liked the book better if it had been left out. It kind of felt as though it was not within the scope of the book's subject matter. All in all, this book is a gem. I think it is good as a stand-alone guide, but it will really shine if used in conjunction with other books I have referenced in this review. 5 stars! The Indie Author Guide: Self-Publishing Strategies Anyone Can Use Overview

Publishize: How to Quickly and Affordably Self-Publish a Book That Promotes Your Expertise (The Logical Guides) ReviewSusan Daffron, the author of 11 books, nine that were self-published, provides a wealth of valuable information for anyone interested in writing and promoting a book.
She offers the reader her knowledge, experience, and expertise in an easy, conversational style. Daffron's title "Publishize" is a term she created to combine "Publish" and "Publicize." She notes (p.2) that in today's world, you can take advantage of the power of print publishing and online marketing, and improve awareness of who you are and what you do.
From the many good reasons to write a book, to advice on turning that book into an empire, Daffron covers all the bases. Some of the subjects she explores are:
The confusion surrounding print-on-demand
Ways to earn passive income
How to survive in any economic climate
Identifying your readers
The writing process
How to deal with procrastination
How to come up with a great title for your non-fiction book
Book production
Your book website
Online marketing and promotion
How to use publicity to buzz your book
These are just a few of the topics Daffron addresses. Her credentials are impressive: she's a successful business owner and president of Logical Expressions, Inc., a book and software publishing company. She's also co-creator of a writing and creativity program called IdeaWeaver, plus she also has a background in writing, editing, graphic design, and Web site development.
Her experience shows in this excellent reference book. It contains a glossary, book publishing resources, and a handy index. Plus she's a great motivator. I enjoyed this book immensely, and expect that it will become dog-eared from frequent use. A very impressive piece of work and a great guidebook for those ready to make the leap into self-publishing. Worth every penny. Enthusiastically recommended!

Self-Publishing For Dummies ReviewYou can probably tell from the books that I have written that I have had some experience with self-publishing. However, the difference is the second time around was possible thanks to experience from reading Rich's book, "Self-Publishing For Dummies". I followed A-Z what he covered in the book and applied the specifics of my audience and came out with an amazing product.
My first book, Under the Lontar Palm, I published with a company that ended up charging customers 17.00 for the book. I had no control over the pricing and knew nothing of the publishing industry. The sales and marketing experience was as limited as my knowledge at the time and eight years later, the same paperback is listed at the same high price.
My second and most recent endeavor found me writing about a subject that had a large but limited audience. It was a subject I knew well and there are no other references for the audience. I bought the self-publishing book, followed the plan and now am experiencing the pleasure of knowing what I'm doing and providing a great product for my customers.
The Self-publishing for Dummies teaches how to format the book block and the cover, suggests resources or vendors who can provide the technical services. The author also explains how to get ISBN's, copyright, library congress numbers and other technicalities of writing a book and forming your publishing company. Additionally, he gives great advice on how you can register your company (sole proprietor, LLC, or corporation based on size and mission) and how to budget.
I decided to start my own publishing company (Red Bike Publishing) and distribute using lightning source. This is the same distributor that my novel's publisher used. This time, I control the cost and there are definite benefits. However, this is what works for me. The good thing about Rich's book is that he helps the reader analyze the best publishing option for them.
The next vital part is the marketing. Excellent advice on how to market my niche book. From his advice, I developed my own network and am enjoying professional relationships, sales and great opportunities from doing what I enjoy.
Obviously I haven't quit my day job, but now I have the experience and know how to get my next book going and continue to market my current book. I was able to provide a professional product, start a publishing company and make sales.

Sell Your Book on Amazon: The Book Marketing COACH Reveals Top-Secret "How-to" Tips Guaranteed to Increase Sales for Print-on-Demand and Self-Publishing Writers ReviewThis book about Amazon marketing does not live up to its hype. It will waste your time and money. It is full of tactics that will teach you unethical practices, marginal techniques, and ways of spamming Amazon in violation of its guidelines. The book suggests you to do the following tactics, which are not helpful at all.
1. Don't write a 5 -star review of your own book. This is unethical and a violation of Amazon's guidelines. Customer reviews should be written by customers, not the authors who wrote the book. These reviews will be overlooked by potential buyers, who will not find the review helpful and ignore it.
2. Don't ask anybody for 5-star reviews. In his book, he tells the reader to give his book a 5-star review if they liked it. When I give a copy of my book to a reviewer, I don't say anything that may suggest I want a glowing review. Besides, 5-star reviews are usually generated by hype. Most browsers usually don't read the 5-star reviews or the 1-star reviews. The 2, 3, & 4-star reviews are usually read more.
3. Don't end every review with the title of your book. This could be seen as blatant self-promotion. Others may see is as a way of stealing sales. This is also a violation of Amazon's guidelines. It's also problematic because you may write more books. If you have 50 reviews that mention your older book, you would have to revise all fifty of them and mention your new one. There's an easier way to do this. Use your Amazon Signature. It can be changed at any time, and you can say something like "John Doe, `Author of Whatever Book." If you write a second book, you can change it to "Author of Whatever Book #2." Believe me, revising all of your reviews is very frustrating.
4. There is no "magical" way to remove a 1-star review. If the review is fair and balanced, it will stay. A review can be removed if:
-the reviewer clearly hasn't read the book
-is attacking the author
-and more!!!
5. The book suggests you to also write a bunch of Listmania lists and So You'd Like to Guides. I did all this for several weeks with no results. It was a waste of my time. Some people may even view this as a form of spam. I decided to delete most of my guides and lists.
The author suggests you to publish your book with a self-publishing company. There's nothing wrong with having your book published by a self-publishing company, but you can actually keep more of the profit by publishing it yourself. The book explains that there are two ways of having your book listed on Amazon: 1. Publish your book with a self-publishing company that can offer a 20% trade discount or 2. Publish your book yourself and sign up for Amazon Advantage, in which case you'd have to supply your own book to Amazon who'd also buy it at a 55% trade discount. But this begs the question, "If a self-publishing company can offer a %20 trade discount, why can't I?" This question led me to research the web to find the answer, and I ended up at "Aiming At Amazon." This book tells you how to do what the self-publishing companies charge you to do. You can save hudreds of dollars by taking the advice in "Aiming At Amazon." So it appears that "Sell Your Book On Amazon" is an advertisement (albeit a very subtle one) to self-publishing companies, and I also felt deceived that the author didn't include this piece of information.
One thing that really bothered me about this book is that the tips are *guaranteed* to increase sales. It's not a good idea to guarantee anything, especially on the internet. From my experience, nothing is guaranteed. I did everything this book recommended, and so far the results have left me very disappointed. In fact, I remember one month when my sales were much LOWER than they were the previous month. Not exactly something I expected from tactics that were *guaranteed* to increase sales.
Another important thing that this book doesn't address is that Amazon marketing only works if you write a GREAT book. Word of mouth spreads quickly online. So internet buzz will help a great book, but will damage a mediocre one. I finally accepted the fact that my first two attempts at publishing were failures. But I didn't like how this book filled me up with false hope, making me think that these tactics would increase sales. My third at attempt at publishing has much better results, but I'm using tactics from "Aiming At Amazon" and "Plug Your Book." I only made about $40 in the first month of my first book's publication, and I was using advice from "Sell Your Book On Amazon." By employing the advice in "Aiming At Amazon," I've already made $300 in just two months.
There are those who love this book. I, however, am not one of them. I suggest you to skip this book and seek out other books on internet publicity. This book will only disappoint and frustrate you. And since I did everything this book said, I've got a big mess on Amazon that I need to clean up.
