Space Time Play: Computer Games, Architecture and Urbanism: The Next Level ReviewSpace Time Play is a useful work for those new either to gaming or to how gaming is academically handled. Short, usually readable (though badly proofread), essays on architectural and political aspects of video games are interspersed with reviews of games relevant to the theme of the essay. These short pieces offer a good introduction to a gamut of games and much of gaming history. But I write this review not to praise the book, but to complain about it. It is one of the most poorly designed texts that I have ever encountered. Its glossy, reflective pages make reading the black, 10-point type print difficult. The gray, 8-point type print of authors' names and endnotes make reading impossible. The designer, perhaps in an attempt to look avant garde, has produced a volume that makes the usual pleasure of reading painful.Space Time Play: Computer Games, Architecture and Urbanism: The Next Level Overview

Management Theory and Practice ReviewI recently used the book in a structured class environment with my MBA students. The theory section of the book (Part One) was somewhat relevant to the class. Part Two (Management in Practice) was very relevant and the students engaged very well in the class as a result. I particularly appreciated how the subsections in each chapter is organized.
Very simple and straight forward to read. I think this edition is very good, and perhaps can use an upgrade especially in light of post 2009 development.

Cloud Computing Architected: Solution Design Handbook ReviewWhile Cloud Computing Explained focused on the what's and why's, Cloud Computing Architected focuses on the nuts and bolts of the how. I really enjoyed Cloud Computing Explained and was not disappointed in this follow-on volume. Cloud Computing Architected is a superbly researched and clearly written volume that succinctly examines each of the major open source and commercial products available to technical architects.
This tome is suitable both for advanced technologists and senior technology leadership, as it really provides a one-stop source for each of the major technologies available today, which is in itself a breathtaking achievement. The authors did a superb job of breaking each of the major areas into a well-organized outline with in-depth coverage of each significant project and product.
Some of my favorite sections include Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine, Windows Azure, Rackspace, Engine Yard, Facebook, Intuit, and Salesforce's Force.com. Other critical areas of coverage include an entire chapter on Authentication, covering such critical infrastructure as OAuth and OpenID, and other chapters on data structuring techniques such as sharding.
Two chapters are devoted to reliability and elasticity, as befits their importance in cloud architecture, and significant coverage is devoted to the CAP theorem as well. An excellent appendix explaining development of a case study cloud aookucatuib and an index round out the book.
All in all, a remarkably complete exploration with detailed implementation notes of the most critical cloud components and an excellent and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.Cloud Computing Architected: Solution Design Handbook Overview
