Fundraising When Money Is Tight: A Strategic and Practical Guide to Surviving Tough Times and Thriving in the Future (The Mal Warwick Fundraising Series) Review"Relevant" and "timely" fall short as terms to describe Mal Warwick's latest book. After going through a brief analysis of what history has taught us in terms of philanthropy in times of crisis and putting forward three scenarios for economic recovery, Mr. Warwick presents three possible fundraising strategies to take us through the period of economic recovery.
He then embarks on a detailed nine-step approach to what he calls "peace of mind":
* Step 1: Reassess the Whole Ball of Wax - to make sure your organization is around long enough to make a lasting impact, he proposes efficient management practices, something that is good even in times of abundance.
* Step 2: Strengthen your Case for Giving - donors don't care about you as much as they care about the issues you work on. Focus on those.
* Step 3: Be Content with One in the Hand -Forget the Two That May Be in the Bush - he questions the importance of creativity in tough times.
* Step 4: Cut Costs with a Scalpel, Not an Ax - he shares sixteen cost-cutting recommendations that impact the whole organization and fourteen more focused on cutting costs in print production. Here, I found his invitation to draw the line between major and small donors @ $1,000 very interesting.
* Step 5: Fish Where the Big Fish Are - this chapter deals with donor segmentation in as much detail as you need to "get" the idea and why it's important for you to do.
* Step 6: Stay Close to Your Donors - say thanks! And then, say thanks again!
* Step 7: Get Personal With Your Donors - collect and use data about your donors as a means to appeal directly to their cherised values and beliefs.
* Step 8: Step Up Your Efforts Online - lots of things you need to do to maximize your fundraising efforts by developing a comprehensive online strategy.
* Step 9: Break Down the Silos - a phenomenon that not only affects nonprofits but can hurt them badly, silos are discussed in this chapter.
In short, this book packs SO MUCH in so little space that, if you haven't taken pages of notes or if you have marked less than 10 pages to revisit again, I can guarantee you missed on lots of things: go back and read it cover to cover. You will thank me for it!Fundraising When Money Is Tight: A Strategic and Practical Guide to Surviving Tough Times and Thriving in the Future (The Mal Warwick Fundraising Series) Overview

Fundraising For Dummies ReviewIn case you've been trapped on a desert island for the past several years, IDG books has been publishing "Dummies"-themed books on every subject under the sun and moon, from Windows 2000 to sex. Fundraising for Dummies is a typically informative, easy-to-read, and useful guide to fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
With 28 chapters in five parts and appendices of checklists and how-tos, the book has loads of information for novice and intermediate fundraisers alike. In fact, it's also a pretty good reference for board members and volunteers involved in fundraising activities.
There is a chapter devoted to predictions on the future of philanthropy in the U.S., with one-paragraph explanations of brief statements, such as "E-giving Will Grow." Most of these predictions are obvious to nonprofit-sector experts (and especially those of us who participate on CharityChannel!). However, I must admit to being intrigued by the idea that "Nonprofits Will Rule!", meaning that, as more for-profits become regional and national in scope, local nonprofits will assume increasing local community leadership influence.
As good as this volume is in its general approaches and many helpful tips and techniques, do not mistake this book for a thorough treatment of the subject or any of its components. I was alarmed by its breezy assertion that nonprofit board service
"...is not as risky as serving on a for-profit board. Nonprofit board members are protected personally from liability in any legal action against their charitable organization..."
Haven't the authors heard of the IRS and Intermediate Sanctions? And, since nonprofit corporations are state-chartered (like their for-profit brethren), wouldn't liability vary from state to state, as well as depending on the facts and circumstances of each case? I would imagine that the D&O liability insurers would like to address this before the second printing!
One benefit of this book I found is one which I'm not sure is intentional. Grant writing is given short coverage in the appropriately-numbered Chapter 13 of the book, thereby providing two subtle reminders that grants are but a minor part of fundraising success.
Any reader interested in the subject will learn much from this book, as long as they don't take its accounting and legal advice too literally.

Social Media for Social Good: A How-to Guide for Nonprofits ReviewI follow Heather's blog and find her ideas very useful. This book seems to bring together most of her ideas in a very tight and well organized book. It is easy to find an idea and put it to use. Many of these ideas are in her blog, but this is so much easier for those who are beginners or advanced beginners with social media. I recommended it to several folks who won't go looking through blogs for answers, but who would find a book easy. So many ideas, I get inspired and start writing down my own adaptations and how I can make these ideas work. I love the "Nonprofit Examples of Excellence" so I can go to those sites and see for myself how they use the ideas.Social Media for Social Good: A How-to Guide for Nonprofits Overview

Nonprofit Internet Strategies: Best Practices for Marketing, Communications, and Fundraising Success ReviewThe book provides a great overview of fundraising, communications and marketing online. Each chapter is a separate essay by an expert in the field. Topics include ePhilanthropy Strategy, Multichannel Marketing, Integrating Online and Offline Databases, Building Online Communities, Reaching & Inspiring Donors Online, Advocacy, Staffing, and ePhilanthropy Regulation and the Law.
The field of ePhilanthropy is evolving and many organizations are seeking answers to implementing online programs. This book offers great perspectives on how nonprofits can take advantage of technology to increase their effectiveness.

The Networked Nonprofit: Connecting with Social Media to Drive Change ReviewAllison Fine and Beth Kanter have impressed me with their perspective and insight into the opportunities that evolving technologies represent for the nonprofit sector. I read Momentum in 2006, and have read Kanter's blog for years, so I was excited to read this book. I was disappointed to learn that it offered nothing that hasn't been portrayed in their earlier works, and found it to be a rudimentary introduction that had no compelling crux bringing everything together.
While the book might be useful for those who are looking for an introduction to the promise of social networks for nonprofits, I actually found Momentum to be better-organized and more compelling (and still relevant), and have found more useful info (though no better organized) in Beth's top-ten blog posts [...]. There seemed to be little original research behind this book, only interesting-but-anecdotal examples of successes and trends in the nonprofit sector, and no comprehensive explorations of results experienced across any range of organizations (time-savings, increased expenses, cost-shifts, increased membership, etc).
I don't think nonprofits will find this book useful as a guide for how to replicate the examples provided, though it will help open their eyes to the same new ways of thinking that are presented in Momentum and Beth's Blog. The Networked Nonprofit: Connecting with Social Media to Drive Change Overview

The Nonprofit Marketing Guide: High-Impact, Low-Cost Ways to Build Support for Your Good Cause (The Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Guidebook Series) ReviewKivi understands that marketing a nonprofit is a whole different animal. Anyone in charge of marketing/promotions for a nonprofit understands the budget constraints and organizational push-back that comes with the territory. Kivi writes this book with all those obstacles in mind. Not only does this book help people new to the concepts of marketing, but also to those who are familiar with them but now need to apply them to the nonprofit world.
The book is not only helpful to those who are in charge of external communications but anyone involved in representing the organization. This book would be a great addition to the library of any development team or nonprofit leader. The clear explanations and practical applications really made me feel confident in my new found responsibilities at work. I worried that the content of this book might be just a rehashing of nonprofit-marketing content from Kivi's blog or other sites but was very happy to find a wealth of new practical information organized in a very clear way.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking out ways to get new people interested in getting involved with your nonprofit. The Nonprofit Marketing Guide: High-Impact, Low-Cost Ways to Build Support for Your Good Cause (The Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Guidebook Series) Overview
